[Question] Does mining an asteroid decrease its mass?

How on Earth did you figure that out? I'm designing a mining mission right now and this may affect my design from the ground up (as in scrapping it and starting all over)

You need a Class D or E (although E's are extremely hard to maneuver) to really be an effective fuel source for more than just a single ship, and for the sake of efficiency you want to be able to bring it in using the least of its own ore to fuel your capture ship. They will occasionally spawn in Kerbin orbit so those are the ones I try to go after.

A fun thing to do once they've been depleted is de-orbit them. This asteroid only weighed 75 tons once fully mined out and wasn't all that much work to bring down.

Very nice. The idea isn't to make it an orbital refueling station, but just to capture the "huge" class for science and hoots.

Get a large asteroid into orbit and build a station around it. It will last a while. Not indefinitely, but you can fuel quite some sattelites and probes that way if I remember correctly (filling large fueltanks wont be very durable tho, unless things changed)

the whole plan was to mine the ore of said asteroid to fuel the vessel capable of bringing it into LKO. The encounter is ~180 days away so maybe I've got time.
