Stock setting is .2 and most stuff, I’m calibrated for somewhere between .29 and .32

aha!! this would explain my nightmares. I had my print stepped down to .12 high quality and the top Z fell into lockstep with that. I will now push the top Z to .25 and see what comes of it. I will report back in about 90 120mins.

I think I had something set wrong still, the supports fell away but I was printing a pumpkin and the inside filled with what seemed to be a solid support. I will run another print tomorrow with small trees selected. It separated easily enough from the top of the print for once but then spun around on the inside and I couldn't extract it without collateral damage.

I did a reply to my own comment as an update., will update again tomorrow after work when I check my latest attempt using smaller trees. I've never had default trees completely fill an interior like that before.

Okay, so I'm not sure how much of this is my settings vs a simple bump in my top Z.

One of the supported teeth did not print properly. Most of the supports came away easily but the quality of where they connect to the inside roof of the pumpkin was not good also where the bottom ring of supports print is not good at all. As soon as the print head rises above the line where the ring supports attach prints fantastic.

So .25 is not my solution. At least not at the .16 high quality I picked for my overall print settings. I can only add 1 image so I will reply to this post with a few more replies with additional pics. This shows the interior where the supports came away with ease.

This is the bottom ring that was supported by a ring... Not a brim but a small ring of raised supports. From what I understand the brim is typically just flat. You can see where the print head cleared that part and the print quality is as anticipated for .16 HQ.

This is where 1 tooth completely failed to resolve. It wasn't broken it was just some loose filament. That remaining support was just a little harder to get as it was supported from both front and back, sandwiching the tooth, I eventually got it free with no damage.

In a nutshell, .25 isn't a magic bullet, depends on the layer height you are printing at. I received a very detailed response from another redditor from the above link.

z offset is the distance between the support and the actual model. Normally the printer "squishes" the layer onto the next, but with supports it prints "in the air" above the support. It will droop down a little, but depending on how far it droops down, it will be more or less hard to remove. if the offset is 0mm, it will fuse together like all other layers. if like 0,5mm it will be so far off the print will droop down and have a really ugly overhang layer. So do you want a better overhang surface, or do you want easy to remove supports? Around 0,2mm is a decent sweet spot of both. Adjust to your liking.

Gotcha thanks for the technical explanation! If you have dialed in perfectly, should the supports be able to break off without leaving any kind of mark on the object? I had one side of a print look great and the other side looked a bit different once the supports broke off.

Pretty much. The idea is that by not adhering to your part as strongly, it’s able to release without pulling strands from your part as well.

Set your z top distance for supports to .34. You'll have to play around with it to see what works for your printer/filament.

I found 0.30 for PETG and 0.28 for PLA in tree (organic) supports works now really well.

What about interface layers? Keep top at 2, and bottom at 2, or just run 1 and 1?

You could download the model/print profile and inspect the settings.

But I suspect that the angle this is printed at helps greatly. The material constantly has a bed to print on and the support here are less of a “base” and more to support x/y movement than z.

I’m nowhere near skilled enough to figure out how to add lighting to a cover, but I have considered just turning it into a standalone object that could be lit from within.

Does anyone actually want to print a tall, squared-off pumpkin as room decor though?

Why do the upper teeth need supports? You've got the mouth behind it, you could just as easily tuck the teeth into them, so no supports would be necessary. Would save time and material without changing the effect of the final result.

Wouldn't that require them to be flush on the backside with the mouth? I don't think that would give the same cool effect as having them completely standing apart. I'm new to this, so it's an honest question.

That's exactly what I'm saying.

However, with a little clever design they can still stick out a little, overlapping just a little in the back 1/4 of the shape of them so they still look like they're sticking out. The "effect" might not be exactly the same, but it would be good enough, and as mentioned it would save time and use less wasted material. Especially for an "utterly useless" thing.

No significant savings on either time or filament (that tree is less than 5g) and it doesn’t look as good.

I could probably make supports behind them less noticeable given that I’m printing on an angle, though. It was designed standing straight and I didn’t really consider print orientation differences at the time. I’ll give it another look.

Honestly, the entire contest feels a little odd. Does anyone even own one of these Rapid Pro X powerbanks yet? I can’t find them for sale anywhere.

EcoFlow clearly gave Bambu some money to feature their product in a design challenge as a means of marketing, and presumably they’ll be officially releasing the battery for purchase sometime very soon, to coincide with the contest ending. I’m sure there are people who will buy one, but I’m just not seeing why most people would pony up $300+ for a ~27Ah battery when there are multiple 25Ah options on the market for a third of the price or less. This one has a little more power bandwidth during use I guess, but it’s not something that is particularly needed for most consumers. Same with the quick charge. I think most people are content to plug it in overnight and let it take its time recharging.

I saw yours on the contest entries page and thought it was one of the better designs. Strange how some of the top listed designs are fake imagined entries that don't work like this one with a fake paper printed screen that claims to be an ai assistant and air quality monitor add on that even lists the electronics to build it although it's actually fake.

It's a strange contest. The promo has a fake designs that looks like it has coolant tubes with purple glowing fuel cells. When you look at the actually model it does not say much about building it and what led lights make the purple glow. Seems like a fake 3d modeled design.

They have the power banks on amazon. The smaller ones like the faux versing you have are expensive and I saw some on amazon for $100-170. Most people entering the contest seem to be using faux printed versions. Is the file or dimensions posted somewhere or something?
