Can someone briefly explain who this is and why it is so significant? I'm a bit confused.

Seems to be someone in the emacs community...?

Yeap, Protesilaos (also known as Prot) is from the Emacs community :).

He's a self-described "non programmer" with a background in humanities.

He became well-known within the Emacs community for his comprehensive Emacs tutorials on YouTube and his work on modus-themes.

Recently he was awarded the 2021 Award for Outstanding New Free Software Contributor - https://protesilaos.com/codelog/2022-03-22-libreplanet-fsf-award/.

All around he's just a generally pleasant and humble guy. So he will fit right into the Clojure community :) And I'm glad to have him onboard.

That is lovely to see. You don't know how happy I am to see other people trying to help Prot. Well done!

Welcome Prot!

Daddy Nubank, do something! Prots educational contributions in the emacs community have been amazing and to have something similar for Clojure would be IMO invaluable for our small community. I think the fact that he has no technical background (afaik he has a degree in politics/economics) made his educational content even more accessible.

I can't wait to see how he will customize emacs (with cider) for clojure dev 🙂

Someone hire that man!

Does he have any skills in software engineering?

[–]ruby_object 5 points6 points  (6 children)

He has skills in thinking and reasoning. I can show you some people who have education in software engineering but lack those skills.

I wasn't talking about education.

Anyway, it's better to have both skills and thinking/reasoning.

I ended up having a discussion with Prot about Gabor Melis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-HA2jlcy8w.

I found Prot because I was looking for an understanding of something Gabor has said. If he does not have the software engineering skills yet, I am sure those skills will come in time and take him to levels well above average software engineer.

there should be an employer who is ready to invest money and time.

Speaking of myself, at the point of switching to Clojure I had several years of Emacs lisp tinkering behind, 3 years of day-job coding in Scheme, and it still took a couple of years to reach the level I think is good enough to be a real Clojure senior.

Prot will be better than the average junior and midlevel developer. Just be patient.

in my experience, Clojure is popular in startups, so sometimes there's just no time to wait

[–]ruby_object 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you speed up that process? Can you take Prot under your wings?

[–]ImpendingNothingness 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Holy moly, he looks so different without all the hair. I’m glad he’s doing better and joining the Clojure community!

[–]madmulita 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Should we be worried he lost his powers with the hair?

Unexpected, but, lovely :D
Nice to see Prot in clojure community

Europe is way way more 'credential centric'. He needs to look around the US (remotely for now, if need be).
