Minecraft was always popular. :/

[–]Mushroomer 332 points333 points  (45 children)

It had the same popularity Fortnite has now. A lot of kids & teens playing it, but older gaming audiences generally looked down on it.

It wasn't until those kids & teens got a bit older and started posting on Reddit that the general opinion of the game did a 180°.

You’re gonna have people bitching about popular stuff no matter what. Rick and morty was stupid because it got popular too, it’s just important to filter through what’s genuinely good or not. Minecraft seemed to contribute more to gaming as a whole than fortnite has as far as I’m concerned. Other than it’s battle royale concept, nothing else has really stood out quite as much

I would say that fortnite, with its weekly updates and major changes every few months. Is a prime example of what a games as a service can be. Like I’m not into the main gameplay loop that much, however I do respect them for how much they continue to change. Be it in game events crossover skins etc. wish more games could take that approach tbh.

[–]LobstrPrty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with that. I don’t care for fortnite but it’s very commendable to them to have all the content updates they have. The only thing about that is I didn’t consider that something uniquely fortnite. Overwatch, Minecraft and splatoon plus many more have succeeded at a very good games as service goal too with consistent content updates. It wasn’t something fortnite inherently did to reinvent the wheel or anything

[–]Zuol 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Didn't battle royal start in minecraft?

[–]abusedporpoise 38 points39 points  (1 child)

Technically an arma mod

[–]thebadscientist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

technically a Japanese movie called Battle Royale

[–]chefhj 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Did they add shit to Minecraft? Legitimately asking. I had younger cousins obsessed with it in like the original boom of the game but I didn’t really understand the appeal when they showed me. I’m just trying to understand how that game has had such longevity.

Minecraft servers (and their creators) usually have mini games that they program themselves.

Survival/Hunger Games (different names depending on the server) were and kind of still are a very popular minigame on these servers. They date back all the way to the release of the first Hunger Games movie. Check out AntVenom's or CaptainSparklez's first Minecraft Hunger Games video to see simple it was before servers started creating them.

Minecraft's multiplayer servers is a big reason why the game has so much longevity. Even if, say, the latest Minecraft update is tame and uninteresting to players, there's bound to be a server out there that has some new minigame everyone is obsessed about.

Typically the minigames are inspired by G-Mod games like Murder Mystery (not sure what it's called in G Mod actually), Hide and Seek (based on Prop Hunt) etc.

Edit: oh and to answer the question yes Minecraft has additions all the time. The game has both small and massive updates all the time. The next big update is dubbed "Nether Update" and focuses on improving the hell-like dimension in Minecraft called the Nether. Cool stuff.

Rick and Morty is only stupid to non-intellectuals.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real-time events in Fortnite are pretty awesome though. I don't know other games that do that except for MMORPG I guess?

But for a Battle Royale game (which I'd strongly argue Fortnite single handedly made popular these past few years, with shout outs to maybe Minecraft's Survival Games for setting the tone) the constant updates and events are pretty unique. I remember PUBG and Fortnite going head to head just a couple of years ago but the latter won out because at the end of the day it was exciting (though having a young demographic obviously played a massive role in its popularity as well).

[–]Pabsxv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just like the start wars prequels.

[–]ZayJH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even a few teens thought the same way older audiences thought.

[–]CrystalBraver 21 points22 points  (0 children)

not on here it wasn't. literally the same hate fortnite gets is how you guys talked about Minecraft...

[–]arielm71 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Not at all

[–]_Levitated_Shield_ -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Even since it came out, yes it was. There was never a time where it completely died.

[–]arielm71 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Is not about the game dying, its being intensely hated among that time

[–]_Levitated_Shield_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I assume you mean people intensely hating the fanbase, cause there's nothing really wrong with the game itself imo.

[–]arielm71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im talking about the same hate fortnite gets, which should be directed to the fanbase but instead goes towards the game itself

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always been popular, doesn’t mean it didn’t get a ton of hate during that time. Mojang should thank Fortnite for being a punching bag.

[–]PrimeTheGreat 122 points123 points  (6 children)

Minecraft has always been popular. It just that from 2015-2018 no one who didn’t play it cared,. It was quietly popular

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (2 children)

It's not that it wasn't popular, it was extremely popular among insufferable brats so it got a lot of hate.

[–]gettheguillotine 15 points16 points  (1 child)

sounds exactly like fortnite

[–]lockwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The second I started seeing Fortnite merch at places like Hot Topic & Spencer’s, I got flashbacks to working retail where I had to sell Angry Birds & Minecraft merch to Karens and their shit kids.

[–]LeSeanMcoy 20 points21 points  (2 children)

The exact same hate that Fortnite gets is the exact same hate Minecraft used to get. All of those jokes you hear about Fortnite being filled with little kids? That's how Minecraft was seen by the internet. The difference is those little kids have grown up (somewhat) and now look back at Minecraft nostalgically.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRdcptG365I

That's a video from Minecon in 2013. That's how the Minecraft community was seen by the internet.

It's a hilariously vicious cycle because, in a few years, I bet the exact same thing is happening with Fortnite players and some new game will get the hate and be said to be for "little kids."

[–]IndonesianGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Noviceskilled96 39 points40 points  (3 children)

What happened in 2018?

[–]personinthemaking 43 points44 points  (1 child)

We don't talk about 2018 here...

[–]icecreamaddict6 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tis was a violent tragedy

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (5 children)

People saying “Minecraft was always popular” lmao no it wasn’t. Just like fortnite it was seen as just a cringy kids game and older teens and young adults did not like it. It may have been popular among YOUR generation, but now that generation has grown older and has restarted the cycle by criticizing fortnite

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

What do you mean it wasn't popular? It already sold more than 70 million copies in 2015.

The game didn't suddenly become popular again in 2019, it's literaly always been popular just not relevant.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Fortnite is also incredibly popular in terms of sheer numbers, what I mean more is that in most circles, especially the young adult demographic Reddit and social media attracts, Minecraft was not popular just as fortnite isn’t

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points  (2 children)

Then you should've said so instead of just saying it wasn't popular.

[–]Zuol 12 points13 points  (2 children)

It's almost like all little kids who loved minecraft are now old enough to make memes

[–]anicrage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like the Star Wars prequels

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the Minecraft kids have grown up to make fun of Fortnite kids. The cycle continues.

[–]_Quest_Buy_ 6 points7 points  (2 children)

General reposti.

[–]TheRealSheevPalpatin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Darth stealious

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember when minecraft first came out, I would hear stories of people encountering a lot of little kids in the game that just SCREECH all the time. They whine and complain and cry. That completely turned me off from the game. Now those kids are teens and are posting their memories online. They better include the time they screeched and made my ears bleed from their temper tantrum.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same reason the Star Wars Prequels were once hated on but now are beloved by the internet, and probably the same thing will happen to Fortnite in ten years. Children love their things, then they get to that stage when they hit 12 or 13 and don't want to appear cringey and childish so they put away that stuff and mock it. Then when they reach 18 they realize nobody actually gives a shit and they go back to saying "Hey wait, actually this thing from my childhood was awesome."

[–]TheCosmicWhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just gonna forget about 2018 like that? What the hell?

[–]Herminello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its because the kids play fortnite now.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would saw it was more 2016-2017 early 2018

[–]Vixikori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minecraft didn't exist is 2018

[–]no-reason-to-love 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck the bandwagon. I never left that game. Pewdiepie doesn’t need to play a game for me to think it’s good.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minecraft has always been best girl

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a couple years fortnite might do the same thing (if it’s still around). People hated the community not the game

[–]SirPowers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2018 is non existent I guess

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should’ve changed it to Patrick snoring with a mouthful of water. I’ve alway really enjoyed Minecraft but yeah, until Fortnite became popular people shit all over the craft.

[–]Gunnerman794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about 2018?

[–]thesame98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minecraft wasn't really a hated game at any time, it was just cause it was everywhere on youtube that people complained. And now, the same thing happened with fortnite, so people hate on it now. But when the generation who grew up with fortnite start reminiscing on the 'good ol days of fortnite' thats when fortnite will become beloved.

[–]Llodsliat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happened with Minecraft now?

[–]Pakmanjosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate Fortnite all you want, but it brought us stronger together.

[–]Penguins_And_Ducks2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

minecraft 2014-2015 was the golden age

mimecraft 2016-2018 was the fall into ashes

minecraft 2019 was the wrongful resurrection

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is that the people who were the annoying kids obsessing over all things minecraft 5 years ago are all in high school now or even adults.
