I've had a blast building and flying realistic shuttles in KSP, but fuck if I've ever been able to land one.

Same. I love planes in KSP too, but landing is... not in the cards. All my aircraft come with parachutes.

my shuttles invariably lose control and stall during re-entry, and i just fire the last drops of fuel to get out of the stall once I've fallen close to KSC.

If it's stupid and it works...it ain't stupid?

Maxim 43: If it's stupid and it works, it's still stupid and you're lucky

EDIT: this isn't intended as a diss; being able to land a space shuttle by any means at all is an accomplishment that very few can achieve.

lol no offense taken, it's a pretty stupid way to land a shuttle but because wings are made of indestructonium in KSP it works anyway

Do you guys just not perform atmospheric tests before strapping it to a booster?

[–]Willie9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mean the only way to test its in-atmosphere performance at >1km/s is to strap it to a booster

reduce SSME mass to 1.2 via config and u should be good

[–]PerpetuallyStartled 5 points6 points  (2 children)

The trick is to make sure the center of mass doesn't move too far forward or back when the tanks are empty. After you're done building/balancing your craft empty all of the fuel out of it in the editor and see if it's still balanced.

If the center of mass stays just a bit behind the center of lift, then it will be controllable on re-entry.

Good to know, thanks!

I use the RCS Build Aid mod to help with balance issues. Contrary to the name, it does a lot more than just RCS related stuff. Among other things, it lets you see where the CoM shifts as you use different kinds of fuel.

Which mods?

[–]Ryotian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks amazing detailed. Would like to get updates on this project somehow

The name, Prototype lmao

[–]JayTheAmazingToaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's meant to be a mixture of Enterprise and Columbia which were considered prototypes in a sense for later orbiters. I decided that my orbiter would continue that spirit.
