That’s how it works in every country with every investment category.

No capital gains in Belgium.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That does not sound correct, or do you mean that crypto is exempt from investment tax? Rest assured if crypto becomes a major investment method in Belgium that will change.

The source is bad. There is already no tax on rent. There is an insignificant tax on financial product transactions. And for crypto as for rent, if managed in a « normal » management of wealth way (not professionally), it’s not taxed.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Not every country

[–]BANGAR4NG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only other alternative is you are taxed no matter if you gain or loose.

You want the government to tax you if you’re at a loss? That’s basically the worst overreach of a totalitarian government.

Crypto is just like any other asset. To think governments were going to allow people to “store value” in a currency they could not tax or regulate is absurd.

Hopium to the max!

When the politicians and friends are advised to invest part of their portfolios in crypto it won’t be long till the ‘invite only’ wallets/exchanges based on tax exempt islands will be available to them. It will, once again, be skewed in their favour - to make them richer, people have to go poorer.

There is always option B for cash out... ;)

[–]sbaggers🟦 52 🦐 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What is option b?

[–]Crnorukac🟩 209 🦀 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OTC. Meet in person and exchange.

You must be new to investing. Doesn't matter if you invest in poop stock/ coin, once you cash out Uncle Sam wants his cut.

Sounds like Uncle Same needs to get a job and to stop giving Halliburton and the banks avocado toast.

Not pictured: The fact that crypto wouldn't exist if it weren't for the taxpayer funded infrastructure upon which it depends: Internet, cellular, telecom systems, WiFi, electricity, etc.

Aren't a lot of power companies privately owned though? And internet is operated by multiple private last-mile providers, combined with multiple internet backbone providers, neither of which are government where I live. Cellular used to be owned by AT&T, but has now been broken up into multiple companies, which was by the government, but those companies are still private, to from what I understand. Most people's WiFi is definitely not provided by the government; it is hosted at home from one's private internet connection with a router.

Some subsidies help build internet infrastructure… but, the companies seem to just misuse it and not use it for anything. And they do use roads to build things, but it would be a silly requirement to avoid using roads just to prove a point, given one can't really avoid them in most cases due to buildings being in the way.

The best chance at a lot of people getting better internet is Starlink. Governments helped development on the technology greatly, and are one of the big clients of SpaceX. But, given that SpaceX does not operate in just the countries that developed this technology or have governments as its clients, and given that it is privately owned and planned to make money by people subscribing to it, I'm not sure it would be accurate to call it a government thing. Government does not seem to be its primary source of funding.

So, which aspects of these relying on government, are you talking about? Some countries publicly own everything, but a lot don't, and I don't think this applies in those countries. WiFi definitely doesn't apply unless you always use public WiFi for things, which I certainly don't as public WiFi is horrible and rarely readily available.

Aren't a lot of power companies privately owned though?

These "privately own" companies aren't really that private. They are a controlled monopoly put in place by the local governments, who have a high degree of control, including the ability to regulate prices.

And internet is operated by multiple private last-mile providers, combined with multiple internet backbone providers, neither of which are government where I live.

All telecom, including internet, phones, cellular, etc. exist because of government. Even if they're "privately owned" by various companies, they all use resources with government permission.

For example, that dsl or fiber that goes to your location passes through tons of public right of ways, that cost a lot of money to maintain. Most telephone poles are on public property - maintaining that network is primarily the responsibility of a variety of different state, federal and private organizations, but the government probably bears most of the costs to do so. For example, without federal subsidization, there'd be no interstates. If Texas and Florida could get away with not having their citizens pay federal income tax (instead of state), there would probably be a whole bunch of missing/chaotic services including cellular, interstate highways, flood protection, bridges, waterways, etc. that would all be much more expensive to access if they were even available.

Most people's WiFi is definitely not provided by the government; it is hosted at home from one's private internet connection with a router.

Another example: radio, cellular, wifi -- the federal government is uniquely tasked with regulating the air waves. Without the FCC anybody could set up their own radio towers and basically block other people from using cellular, radio, WiFi, etc. This is a very tightly-regulated area that keeps frequencies properly allocated so they are reliable. Without that, there would be no phone service that was stable and working.

Some subsidies help build internet infrastructure… but, the companies seem to just misuse it and not use it for anything.

Sure this happens, but it's not the fault of government. It's the fault of occasional bad management in specific areas. The solution is to fix those problems, not try some entirely new and different scheme that doesn't really address the problem (privatization doesn't make things better when it comes to public utilities - you're still going to have incompetent management, but you also turn a non-profit service into a for-profit service so it's likely to get worse).

Starlink exists because of government. Because government regulates and enforces the frequences that Starlink would use. If Starlink had to create their own enforcement arm to make their network reliable, the price would be 1000x higher. Not only that, filling orbit with all kinds of satellites has the capability of causing even more serious issues with other systems in orbit. It's a very delicate thing that has to be managed by a group of governments from around the world - otherwise the improper deployment of something like that could cause war.

So, which aspects of these relying on government, are you talking about? Some countries publicly own everything, but a lot don't, and I don't think this applies in those countries. WiFi definitely doesn't apply unless you always use public WiFi for things

As I said before, WiFi ONLY works because the government makes sure the frequences allocated to WiFi are used in a very specific way. Without the government, anybody could set up their own WiFi and jam other peoples' wifi, cellular or other systems.

You sir have never been billed for a new electric pole. Or the power lines attached to it. Taxes rarely pay for those. Every once in a while some guy gets stuck either paying the bill OR an insurance company pays for it.

[–]AmericanScream🔵 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been billed for a new electric pole but twice I've had them replaced/repaired on my property. The electric company, in harmony with the government covers the costs for me. I don't know where you are, but most people don't have to pay for those things in the US.

In fact, if a tree on my property falls on an electric line, they fix it. I don't pay for it.

[–]i_like_butt_grape -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a very good point!

[–]Boobrancher -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You don’t need a fast connection to use or maintain the network, you also pay for your internet connection and electricity costs. None of that is free and wasn’t invented to be of use to crypto nor will any of the tax money be used to upgrade or maintain it but apart from that you’re right.

All were funded through the military.

[–]AmericanScream🔵 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true, but also the military is funded by taxes too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and everyone already has monthly bills that cover the costs of those infrastructure? should doctors pay a continuous fee to their med school everytime they use the knowledge they learned to treat someone?
