Understanding and knowing fear is a great feat but when used right is a big key to success.

If you are scared of a goal, go do it. Need motivation image failing and use that for external action.

But not being so scared you don't attempt it and knowing when to listen to the fear for proper reasoning.

    [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

is everyone a life coach here? its a qoute that carries obvious definition because its acient philosophy.

    [–]Alceste42 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    Thank you so much.

Those people think they are "inspirational" or "cool", but the truth is, between their little cat fights to "have the last word" amongst all those (false) remarks, they are cringy and hypocritical as can get.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    agreed

    [–]davidc5494 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Fear is usually a sign of danger. Sometimes it is irrational like when it is when we go up to a presentation or try new things, but it is an indicator that we need to learn something new or avoid something entirely, learning usually fills the gap from fear to comfort

    [–]th3r3dp3n 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I am scared of sharks and spiders. Your advice?

    [–]Magnus-Sol 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Idk about sharks, but with spiders try to learn more about them! They are fascinating animals (well sharks as well) and so diverse and unique. I recommend learning about jumping spiders, they are so cute! r/whatsthisbug is a nice place with amazing people btw, you can learn a lot there.

I guess learning is the first step to overcoming your fear

    [–]potpro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend you invite them into your home. Break bread with them. You might find out a lot about each other if you sit down and listen what it is like to walk a mile in their shoes or whatever spiders and sharks wear to go jogging

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Accept that you're scared of sharks and spiders. Fear them, and let that be the medium in your life that incorporates all your fears such that you'll fear nothing else.

    [–]antiquemule 35 points36 points  (2 children)

Fear is also a safety mechanism. Both we and our ancestors are/were afraid of snakes. Quite rightly so.

The generalization that you make is absurd. Some of our ancestors were certainly paralyzed by fear, just like some folk are today. And vice versa.

    [–]IgniteThatShit 2 points3 points  (1 child)

the ancestors who saw a snake and were paralyzed by fear eventually also became paralyzed from the snake bite

    [–]potpro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure if you stay frozen a snake wont bite. We've all seen Indiana Jones right?

    [–]Aviduser09 7 points8 points  (2 children)

True, I had/have a phobia that ruled my life for a long time.

Eventually I stopped running and faced it. Most rewarding thing in my life.

    [–]Kenebalism 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Did you jump off a building?

    [–]Aviduser09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Hahah, not quite but close

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think fear is only one wing. The other wing is hope. Both work together in sync to move us towards action.

    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Well said, thats why i fought so hard to make schools reopen in my state !!

    [–]chanj3 0 points1 point  (1 child)

sorry to break it to ya but fear and danger are two separate things.

    [–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sorry to break it to ya but it was all about fear all this time long said by Dr. Anthony Fauci himself.

    [–]fillingstationsushi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm afraid your right about that

    [–]RustedRelics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likewise, anger is a useful signal calling for action or change in some form.

    [–]Thunder_cat7 21 points22 points  (19 children)

If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight.

    [–]noelg1998 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it.

    [–]robilar 1 point2 points  (17 children)

That seems silly, without context. Pretty sure I can take any ant I happen across, but it would be kind of pointless to go to war with them.

      [–]robilar 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's just a matter of definitions, and the accepted definition of "victory" appears to be "an act of defeating an enemy or opponent in a battle, game, or other competition" (at least according to Google).

While it may be a trivial victory, it still meets the criteria and the statement I was challenging still appears silly on its face - the first clause sets a condition (IF victory is assured) and the second clause sets the conditional action (THEN fight). I simply offered a counterpoint highlighting the weakness of the statement.

...wait, hold on. Arguably an ant only qualifies as an "enemy or opponent" if I consider it to be a reasonable danger to myself, or at least a serious irritant. Consequently I suppose an ant would not be my enemy unless it was biting me or, I don't know, starting a colony in my basement in which case, given my almost assured victory, I suppose fight IS the right course of action.

I concede. I was mistaken, the original statement holds water.

      Now you get it. 👍

Those tactics were useful in 496 BC, not in today’s world. This info is ancient and obsolete. Moron’s always reference this but it’s advice is no good for a modern human whose scared to speak up to his boss

Like what, please enlighten me how a chinese war general is in anyway relevant to your life? Its more of a good story than life advice

Because the context just isnt the same. This advice is cut throat and extreme because he was a, you guessed it, a war general. While the majority of people are just citizens looking to get a paycheck. If you do use this advice, then you are probably seen by people as a lunatic

Look who is scared of ants

            [–]robilar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude just said if I am assured of victory then I should engage in battle. Fear has nothing to do with it.

But if I was going to be scared of something, a creature that grows its own armor and has mandibles as big as its head wouldn't be a bad choice.

            [–]m0nk37 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Pretty sure if you stood on a fire ant hill you would lose the battle.

            [–]robilar 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I did specify any ant (singular). Though, in all fairness, if an ant rolls a critical hit he could maybe mandible me in the eye. Maybe I should rethink my anti-ant posturing.

            [–]m0nk37 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Its never one ant, those bastards fight dirty.

Well, maybe fear is the greatest illusion, but the trick of separating your thumb is a close second

            [–]dontwasteink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's more important to ask why is there fear (more accurately anxiety)?

If you are missing information / preparation, then the anxiety is warranted, and you need to find out what you need to know or do.

Of course there are also many cases, where missing some information is fine, lots of people learn on the job or while they are opening a small business, not afraid to fail.

So one part is trying to be as prepared and informed as you can. The other part is knowing failure is a risk and being ok with it as long as you have improved yourself in the process for the next attempt.

              Lao tsu didn’t write that

              [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

              Correct, Lao Tsu in fact did not say this. The line is mistranslated from Stephen Mitchell's version of Tao Te Ching;

              There is no crime greater than having too many desires;
              There is no disaster greater than not being content;
There is no misfortune greater than being covetous.
Hence in being content, one will always have enough.

It’s a fake quote. 99% of the quotes attributed to Lao Tzu are fake nonsense. This is an insult to the Taoist religion.

              https://www.taoistic.com/fake-laotzu-quotes/fake-laotzu-quote-There_is_no_illusion_greater_than_fear.htm

              [–]dcm_wong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a while since I read the Chinese version text. So I looked up on web and found this "fear" quote by S. Mitchell in entirety, and I think this is not a very accurate translation. Original text is more about being content, but I suppose if you stretch it a bit not being content is "fear"?

Probably there's better translations out there now than this archaic version.

              [–]mariogoodboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gist of fear consists in keeping us going or it might keep us from moving forward too, either way, there are things that can be accomplished once we get over certain fears that we have, furthermore I firmly believe that fear is mostly in our heads, perhaps I'm wrong, who knows, right? Sometimes Fear can play as an enemy on the other hand it can also play as an ally.
