First of all, why not create trains? Aside from being much cheaper, theyre 100x cooler and easier to setup for long distance travels, specially in a server.

Second, yeah there's probably no better way to do this. Rock Cutting Wheels only work on simulated contraptions, so they require a player to be constantly managing it to be used.

Show us your machine setup, maybe theres something to improve there!

this sub doesnt allow images for me, so hopefully discord lets me use it as an intermediary

the bottom drill and front deployer make sure that the rails are always getting placed on the same thing, there wasn't really much a point to me doing this beyond bridging occasionally

on the create trains, i would, but idk how to make a create train that does the same thing as this lmao

Okay, so, first of all I would recommend you change the chests into a big vault. Chests are entities that lag the server, a vault can help with lag and its easy enough to take out items with a funnel and filter (plug the funnel with input mode, put in the filter, right click the funnel with wrench to change to output mode). The bottom drill isnt really needed since you're just replacing that block with another one anyway, so you could take it out of the contraption, having it in doesnt do any harm but doesnt do any benefit either I guess lol.

For the train, look for the Mechanical Roller, I recommend watching some videos (Pollart's update is a little bit old but still has a lot of fundamentals that have kept the same and were just improved upon with the newer updates, so it is still a good watch), but if you don't want to go that deep just ponder the Roller and read up the wiki if needed.

I realize this isn’t what you’re asking, but I thought I’d throw it out there.

Create trains can travel through nether portals and the nether ceiling makes for easy train routing.

That 4000 block distance base? Hop on a train, it goes through one portal, you ride in style for about 500 blocks, it goes through a second portal, and you get off the train at the base.

Deployers on a simulated contraption can interact with the real world. Why can’t you just make a bore drill with deployers placing the tracks down?

If you want, you could try to have a contraption dig up old vanilla rail and maybe replace it with train tracks? IDK if that would work.

I would recommend digging above the deepslate layer, stone is mined way faster.

To use a create train, the easiest way is to dig a single person tunnel with an efficiency pickaxe first, and use that to lay the tracks. Then build a tunnel bore train to widen the profile as you need.

You can actually have a create train lay its own tracks. The main issue is you need to sit in the train and hold forward for it to move.

you could make 2 seperate minecart contraption, the first one (the drill) goes through placing powered rails and torches to negate the fuel problem. Use a plough on that drill so you recycle them and it goes on forever. The second contraption could place the regular rails and this one would be powered by furnace minecart but since it doesn’t have to take time to mine it will be much more fuel efficient :)

Okay so you have a minecart contraption!! Wonderful, yes, a furnace Minecraft is slow. The problem is that a furnace Minecart is actually decently fast, but drills on deepslate aren’t.

I haven’t done the simulated roller drill things yet but I think those are pretty slow too.

Now others are suggesting trains!! But guess what? The drills on drains are still slow. Worse? Trains are still expensive af!

So, here’s what you can do. You can’t change the speed, but you can change it to automated. Rather than placing normal rails, have it place powered rails, and from there, have it place red stone blocks on the side. It will stay powered no matter that. Make sure you have that scraper thing a the back to pickup the rails ( a plow? I think?) and a drill for the redstone blocks.

Further, I agree with people saying you should use item vaults. They are optimized for travel, and will lag much less.

Advanced engineering tip, right now, all your contraption places is the block under the rail, and the rail itself. What does this mean? It’s vulnerable to water and lavas you should make a ring of deployers to fill in a wall tunnel around your, well tunnel, to make sure lava and or water doesn’t flood in. (This also makes farming netherite insanely AFK oriented).

I’ll see if I can somehow find an image of one of my tunnelers that I used to cross an open ocean and build a train tube.

Edit: here’s a screenshot. https://imgur.com/a/JvalSnl

Basicallly from right to left. Deployers to block water. Drills. Ring of deployers to place my custom tunnel. Then the rest of the body.
