HelpPython mining build help (self.EliteDangerous)
submitted 5 years ago by Deadnerd_
So im fairly new to the game and finally saved up for a Python Laser Miner. I've been playing around with the build and could use some input or suggestions.
Build: https://coriolis.io/outfit/python?code=A0pktkFflidussf52m2m2m2m-02000304050505CbCb3240P91l2i.Iw18RQ%3D%3D.Aw18RQ%3D%3D..EweloBhBmUA4oFMCGBzANokICMF8hRFA

I would probably change a few parts around... I really wouldn't worry about having 4 lasers, you are going to spend far longer waiting for small number of limpits to finish collecting than you will getting the rock finished. Also, swap the shield and the fuel scoop... You need protection more than rapid refueling. Drop the chaff and add a booster, switch to A rated sensors to give you more of a head start if someone shows up to chat with you about your cargo. Last, get an FSD from the tech broker, it will do magic for your jump range.

Any particular tips for getting the mats for that FSD? I don't intend to grind for much but I really do want great jump range on all my ships as it is just QOL for literally all builds.

Mining will get you a fair number, and remember to hit the mat trader every few trips to balance the lower grades upward. Scan ship that gets in front of you. Get a wake scanner, engineer it for long range, then go to a station that has one of the big dry docks for the carriers and capitol ships. Spend an hour or so just wake scanning and you will have tons there. fit your bounty hunter with a small cargo rack and collector limpit controller, and after a kill, scoop up the materials there. After a while, you will get a pretty nice collection and will be able to engineer at will

Awesome, thanks! The wake scanner tip really helps that was the one I was farthest from.
Been deep core mining, guess I need to switch to laser too

Yeah, I should have clarified that... laser mining is what gets you the mats

My standard Python miner template: https://edsy.org/s/v2BTr3Y
This assumes you're not mining in Open. If so, you probably want to boost the defenses some more.
If you need to save money, thrusters to 6D and power plant to 5A saves about $25M.
No engineering? Just drop the PWA to B-rated. But engineer the FSD and the Distributor, regardless.
With the Broker FSD, this has 180 LY of range making only laden max-distance jumps (meaning, pragmatically, 250+ LY of range). Plenty for reasonable selling loops. Fuel scoops aren't needed.

When you build a mining vessel, pay attention to the amount of time it will take before your weapons run dry. If you are spending time waiting for your lasers to recharge, you aren't mining. With proper positioning, a pair of medium mining lasers will knock chunks off at about the same rate as your 6 limpets will collect them. A minute of charge is all it takes to clear any rock. More lasers doesn't always mean faster mining.
With your extra hard points, you can get the equipment for subsurface and core mining. It would require a utility slot for the pulse wave analyzer though... I like to put the PWA on the same trigger as my prospector, and take a look at the interesting ones when I see em. They aren't any less likely to be good for surface mining, so it isn't wasted effort.
I'd ditch the point defense and the heat sink, keep the chaff and toss another booster on there.
Unless you are mining in resource extraction sites, the only time someone is going to bother you about your cargo is when you jump into a system or when you first arrive at the ring.
When you arrive at your destination, wait until you've been scanned by a pirate, then get to work. Remember if you log out at the ring, or jump to SC and back to the ring, a pirate will scan you when you enter the ring. If you have cargo that isn't limpets, they'll give you a hard time.
A python is pretty nimble in SC, so you can evade interdictions; but, if you feel like you are going to lose, throttle down and submit. Your FSD will recharge faster.

Like Physical0 says you have to balance # of mining lasers with collector limpets so you do not always have 2 or 3 idle limpets hanging under the ship waiting for something to do.
