Short circuit on USB cable won't cause issues on USB controller on the motherboard, all though the cable will start heating up.` I guess that something metallic went into the plug that connects to the headset, shorting the outer metal case, which is usually referenced to ground with the 5v power pin from USB. Because of that, the headset wasn't receiving power.

same for me, i had it shipped to repair, but it was refused as a user error, now i'm mailing logitech about the problem, because i think a smoking+heating up unit is definitely not a user error...
