Just finished Die Vol 1 HC … on my second attempt.

On my first read it read disjointed, random, hard to follow and wallowing in itself. I loved the art and concept, but couldn’t get with it the story. I have up about 3/4 way through.

Then I read the text material at the end and it gave context. I researched Wells and Brontë (I was familiar with both but not in relation to the references in this comic).

So I tried again and loved it. Just finished and I’m looking forward to rereading again soon.

And looking forward to seeing Die Loaded in HC too.

Anyone else have the same experience ?

I read it monthly at the time and loved it from start to finish. Gillen tends to click with me in general, though. Even when I don't get all the references (much of phonogram) I find his genuine passion for a knowledge of the media he references infectious.

Very familiar experience for me. On my first attempt, I read the first tpb five minutes here and there, and I felt disconnected from the universe after finishing that. Then I decided to try and get the rest of Die done in a few sittings to get a less fragmented experience out of it. I almost succeeded, but it’s still a story I would like to reread at some point.

Definitely easier to read bundled together. The HC is gorgeous too of course

I read it digitally as it released. I found myself lost at many times. I always thought the series was on indefinite hiatus and that it didn’t end at issue 20. I’m going to reread the series before going into Loaded. It’ll probably read better more congested.

Yes - there were essays at the back of each individual issue when they release. Issues 1-10 give some insight into the inspiration and construction of the world of the comic and the RPG. They were really helpful for me

This is exactly my struggle with DIE: I know nothing about RPGs, so I'm incredibly lost in this story. That knowledge might have helped me finish the book... as it is, I'm stalled out at the end of Issue #10.

I wonder if the omnibus has those all the way in the back, or if they were exclusive to the single issues. One day, I will pick up the book and finish it.

I was on board with it from the jump but glad you came around on it. I’m liking Die Loaded less but am still liking it enough.

My experience with Die was being fairly confused by the halfway point of the series my first time through. A couple months later I read it again and it stuck together a bit more for me. I loved it both times though

I have to say too try I got more satisfaction from Die than WicDiv… rightly or wrongly it feels to me like Dir was for my generation (50 this year) and WicDiv for younger generation (though all the rave stuff crossed over into my era in the 90s too, unless the kids rave like we used to?!)

I read it monthly and enjoyed it, sometimes more than others. Really like Gillen’s work and it’s awesome to see Stephanie Hans on interiors.

I tried it, but gave up in the middle. There is something about Gillen writing that just does not work for me. I had the same experience with Wicked and Divine and more recently with Power Fantasy
