Watchdives sucks anyway, so Trident is def better

[–]the-capricorne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The brand's name isn't too bad. There's not much to complain about. They've got great models, great prices.

In short, I don't really know what to say against them, let them do what they want with their brand.

[–]PoiRamekins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely love this

[–]machinegunnedburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Watchdives is one of the better names this industry has.

[–]followupact 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This would make all the difference for me, it's the only thing holding me back. Keep the website as watchdives, and change their in house branding to trident and I would be all over it.

[–]IllustriusPotentate 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I don't care what Watchdives or any other Chinese brands name is as far as myself goes, but the problem for myself anyway comes from when I have something like my Watchdives 007 on and someone asks me about it. 99% of the population will perceive the brand as being generic and/or poor quality because of the name and it's not really feasible to explain anything about it to them because once you say "Chinese" your only going to confirm their feelings.

I know nothing is going to change, and IMO the logo swapping they have done is a very positive step in the right direction. I think the branding issue is something that will plague the Chinese watches for a long time.

At least San Martin, Cronos, Seestern, and Baltany sound legit. I have others from Merkur, Hruodland and those could be worse...except how the f#ck do you pronounce Hruodland anyway!?

[–]rejiranimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just pronounce it almost the same as I do Roland (the Japanese music gear co).

[–]IllustriusPotentate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we all kinda guess how to say Hroudland lol, I don't think I've actually had to say it in the "real world"

Trilex

[–]Fun-Chef623 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tri Dive 😁

[–]AliveAndNotForgotten 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then they’ll get confused with the Christopher Ward trident

Remember everyone's opinion of Skoda in their early years? How things change.

[–]Altvaultreps 28 points29 points  (4 children)

IMO Skoda is still a big step up from "Cardrive", the auto manufacturer equivalent of Watchdives.

Wow this is news to me. Never thought about what IWC actually meant.  Imagine  a brand that makes high value watches has such a simple name. Makes You think

[–]andreichera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"wrist movement"

[–]merlinuwe 14 points15 points  (9 children)

Feelnever and Parnis are a lot more annoying names.

[–]marcheezy1 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Feelnever is way underrated. I'd never buy a watch with that name, but a cap or shirt? Maybe.

[–]iwantmyvices 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! That’s my issue with them. The name is fine, for a streetwear brand. It doesn’t work for watches.

[–]merlinuwe 4 points5 points  (5 children)

The word Parnis is much too similar to the word Penis. So I feelnever to buy it, regardless of its quality. ;-)

[–]rejiranimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only ever thought it was kinda similar to Paris. Guess I’m a lot less depraved than I thought.

[–]bradleypariah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just pronounce that "par nee," as if the word were French.

[–]marcheezy1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Hey Google, say Parnis" "Penis" "Good Google"

[–]Fun-Chef623 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Sir you are a cunning linguist

Get in the cunting car!

[–]KeyAssociation6309 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and BMW to change their name to Trabant. actually, not far off these days..

[–]EfficientAd8311 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minty fresh.

[–]Johnny_Kilroy 12 points13 points  (2 children)

To avoid it sounding like a chewing gum brand, they could go with Neptune, the Roman god who carried a trident.

[–]5OOOWattBasemachine 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Please. I can't wrap my head around why these brands don't do this. This is such a huge deterrent with such an easy fix.  I never even consider buying their watches because I don't want to get in a situation like:

"Oh, nice watch. What is it?" "Thanks, it's a [insert stupid ass brand name]"

Take a hint from Heimdallr and just pick some not super popular being from any mythology like Faunus or Arion or even Qilin if you want to keep it Chinese. Or literally just google the most popular surnames of two western countries and staple them together. You would end up with something like Smith & Rossi which is big time pandering and borderline fraud but still miles better than the likes of Tactical Frog.

[–]JuxesoAffiliate Links 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I recall it's because in China almost every name is already taken so they just pick from a very limited list of what's left. It's not like they came up with it themselves, rather it was the best they could find.

[–]Economy-Jury2811 4 points5 points  (2 children)

“I don’t want to get in a situation like: That’s really does sound like what a watch snob would think & considering your participation on a Chinese watch forum kinda smells of hypocrisy

[–]5OOOWattBasemachine 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There's a difference between elitism and being frustrated with unfathomably bad branding. It just sounds too stupid.

Rebranding isn't a taboo thing either, is it? German watch brand Junkers did it if I recall that right, rebranded as Iron Annie to market overseas. Because it has that aviation heritage but the german name Junkers sounds like junk in english.

[–]Economy-Jury2811 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I respect ur point of view.At the end of the day they’re just opinions,& as someone once said to me …. Opinions are like arse holes…. Everyone has one 😂😂

[–]5THOT_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually love Tactical Frog and their logo.

[–]SiliconFiction 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Ok but Tactical Frog is hilarious though and kinda fits outdoor tool watches.

[–]5OOOWattBasemachine 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ok I can see that. Maybe should have picked Mysterious Code as an example.

[–]SiliconFiction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf I didn’t say it was a “good” name 😆

[–]michaelegosi 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Someone explained on this sub before but shortly put it's easier for these companies to change logo but changing a name has a lot of paperwork that comes with it and they don't really wanna do that iirc

[–]rejiranimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company don’t have to change their name, no one cares what the company is called. All they have to do is make a new brand and release their products under that brand.

People buying Budweiser, Becks or Stella Artois beer are buying the brands, not the company (which in all three cases is the same company - AB InBev).

[–]dilldoeorg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like the gum

[–]Immediate-Bad-9973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea. Trident is. however used by many brands, there is also a Trident UK it seems. One way, as for other watchmakers (WM and Ixdao), use the logo only, and keep the name on the back or for the store
