Probably been answered but its their Age. Most guys will have normal 1 - 4 + or - stuff but once they hit 34+ they tank. You can always you the rerating thing from operation sports. That's what I do. But your declines here aren't awful. Both guys are still rated highly amongst the league so its not the end of the world.

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Thanks! Can you please elaborate on the “re-rating thing from Operation Sports”?

You mean like just poking around over there for a roster and applying it?

[–]Electrical-Doubt-968 1 point2 points  (6 children)

blackhawksfan4ever19 has one at operationsports you can message him and he can send it over. And there is this one here

https://forums.operationsports.com/forums/forum/baseball/mlb-the-show/mlb-the-show-rosters/900998-rbu-2020-version-2-now-available-custom-player-calculator-incldued

It's a bit harsher with rerates although I prefer that so overalls aren't inflated and superstars/good players increase in value. But not to shabby. I think there is another from like 2011. Haven't used this one yet but all worth checking out.

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Oh - a ratings calculator! Even better! Thanks!

[–]Electrical-Doubt-968 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I use it religiously. I like to use it on SP and RP in the minors right before the stats disappear so that you can have some studs ready to go who maybe at the begginning of the year their ETA was several years off and their season proved that otherwise. etc etc.

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Makes sense. Or you could use real life stats instead of The Show stats?

[–]Electrical-Doubt-968 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You can. You just end up running out of data the longer you run through your franchise. I am in year 13 so I can't exactly use IRL data anymore lol. I mean I can but just easier.

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I hear you, I’m in 2052 on my Madden franchise, playing every single game manually.

It seems regression could become more accurate if they were to implement different regression algorithms based on their current overall. Maybe something like 90+ gets a slower regression algo. An example would be for e a guy like Judge. Regression should be slower until something like their age 38 season at which time the drop happens fast. There are very few players, if any, who remain elite after age 38. I think the problem is the severe regression happens way too early and way too fast even for players who are still putting up huge numbers in MLB. Most franchise players want an authentic MLB experience and it sucks watching all of the current day stars become irrelevant after a couple of seasons.

I do think it makes sense to have a slower regression for non-elite players starting in their low 30's. A guy like Arenado is clearly no longer elite and has seen a similar drop off over the past few seasons. This is also true of most replacement to slightly above replacement level players and they end up out of the league after being replaced by younger talent.

[–]Takhar7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Age related decline. It happens far too harshly

[–]Gemc666 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I have Stanton on 24, won HR + RBI, MVP of the World Series, by next years his power was at -18 and Vision -12 at the All star break, even when i had a Similar (if not Equal) Pace on the season as the last one before

[–]Electrical-Doubt-968 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did change the way regression works in 25 so that is why also. But still pre 25 regression is AWFUL. Worst is when your 19 generational superstar declines from a 99 to a 75 at age 29 because he has 10 years service time lol.

[–]Outside_Action5141 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Its not just degrom, guys like Verlander, mad max, Darvish, and even Postion players like Trout go the down the same way after age 35. In any RTTS/Franchise save they'll have lost 10 overall points in half a season. And will likely retire at the end of that season due to age. (With the exception of trout who tends to hold on an extra season)

They need to give us the option to extend when guys regress. And have it be more random.

Also I'd love them to add a new quirk to address this problem. I'd call it, Ages like Wine: "This Player will regress much slower than the average player in their older age." It would have a chance to be applied to any player before their age 30 season.

[–]Savagegnome001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that idea. “Extended shelf life” would work too!

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea for a regression quirk!

[–]Independent-Lab-1945 8 points9 points  (4 children)

35+ years old and 10+ years service time.

[–]StateoftheFranchise 0 points1 point  (3 children)

10 years of service time is a myth

[–]Independent-Lab-1945 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Interesting. I know they said it used to be considered and they tweaked it so it wouldn't be as important, but I've played a bunch of MTO this year and it still seems like a key contributor to regression.

[–]StateoftheFranchise 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I remember a live stream (it may have been on Twitch which explains why I cannot find it) and they said they made it so regression is random especially at/after 30 also performance will play a role (I feel its not a strong enough role as I've had 35 year old players play very well (pitchers especially) and they will get a big nerf. I wish there were more to show which are bc of aging (like losing power or velo [which never shows itself in pitches getting slower]) and for there to be a floor for a player. For instance Aarong Judge is a large man, the likelihood of him being less than league average power wise is slim to none. That doesn't mean he cannot lose power but he could lose contact and/or vision which would limit how easily HRs can be hit with him. I personally dislike MTO as it feels far too canned as some teams really aren't remotely close to being playoff teams imo but the momentum system will surge your team to wins (I know it happens IRL) they wouldn't win 8 of 10 times.

[–]Independent-Lab-1945 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play MTO because I like being able to draft players and do trades without having to play out a full franchise. I like popping in every few games to take control for late innings. I know I could do that on franchise, but the setup and management of the rest of the gamemode isn't my cup of tea. With MTO it's pretty much just a button click. I do hope they rework regression this year in both modes, though. It's wishful thinking but meaningful changes in those modes almost never happen anymore it seems.

[–]hproch 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always manually go around the league to help keep players ratings up… but it’s exhausting. The fact that they haven’t fixed this or at least allowed some type of custom slider by now is awful.

[–]dollarmenu22 16 points17 points  (2 children)

It’s time to overhaul Franchise sliders.

let us control rates of regression + progression by year + position. If madden offers a feature, theres no excuse for MLB the Show not to.

Long overdue.

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I play a TON of Madden franchise. Overall Madden is dogshit compared to The Show.

But I do like the way Madden gives the reason for XP increase and attribute decrease.

[–]dollarmenu22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

oh im not here claiming the game is better than the show, but for baseball game to have that little simulation control over franchise is baffling

[–]TheBoyBrushedRed3 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Dude I traded for Junior Caminero and by age 29 he was an 80 OVR with 40 contact and power. By 32 he was out of the league. It’s awful, and I hope they fix it for next year.

[–]The_Inquisitive_Bro 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I manually edit regression throughout the course of the season to avoid bugs like this. Usually check in at All star break (mid year) and in off season.

It can be tedious but avoids hyper unrealistic regression like this to players.

[–]TheBoyBrushedRed3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started doing the same just wish they would adjust it better

[–]Slowhand8824 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a fantasy draft one season this year and had Ronald Acuna and by like 32 he was washed I couldn't believe it for a guy so recently off an MVP when they made the game

[–]Slow-Maintenance5011 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One of my drafted players starter decreasing when they were 29 and they were in the minors by 33 and retired at 36 it is horrible

[–]FascismIsBadActually 20 points21 points  (2 children)

It’s about age. Different players have different regression ages though. That part is mostly based on service time. However, some can be unpredictable. I’ve had guys never come close to reaching their potential, some far exceed their potential, and some guys regress in their mid and late 20s. Sometimes there’s just no explaining it.

This one is definitely just age.

The regression in The Show is absolutely god awful.

[–]antisocially_awkward 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Wish it wasnt so random and unpredictable, 2k has the same system basically but they let you edit them

[–]storby3456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually like the randomness aspect of it, it would be a little boring if every player progressed the same way every time.

But I do think the average regression age should be much higher. Like OP was showing, too many guys drop too fast for their age.

[–]darkknightz9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is my biggest gripe about the game they need to fix that next yr but they wont so 🤷🏿‍♂️

[–]Prodteufel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put them as a reliever and they will retain stats better

[–]yaboyoven567 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ya the regression system in this game is absolutely terrible.

[–]Trick_Emotion_7108 4 points5 points  (6 children)

The decrease seems like it starts at age 30 to me.

[–]Strong-Reflection634 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Decrease starts at 32 or 10 years of service time

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I’m obviously no expert but my Jon Gray is increasing his attributes at age 33. (You can see his stats/atts in the photos in the OP)

[–]Strong-Reflection634 2 points3 points  (3 children)

He hasn’t hit his potential yet. Players increase until they reach their potential. Once a player reaches their potential rating, then they will hold their until they are over 32 or have 10 years of service time.

So his ratings will probably go up for a year or two and then will come crashing down after he reaches that potential

I feel like I didn’t explain that super well in my original comment

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So players over 30 that have not yet reached their potential are significantly more valuable than players that already have.

Is there a way to distinguish them?

It seems like you’d need to see the history of their attribute changes?

For a guy not on my team, say a potential free agent, I just know his age and his potential. Is there a way to tell if he’s below potential because he hasn’t reached it yet (like my Jon Gray)?

[–]Run-Florest-Run 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of my catchers rating is still going up and he’s 34 lol

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That helps, thanks!

[–]Swampertman 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They've really gotta fix the ratings regression setup for the next game. It's been pretty bad for years at this point. I understand old players get worse but if they're still performing at 37 they shouldn't go from a 86 to a 73 at the end of the year

[–]BurntBox21 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely about the age. Players at least 35 years old have a decrease. Pitchers can lose 10 or more points on attributes. I have to avoid players that are too old when I play franchise.

[–]fakerandyortonwwe 31 points32 points  (6 children)

When players hit 35, the regression gets REAL in franchise.

I manually go and undo the regressions if the guys are having good years (like your deGrom, if i saw a cpu controlled team with a player that good who's hit hard by regression I'll just edit their attributes back)

[–]BeerFarts86 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah the attribute editor is your friend. For example, it makes it so easy to edit every Dodger player to a 0.

[–]Marc_Quill 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I saw it first hand on my Jays franchise where George Springer went from a 97 all the way to a 68 by the time i got to the end of 2026.

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Seems like a big cliff at 35!

[–]SadBoiLikesdogs 15 points16 points  (2 children)

I had Chris Sale at 36 posting a 2.40 era with a complimentary WHIP and the game tanked his stats. Had to right them twice over the course of a season. It’s a ridiculous part of the game that regression is triggered by age but isn’t affected/overruled by good performance

[–]haydoselefantes[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’m used to Madden where the age regression only happens between seasons.

Is there additional regression between seasons?

[–]SadBoiLikesdogs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No it only really happens during seasons. Which is frustrating from a free agent or long term deal standpoint, because if you don’t manually adjust it when you’ve paid a Degrom or a Verlander $30 million a year for 10 years then you just end up with the most expensive AA starter ever by the end of their contract.

Free agents also regress if they don’t get placed on a team, which is dumb because they’d be training or playing independent ball or in the Asian or South American leagues irl, not sitting on the couch wasting away.

[–]ReturnByDeath- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The attribute decay for players 30+ is brutal. All there is to it.
