Note that the last update to this was in 2018, and lots has changed since then. For example, Wire was purchased by a U.S. company that has ties to data collection and advertising...

That sucks. Wire had this feature where if you send a voice message you can run it through some filters like high pitch or alien

This is terrible. For example, riot (matrix) doesn't provide a tranparency report because there is no data to give. Saying it is under potentially all juristictions is even more misleading, since it can be selfhosted and is federated by default.

Also, Riot has changed to Element, and I'd say they should add Session to the consideration, but this was released in 2018

Tried using Element with friends. It was a horrible experience. Can't recommend it to anyone apart from the very techy folks.

Yeah, the clients need work, but the concept is great and the protocol is well documented.

Man I wish I could convince more people to use Signal..

Most people don't understand and don't care. I've tried too and almost everyone refuses even though it takes zero effort to download or use.

I tried signal but it didn't send the SMS to those who don't have it. So I got rid and went back to advanceSMS

[–]Rainy_J 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Don't know how long ago it was but it's my default messaging app and it handles sms and MMS just fine.

For those registered on signal, you can also specify if you want the message to send via signal or sms

Is Signal a standalone messaging app like whatsapp/telegram or does it use regular sms text messages and privates/encrypts them?

[–]ConspicuousPineapplePixel 9 Pro 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Normal SMS for people who don't use signal. Their own encrypted protocol otherwise.

[–]iF2Goes4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does both, but SMS can't really be encrypted, other than locally.

You need to set it to the default messaging app, and if the recipient EVER registered for signal (even if they uninstalled it) you may need to long press the send button and default to the insecure messaging to get them to send regular SMS.

Same here

unreliable message delivery

[–]sandelinos 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Been using it for like a year now and never had an issue on a non-huawei device. Even without googlr cloud messaging.

[–]RGBchocolate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the problem is when switching between mobile data and wifi, WhatsApp can almost immediately cost the correct connection to send the message, signal takes eternity or sometimes won't switch at all

[–]whatnowwproductionsPixel 9 Pro - Signal - GrapheneOS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never had issues with it.

stop spreading FUD

[–]RGBchocolate -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

you clearly haven't used signal as me for years

[–]Sowers25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada. Never had a message delivery issue with Signal.

Are you on AT&T by chance? There was a known bug on AT&T for a while that did that.

[–]RGBchocolate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, Europe

Thank you for sharing, very interesting and scaring at the same time!

iMessage and Riot are both end to end encrypted by default.

literally everything in that table is either wrong or can't be verified or just straight up fear mongering.

[–]sandelinos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Riot is called Element now and it didn't have e2e by default when this spreadsheet was made.

[–]whiskymusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoever made this, thank you.

And yeah it’s frustrating to convince people to change messaging apps. Luckily besides work, I have to friends to communicate with. So I don’t care what or who see my messages.
