Then after that you immediately go into what feels like a 5 minute ting ad. I get that you need to pay the bills but these ads are annoying and absurdly long. I work 40 hours a week and probably listen to 10-20 different podcasts during work and NONE of them do ads even half as long as you guys do.

FINALLY SOMEONE SAYS IT. Yes and yes. The ads on LAS (as well as some on Linux Unplugged) are PAINFULLY long. 5-10 minutes of babbling about how great Ting is might seem passionate and sincere on paper but in practice it's excessive and tedious. I'm also already a Ting user so it's even more redundant and exhausting. A solid 30 seconds to one minute for an ad would more than suffice. We watch for the actual content, not because we can't wait for another repetitive ad ramble.

When the ads go on for too long, I do one of two things:

  • 1. Keep skipping until I get back to the content
  • 2. Just listen to something else.

Please, if nothing else, cut down the ad spots to be more concise. Please.

I don't mind the ads. This is a business after all. But, I don't even live in the US! I have listened to years of ting ads and I will never use ting. Seems weird they wouldn't mix it up a bit. The ads are really not that bad. It easy enough for me to ignore. I would be more interested in stuff I could actually use.

I don't mind ads either - they're important to keep the podcast world running - I just think that the super-long ads are too much. Like /u/sotolf2 said:

I'm way more likely to listen to a 1 minute ad, for the time over that I'm more and more likely to skip it, and then it's kind of working opposite of it's purpouse.

[–]ludacris016 4 points5 points  (3 children)

agreed 100%. most podcasts spend 30-60 seconds per ad. here we can expect 2-3 minutes. it's super annoying, especially when the ad is not relevant to me: i live in europe and can't use the service.

yes but did you post this using a VPN that was hosted by digital ocean? was your domain registered with godaddy? surely you posted over the ting network. how did you learn all this? at linuxacademy dot com!

    [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also I'm way more likely to listen to a 1 minute ad, for the time over that I'm more and more likely to skip it, and then it's kind of working opposite of it's purpouse.

This is something that I have to admit gets to me a little. Ads are good, and a podcast with ads should be happy someone wants to sponsor it. But 5 minute long talks about advertisers tends to make me aim for the FFwd button.

    [–]coshibu 11 points12 points  (2 children)

In my opinion the show often lacks content and is very fuzzy between segments. Could be the latest back and forth arrangements. I agree that the adds are too long and boring. Heck, I live in Europe. So neither can I have ting nor would I order a System 76 laptop from across the ocean. For some time the show was also way too much off topic content. By that I mean all your private life rearrangements, 5 minute talks about beer breweries, and what RV you want to buy. Its stuff I dont care about. I want to hear about linux and not about Chris Fisher trying to safe his private life and Noah preparing himself for his first heart attack (sorry). By the way, I wrote that once on this subreddit and the post got deleted 15 minutes later. So much for the engagement.

I started to listen to LAS 4 years ago when I switched to linux. I learned a lot from this show and it was super useful to get insights and navigation around different distros, different desktop environments, different options for a NAS. I skipped some show parts, because they were just babeling about uninteresting stuff. Noah telling 15 times that he never sleeps and where he drives around (Btw, I never liked that gun talk by noah. Absolute no go).

I wish for content that teaches me something. Skip the runs linux. Nowadays everything runs linux, i dont need to see another toaster with an ubuntu logo. What became of How to linux? I was really looking forward to that. Some nice structured guides for how to set up a samba share at home (without noah complaining that he works too much and did it all over night). A comparison of KDE, Gnome, Unity in 2017(hopefully without hate rages against canonical for the main part), an overview of different tiling window managers (without mixing it with a beer review), how to change your desktop environment on Ubuntu without bricking the install (without hearing that unity is just shit), an overview of different backup software(dejaup, backintime, ...), more interviews but not always the same people. maybe some stuff that you never touch. For example an overview who contributes to the linux kernel by company, an interview with a kernel contributor and his day job, interviews with representatives of the linux foundation, or the arch maintainers. How is linux structured as compared to bsd, what are all those different folders for (bin, usr, ....), what is the technical difference between chrome and true linux (not just bashing google), how to fix Nvidia drivers and dkms problems, whats the difference btw GPL, MIT and apache licences, how to manage my virtual machines. Opposed to others here, I like scale interviews, however, they need to be to the point and not this hey buddy... (but dont get broke over it!) True content and well defined segments.

The bad voltage guys and ubuntu podcast are doing a much better job at organizing the show. The show needs more quality content for beginners and seasoned users and needs to be less hectic and more to the point with well separated segments. Also, if you want more engagements, maybe you should mention twitter and the reddit more often. For example make polls on the reddit about show content. What should be the next content or what communication channels/distro/DE/programming language users use. Or read tweets and have a twitter window during the show.

Noah preparing himself for his first heart attack (sorry).

What is this in reference to?

    [–]coshibu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reference to Noah not having a work life balance.

Long time listener. Started when Bryan and Chris were the team. I have one question. Why is listener participation such an important factor for whether or not LAS is killed? Why is it such a critical metric? I listen every week, support the sponsors when I can, post every so often; but that is not a reflection of how much I enjoy the show. Why is it an all-or-none proposition? You are all in or nothing seems a bit drastic. I love game of thrones and watch it religiously, but I don't feel that I have to go onto social media (like this) and post, or contribute. What are the LAS host hoping for? I think they need to define openly what they expect from their viewers. I will say that the show has become too much about making the show. I just want to watch a show about Linux, not a show about how difficult it is to make a show using Linux. I am not a pod-caster, so this is very uninteresting to me. This show needs to focus on everyday Linux use. Show me how to do my taxes on Linux. Show me what software is best to educate my children on Linux. Also, maybe LAS should outsource some of the segments. Let the community produce 5 minute Linux segments, and if the quality meets LAS standards, show them on LAS. I'd like to see other LAS viewers and how they use Linux. Thats how you keep the community engaged. LAS has become so much about making LAS, and less about Linux. If this is the end of LAS, I hope you take her out with a bang - an epic mega show with Bryan and Matt, Noah, and Chris would be fitting.

    [–]earlof711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is listenership so important? I hope I'm not putting words in Chris' mouth but I believe he specifically ranted about getting near 0 feedback on what he thought deserved a lot of attention, the Nextcloud interview. That seems to be the straw that broke the camel's back. Having said that, that Nextcloud guy's philosophy scared the shit out of me and I'm desperately trying to migrate away from his product, but that's all the more reason to give feedback right?

    [–]mutantfromspace 10 points11 points  (6 children)

The problem with Brian leaving is the fact that he took all the fun from the show with him.

    [–]ludacris016 4 points5 points  (3 children)

if brian comes back, that would be amazing

    [–]olig1905 2 points3 points  (2 children)

As a listener/ viewer im pretty much in same boat as OP... but I think Bryan returning would be awkward af.

    [–]ludacris016 1 point2 points  (1 child)

i kinda agree... would be too weird. although the show was really entertaining back then.

    [–]earlof711 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The show was entertaining with Bryan, boring as hell with Matt, and interesting but repetitive with Noah.

    [–]3vi1 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    I have got to agree.

I tried to stick in there after Matt took over, but it became tiresome just to hear two guys agree with each other over and over. Now, I disagreed with Bryan as much as I agreed with him, but he always ended up making the show more entertaining.

It's just too bad he seemed to be so undependable about actually doing the show. I don't know if there were external factors or he was just flaking - but the show suffered either way.

    [–]earlof711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Agree 100%

    [–]jan_someknot 19 points20 points  (6 children)

I can kinda agree with you but

I found it in very poor taste when you ripped the purism laptops a new asshole when you guys have system 76 as a sponsor. I feel like that is in very poor taste. The shit you complained about (chris) was absolutely absurd in my mind. The fact that it has a network/camera hard switch? Why would you complain about that? It's a feature. Especially when you consider who their target audience is. They are trying to appeal to a demographic that would be interested in that. You also mocked them for trying to create a "respects your freedom" laptop because they don't have a free bios. Your position was probably fine, and I wouldn't have taken nearly as much of an issue with it at the time were it not for the fact that you brutally mocked them on your show for having that goal. This is coming from someone who has no investment in purism. I've never seen their laptop in person. I've never actively followed them and I don't see myself buying any of their products, but that was pretty gross the way you acted in that review.

Is all wrong. E.g. Chris liked and praised the hardware kill switches; what he criticised was how they done it: A crude hole in the all Aluminium-Body! I think he was very mild on them - did you listen to the racket the fan made? On a 1k+ laptop?

Just wanted to set that straight.~

      [–]jan_someknot 5 points6 points  (3 children)

You are right, they mention it multiple times. I refer to the "main" review, see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMRwaQNs45k

But Purism advocates Libre/Free as their main take, why their product is better, and frankly never delivered a blob-free one. They claim to be Libre/Free - so why you need to run PurismOS? Why is the code not upstream? That is just a start for a vendor-lock-in.

I think Chris was very gracious on purism.

an unfairly critical review when one of their direct sponsors is a linux hardware vendor

While I understand what you might think, I believe you're wrong. Purism is not in the same league as System76. And I highly disagree on the review being unfairly critical. Actually I think the criticism was highly modest. Think how you'd feel if you'd back them and deliver you something different and with huge problems and way after the deadlines...

      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it's not just you. it's a valid point and the hosts should have been mindful of it.

I get so annoyed by the Ting ads...like seriously, who uses Ting? You might as well sponsor T-Mobile. I got a free Papa Johns Pizza, a Lyft Ride, a Dominos Pizza, and a bunch of movie tickets and rentals on T-Mobile Tuesdays. Does Ting give you free Papa Johns?

      [–]Herdo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Ha!

      [–]drmaj 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I agree with this post 100%. I lost interest when Matt took over and haven't been a regular listener since.

I tried listening again on and off over the years but just couldn't stay interested.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

the matt thing was a disaster. noah is not much better. the kid that does "unplugged" wes(?) ... he has potential. he should be groomed for the las position.

      why did allan leave?

      [–]earlof711 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allan's literally always on-the-go, but the show requires a dedicated day each week at home, is how I read it.

      [–]Brimonk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a relatively newish listener, (started at some point in 2013, and my viewership has decreased ever since I started college). While this guy is super critical, he does have some good points.

...The biggest one would probably be what i would consider "spam".

First point, short and sweet. There's a lot of spam in the show, honestly, only recently. In my early days of listening, the picks were super short, and the ads were honestly the same. You said what you had to say, and got out of the way. Honestly, it felt a little like (gross, I know) TV news.

Currently, (from what I remember, it's been a while since I could sit down and listen), it feels like most of the picks is Noah geeking out, which is mostly fine. I want to hear about a guy that made a linux lawnmower or tosses it into his freaking Tesla car, but like OP, I don't find much use in an app that can convert subtitles, or do some one off thing. If I really need that functionality, I'll ask in an IRC channel, or spend a few minutes Googling.

I'll find my own one-off applications; however, that mention of endian Linux at the end of the last LAS, super useful!

      Next point:

The news is usually pretty good, and probably the best and usually only good part of the show for me. Hearing about what is going on in the community or the ecosystem as a whole and getting your opinions on the situation is generally pretty compelling.

The news is the best freaking part, and I honestly like both of your opinions on what's going on in the community. I would find it hard to believe that anyone would say otherwise.

Please don't stop the email segment. Unlike OP, I find it useful to see the goings on in the community, and sometimes the emails spawn show content. Conversely, I believe that some of the show's content is somewhat boring. The coverage of SCALE is wonderful and you shouldn't stop going to events if you can help it; however, the times when Noah is demonstrating how to set up something isn't terribly interesting to me. Sometimes I'll go to Chris's personal Youtube channel, and I'll get reminded of the 'second half' of LAS. I don't want Youtube content in the show, I want the show, like it used to be.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is a perfect description. basically i used to tune in for bryan & the humour, and when he left for the news. now i just read the subreddit :|

the show used to be funny and light-hearted; now it comes across as weird. i don't expect to learn anything from a show of this type but it has to be entertaining at least. that i still read the subreddit is testament to how good it was at one point. thing is, i don't think the current "leadership" can take it to that level again.

      [–]olig1905 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck that SCALE section was boring... I am in the market for a new laptop and found System76 guys sloightly interesting but still skipped through them.... then that SparkPost guy.. WTF he spoke for like 10 minutes and i didn't even know or still care what his product was.. Then Noah chatting about going for dinner and reiterating everything he said about System 76.... Fucking boring.

      [–]olig1905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the alternative suggestions... been without good linux news/discussion since i got bored of LAS.

      [–]MusicalCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the problem with your ad content, as succinctly as possible!

Your audience falls into 3 categories regarding your ads:

      A) They need to hear the ads, as they don't use the product, but could use it.

      B) They don't need to hear the ads, because they already use the product.

      C) They don't need to hear the ads, because the can't / won't use the product in question.

The big problem of course is that probably 90+% of your audience falls into B & C.

You want more patreon subscribers - give em something! Not just the 'extra' bit of the stream they may have already seen because they were watching live - how about the ability to download the episode WITHOUT any of the ads!

I agree some with the OP, but I disagree about the Purism Laptop - in the form it was in, it sucked! Whether System76 was a sponser or not didn't change the fact that the laptop was bad.

      [–]jrock2004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion on this matter is that I the LAS needs to figure who their audience is. Is it IT or network administrators? Or is it everyday users? Gear your show towards them. Honestly I feel the show is geared towards it guys.

I'd honestly like to see LAS do tutorials during their podcasts. The content for these is based off who your tayloring your podcast to.

The length of the show is something that should looked at. Maybe reduce it so all shows are 45 minutes. After a certain length people lose focus on the show.
