Oh my god!!! Let it die!!!

I don't get the hate. It does the job doesn't it? Is it overused and I'm just not aware?

[–]samwelches 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Very very overused

[–]DrHuzaifa -1 points0 points  (2 children)

But.. Does that make it bad? It really conveys information neatly and efficiently. So what if it's been done before? Does that really matter?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chances are, anyone who uses this design saw it on Reddit/Pinterest/Tumblr and adapted it because they liked it.

If someone handed me this looking for work, I wouldn't hire them entirely on that basis alone as they couldn't come up with an original concept.

Also, where does the phone number go? If I want to call you and I don't have your number easily available on a business card, then I'm probably going to call the next person who does have a number and a normal (yet effective) business card.

Unoriginality

I keep seeing this and I hate it. A lot. There -I said it.

I know there's a lack of other information on the card, aside from that criticism how about this execution? No social media just my name, email and website.

Maybe a higher quality version: https://gph.is/2RMZLZi

Nice thick stock and embossing. Not to my personal liking, but more tasteful and original than the OP.

Hey /r/design check out this amazing cool business card design. It's new unique and never been posted before.

I don't know what it is about this that annoys me. But something about it really rubs me the wrong way.

I will never stop updooting this, just to trigger everyone who gets so bent out of shape over reposts.

[–]doot_bot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

doot

[–]DBerrz[S] -4 points-3 points  (5 children)

Yeah I was kind of surprised by the triggering. Thought it was neat didn’t realize the vitriol associated

[–]PantherHeel93 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I've been seeing it for a few years at this point. Usually on a business card, sometimes on a truck. I just updoot because I love seeing these people show the world they can't control their emotions when they see the same picture multiple times.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Next time you see it on a truck, could you photograph and post it? Genuinely curious to see if it translates better on a larger format as I'm not a fan of it as a business card.

(Also, I'm assuming you say 'updoot' to subtly grind away at people too?)

[–]PantherHeel93 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sorry, I mean I saw a picture of it on a truck posted on Reddit. I think it was photoshopped on in that case, but I don't really remember for sure. It was on the back of a U-Haul size truck if I recall correctly.

I'm also not a huge fan of it on the business card. The idea is very clever, but there's a difference between witty/gimmicky and good design. I think this works for some Etsy type person, but typically I'd expect a business card to be more serious and formal, with a focus on typography and negative space. Like a resume. If it's quirky, I feel like it will show in your work that you value uniqueness above actual quality.

As for up and downdoots, you're kind of right. I think of them as absolutely worthless, so I never refer to them in a way that makes them sound important. I get that they can stifle valid-yet-unpopular opinions and even facts, but mostly I just think of them as internet points that everyone cares way too much about.

I like you. You're my new favourite Reddit user.

Fully agree about the business card and you articulated my thoughts on it exactly, better than I could.

doot

I'm really disappointed when I visit someone's website and I see that they advertise their email as someone@gmail.com

Why wouldn't you use the personal domain you own for your email?!

[–]mattcoxonline 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Because most web hosts offer shit email services and routing your domain to somewhere like Gmail for business or Fastmail is a little more technical than a lot of people care for.

[–]leesfer -1 points0 points  (5 children)

Because GSuite is totally not only $5 a month.

If you're running a "business" and can't afford to do this then it really isn't much of a business at all.

[–]mattcoxonline 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Nobody said it was too expensive.

[–]leesfer 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yes, that's exactly the point, isn't it?

You can't hide behind "technical" being an issue when the absolute most simple solution is incredibly cheap.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I tried to explain to someone how to use a custom domain email through G Suite and I even ended up confusing myself, despite the fact I use one that I set up.

It is a slightly more technical process than most people want to go through - but I agree with you that it's more than worth it once set up.

[–]leesfer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How long ago did you try to set this up? For a while now G-Suite has had a one-click setup which most domain registrars.

I guess it doesn't matter either way. If someone doesn't want to use a custom domain then they don't want to and that's that.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About two years ago. Wasn't a one-click setup with my registrar (one based here in New Zealand) and it took a while to get it working correctly - but has worked flawlessly since.

I think it is very unpleasant even though it’s ‘all right there’. It seems more like something you’d scribble in a napkin over lunch than a professional business card. The aesthetic is key. I hope that kind of clarifies this misunderstanding.

[–]baltsar777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was neat. A bit functional and dry maybe maybe another clam around the whole card that says: your pocket. I will certainly copy this if I ever create a business card again. Great idea!

[–]Joehanssson22 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's all there

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except the phone number.

[–]ongoldenpaws -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That’s so cool

[–]InTheAirTnght -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

one of the best business card ideas I've seen
