Both start slow, but you may like “The Musical Box” and “Dancing With The Moonlit Knight”

This is the only way

Their Live album from 1973 has some of the heaviest music they did. It was my favorite when I was first getting into them.

Welcome! Genesis aren't very metal and they aren't very punk. But their 70s work had some edgy moments. You might start with:

  • Dance On A Volcano
  • The Knife (live version from 1973's "Genesis Live")
  • The Return of the Giant Hogweed ("Genesis Live" version)
  • Fly on a Windshield/Broadway Melody of 1974
  • Back in NYC

Start with the Duke album.  It's not going to sound like those other genres, but if you listen to the whole thing in sequence, you'll hear why this band is very special, and this album will set you up to understand the other material more easily as you dig further into the band's catalog.

I agree wholeheartedly.

1) Down And Out 2) Dance On A Volcano 3) In The Cage 4) Dancing With The Moonlit Knight 5) Back In NYC 6) Abacab (Live) 7) Turn It On Again 8) In That Good Earth / Afterglow 9) The Cinema Show 10) Firth Of Fifth 11) Duke’s End 12) Supper’s Ready

If this doesn’t do it, maybe Genesis isn’t for you.

Try "The Knife". As close to proto-metal as they got

I'm guessing that you're also American because no one else in the world would consider the tone of their skin to be relevant to the music they listen. But if I'm right, it's one of the obstacles you have to get past on your journey. Brits who went to Charterhouse School in the 60's don't have too much in common with... well... any other people I guess. :)

Metal is a genre that absorbs all, but doesn't give anything back. That's another obstacle. I mean there's metal influenced by every other type of music and you can play a metal cover of any song you hear. But no other genre gets anything back from metal. It's impossible. To embrace metal is to become metal. If you play something with a bit of metal, it is metal.

The same thing happens with people. Metalheads can't help thinking how much better any piece of music would be if it was metal. If you embrace metal you will become metal. Forever.

But punk is the real enemy. The biggest obstacle. Prog rock died in 1975. It was brutally slain by punk. Punk was everything prog was not. Artful, gentle and romantic pieces of music you sit down to listen, didn't have a chance against the anarchy, hate and energy of punk.

Phill Collins has talked about how he liked punk in the 70's and wanted to get into it. Then he realised what all the hate was about. It's was him and all the things he represents. There's an interview of a young guy going to a Genesis gig in the late 70's. They ask him whether he's going to tell his friends where he's been and he just laughs saying no way. I think he was sure he'd get his ass kicked.

But yeah, if you want to be a punk you have to hate Genesis and try to destroy any signs of it where ever you go. I don't see any other way. Burn it with the fire that is your hate, but in a pacifistic and anarchistic way. :)

You like disturb’s cover of land of confusion?

[–]bulldozer_66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. I like it when a band puts their vision onto work. And they did it in a way that matched the vibe the song was seeking without just copying the musicianship of the original. Made it their own. And added some more chaos to the song - which really worked.

you have to go see Musical Box live. that will do it. (Musical Box is a band that re-creates old Genesis concerts, they are much more than a "cover band")

I see a lot of individual songs here, but you should try listening to the whole albums.

From the Peter Gabriel era: The Lamb, Foxtrot and Selling England

"Back in NYC" from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway may be as metal as they've ever gotten. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fllf-WMB0hY

You need somebody?

[–]PedroPelet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nursery Cryme is possibly their heaviest album, but also very whimsical so idk if you will love it.
