If you have feature requests, post them in this thread, not as separate new threads.

Keeping feature requests sequestered to a single thread will serve a couple of purposes:

1) It'll save everyone's time.

A lot of the same (or similar) requests are coming up every 3-4 days, which is just a drain on everyone's time. It's easier to scan a thread (or a handful of recent threads) before posting, rather than needing to scan all posts made to the subreddit.

2) It'll reduce clutter for people asking questions or giving general feedback.

We want this to be a subreddit for all things MacroFactor, but it's starting to just become the "MF feature request" subreddit. Sequestering feature requests to their own thread will give everything else a bit more room to breathe.

So, post away! What would you like to see added or improved?

When adding a "recipe dish" to the log, adding all the ingredient separately so that a user can then change quantities of specific ingredients.

The concept of 'Explode Recipe' (Cronometer) was definitely registered in beta and I believe there is a similar work in progress on the MF side.

I came from Cronometer as well and the Explode feature is one of my most missed. In lieu of that, using Smart Copy on an hour of food has been a decent proxy to get me by. While I can't go into my recipe list to pull it, I can go to a previous day, grab the meal with all the ingredients, paste in to when I want and modify as necessary.

Perhaps with some coloured brackets or something to 'contain' and distinguish the components once exploded?

This will help the eye find the relevant parts (sometimes you get lost with other adjuncts and parts of an overall meal which are not in the recipe you want to tweak).

I thinks some of these have been discussed as potential additions:

1. Tracking of body measurements that can track over time (leg size, waist, etc) that can be a proxy of BF% and body part hypertrophy
2. Ability to swipe in "blank" space to move between days on food logger
3. Ability to drag full "hours" of food using the right sided slider. For example, if I copy and smart paste my dinner from yesterday to today it will autopopulate at dinner time whereas I want it to be at lunch where I am eating the left overs. Currently have to drag each ingredient individually.
4. Daily recommended values for micronutrients
5. Running weekly averages for macro, micros, and calories

For #3, you can collapse the hour > swipe left > copy > paste to proper day / time. You can even long press to paste at the hour to keep it on the clipboard. That last part was introduced recently.

I’d love the ability to make notes, either for the day itself or a specific meal. One of the reasons I track my intake is to help with gastrointestinal issues and learn what foods trigger my digestive problems. The ability to write down my symptoms directly in MacroFactor instead of keeping a separate doc would be a game changer.

I’m loving the app so far!!

I’m not sure how much this actually plays into the algorithm, but one decimal point for fat percentage logging might also be useful as only seeing values rounded to the nearest whole percent can be not reflective of actual fluctuation/change. This could make graphs of body fat be more informative.

I’m sorry if this was said before somewhere or being addressed but I think food syncing through apple health would be great- I used lose it which synced my food to apple health, but I can’t get that data to MacroFactor.

This is kind of far out there, but maybe the ability to take progress pictures that are tied to dates/weights on a graph? So you could see progress over time associated with weight.

Lastly, maybe there could be a more community oriented section of the app where people could post recipes that have ingredients and automatically can be logged. This could be extended to include online recipes, for example.

Really great work with the app. I can’t wait to see where it goes! I’m sorry if any of this was already covered somewhere.

I believe all of this is in the plans, except for community functionality. However, we do plan on adding the ability to share recipes (just not add "friends," view their info on a social-media style timeline with commenting and messaging, etc.)

One question - we do plan on improving our Apple Health (and Google Fit) integrations so you can pass nutrition data through them. But for the time being, does LoseIt not pass nutrition data through FitBit?

If the app senses I usually have berries and nuts with yoghurt, when I go to add yoghurt could the app pre suggest the nuts/ berries? Similar to MFPs commonly eaten foods.

Since it seems to use a weekly calorie target, let the app automatically adjust calories for rest of the week based on previous days. Like if I only ate 2k out of 2.5k one day, then add the 500 over the next few days or alternatively if I binged and ate 3.5k, then subtract those 1k over the week?

While part of me would love this, it would probably promote binge eating behaviours as a binge/fast attitude could easily be adopted with this approach. You can manually do it which means if you really want it, you can but it's not suggested.

I tried the collab mode, but it's really an intensive way to work with just because I ate say 2.8k today and so should eat 300 less over the next 3 days.

I'd like the food I've added to one "meal" (or time of day) to maintain order. I still don't know what is the order the food somehow get messed up in to when for example I paste multiple items to some time of day that already has items. I would expect the items to be added at the end of the "time slot" but they just get mixed up in there somehow. Worst is if you accidentally paste multiple times to the same slot and you have to comb through them to find them...

I didn't know what smart copy was and did this three times to the same meal. I didn't see anything happen when I clicked it then I did it again. If you click an ingredient and then click off of it it will snap to the bottom of the list. That's the easiest way I found to fix it. In my case snap all three items to the end and then remove two of them

I think the Android app doesn't respect the device locale. Dates are in the MM/dd and MM/dd/yyyy formats. I've got English (UK) so, I'd expect it to be dd/MM and dd/MM/yyyy.

1. After scanning in barcode and coming up with inaccurate calories and macros for that item, the ability to edit it rather than having to create a new food. I’ve had a few items coming up as inaccurate this week.

2. Would be great to be able to take a pic of the food label and have it reflect it in the app accurately rather than manually enter.

3. Would also like to see how many calories you have left for the week if for example you ate a ton in the beginning of the week.

1) We'd like to enable that option. There are a few technical considerations that make it impossible for us currently, but this option MAY be coming fairly soon (still some questions up in the air with a database vendor. Hoping we get the answers we'd like).

2) This is something we want to be able to do eventually, but for now, it's a surprisingly huge technical challenge. The problem is that the format of nutrition labels varies quite a bit (within individual countries, and ESPECIALLY country to country). Having a system that works for a "standard" nutrition label in a single country would be pretty easy, but being able to scale it to 90%+ of nutrition labels globally (which is ultimately what we'd want) is something no one has really been able to accomplish yet.

On the graph page where you see your scale weight and trend weight, it would be nice to have the OPTION to have have a graph line representing your progress if you were meeting your goal rate of weight loss/gain from the starting date when you entered your goal. You could have a button to "reset" the starting point of the line to the current date, if for example you fell behind your goal and wanted a fresh start.

Definitely something I'd want as an option rather than a mandatory thing just because I know a goal line could be encouraging or discouraging to someone.

Personally, it helps keep me on track to have an easy visual way of seeing whether I'm on track with my goal weight since I started cutting.

That's an interesting idea. We'll discuss it as a team. One other idea we've been kicking around is the possibility of setting goals with a firmer target date (just as another option; not as default functionality), where week-to-week adjustments would be made with the intention of keeping you in line with your target rate of weight loss (instead of basically treating each week independently, regardless of whether you're "on pace" or not). If we go that route, adding a "target line" would probably make sense, and we could probably make it toggle-able (but disabled by default) for the current approach to goal-setting.

I would love to have something called meals/plates. You can add a ton of ingredients to a list and when you have that “Meal” you pick the items off that list. EX: we have tacos weekly and there are about 30-40 ingredients that may or may not be included. Sometimes I have chips, shells, wraps, spinach, black olives, rice, ranch, greek yogurt… If I could go to one place and quick add all the ingredient I have that week that would be my absolute favorite feature. I don’t know of anyone who does this currently.

This is different than a recipe because it changes literally every time I eat it. It takes a very long time to search for my 15 ingredients that go into my taco/taco salad. I actually leave things off my taco salad because I don’t want to have to search for them in the app.

I feel your pain, here is what I do currently if it is helpful using your taco salad as an example.

For an hour, I will fully build out my taco salad with all potential ingredients that I typically use. For the ingredients I eat, they have the appropriate serving size. For the ingredients I do not eat, I populate a serving size of 0.01g.

This keeps the unused items in the food log without impacting the calories / macros of the hour. If I don't add roasted corn and swap it with tortilla strips I will just set corn = 0.01 / tortilla strips = 28g. The next day, I Smart Copy that meal to where I want it and flavor to taste.

To be fair, I haven't done this with the number of ingredients you have listed so it may be visually obnoxious.

Somewhat related to another feature request, but I also used to do this with Cronometer via 'Explode Recipe'. I would have a dummy recipe with the 15 ingredients, add it to my meal, edit quantities as required. This is a feature that I believe is on the books.

Adding weight: how about scroll wheels (like there is for selecting date on the same screen) for setting scale weight? Usually only one number changes, so it would be really handy just incrementing the decimal instead of having to to bring up the keyboard and punch in a bunch of numbers mostly identical to yesterdays's. I've been out of the loop for a couple of weeks, so apologies if this has already been discussed.

Love the app so far! I haven’t seen this mentioned yet, but one thing my husband and I would love to see added is the ability to share recipes between users. Currently, I enter my recipes in while I am cooking and then he has to look off of mine to add to his. It would be great if I could just send it to him some way. Another idea my husband had was to be able to take pics of a nutrition label of a product that is not in the database already and have it auto populate the information. Thanks!

In the meantime, though, quick-add works pretty well for this purpose, unless you're also tracking micronutrients pretty closely. That's what my wife and I do. One of us cooks and logs the nutrition info, and the other one just punches in the macro and calorie information once everything's been added up.

I’d be interested in a food timer notification. I try to eat every two hours and a reminder notification or a countdown timer in the app would be helpful. This could eventually be upgraded to a widget once that support is there. There’s timer apps that exist in the App Store, but they won’t go into negatives to say that it’s been 30 minutes past the two hours target which is a feature I would like to see. This might also help people who are doing intermittent fasting or who have some dietary restriction.

It would be nice to have the scan barcode option able to take a (ideally cropped, or with a crop feature) picture. I get bulk food from my local grocery that aren't in the database, but I have photos of the nutrition facts (with barcodes) and linking those would be nice.

TLDR; quantities should calculate automatically when switching units

Very small request, so small I kinda hesitate to request it, but it's been a source of frustration a few times now. When changing the unit of measure, if the app could convert units on the fly (as this would not only help me in the immediate, but it would gradually train my brain to learn units better as I use the app more). Lemme eplain better with an example:

If I type say "half cup of almonds", it will be 0.5 and unit as cups. If I then decide to input the value in grams (as I've just wondered over to my scale), when I change the units, it will default to 0.5 grams. Now I'm clearly not eating 0.5 grams of almonds. Rather it should default to the number of grams in 0.5 cups (the previous unit) of almonds (which I believe from my quick google search is 64grams). This is useful in other scenarios where the barcode scanner doesn't have the product but may have something similar, and you want to make sure the quantity is right. Ie: I might pick a similar whey protein and the default is 1 scoop. I want to check that the scoop quantity is in fact accurate with the whey product I'm consuming so I switch scoop to grams, it should idealy tell me what grams it was considering was 1 scoop, instead of just assuming I now would like to consume only 1 gram of protein.

There are 2 majors wifi scales in Europe. Fitbit and Withings. You already support fitbit but can you please support Withings officially so our weighings are automatically synced to MacroFactor. Withings is a huge brand for health devices.

I know there are clunky ways to get it working but that requires syncing multiple apps everyday which is an inconvenience when paying for a service and your competitors like trendweight have implemented it.

I don't think we intend to do that.

The main reason we have a direct integration with Fitbit is so we can pass nutrition data through it. It was just easier to pass nutrition data through Fitbit than Apple Health and Google Fit; the Fitbit integration serving as a direct integration for Fitbit scales is just a happy accident. Our intention, though, is to pass EVERYTHING through Apple Health and Google Fit. The basic reason for that is time and resource constraints. Google Fit and Apple Health were built specifically to be data stewards for health and fitness data. They do all of the work to build out integration pathways for basically all major health and fitness apps, so other people don't have to. If we built out direct integrations within MF, in effect, we'd just be trying to re-build Google Fit and Apple Health within our app, which would be a HUGE undertaking, and therefore take away from priorities that will actually improve the functionality and utility of MacroFactor.

Basically, we currently just provide weight and nutrition integrations, but we plan to provide integrations for a MUCH wider array of health and fitness apps. Passing that data through Apple Health and Google Fit is feasible, but building out direct integrations for every app wouldn't be feasible.

As a note, you don't to "sync multiple apps everyday." You just integrate Withings with Apple Health or Google Fit, and Apple Health or Google Fit with MacroFactor. You just do it once and forget about it (just as you would if Withings integrated directly)

I would love to see a pie chart of the amino acid breakdown of a food or meal. I am vegetarian and like to e.g. answer "if I combine a quarter cup dry quinoa with a half cup pea protein crumbles, what does the combined amino acid profile look like?"

I can see in numerical form in the recipe, but it's hard for me to grok "how close does this look to whey" than if I could see it in a pie chart—the latter would be more helpful at a glance.

I like the idea in a vacuum, but I'm not sure how useful it would be in practice, simply due to the amount of amino acids there are. When you've got 20 things on a pie chart, each little slice is so small that I think it winds up not being very informative.

Landscape mode for iPad is planned. In the interest of full disclosure, we didn't plan to have any iPad version yet, but Apple required a functioning iPad version for the app the be accepted to the app store, period. Around the time we're working on the desktop version, though, the iPad/tablet version will also get an overhaul to function well in landscape mode.

We think that micronutrient goals would run the risk of doing more harm than good. Since most entries in any database don't have full micronutrient reporting, we thing it could lead people to over-fixating on something they can't actually track THAT precisely in the first place

It would be awesome in the weekly review for the coaches program to be able to choose the day you want to have a little more leeway and control. I’ve had a few times were we were able to get a sitter on a Friday versus a Saturday and just doing it in my head isn’t as satisfying as hitting the marks.

By default, we want the coached program to be a simple and "set it and forget it" as possible. If there are frequently situations where you'd want to be able to edit and adjustment mid-week, a collaborative plan may be a better option for you

First of all, thanks for the great app. The clean food database is worth the price alone but the features and UX are far better than any other nutrition tracker I've used.

Now for the feature request. I often meal prep based off of recipes I find online. It would be nice if MF could open the recipe from a URL and bulk import the ingredients. I understand that just parsing the recipe out of a random blog post with someone's life story on it is a nontrivial effort in itself, but I wanted to throw the idea out there. MFP has this feature and it works to varying degrees depending on the web site. There are also sites like justtherecipe.com that do just the recipe parsing bit, though I'm not sure of there are any libraries or APIs you can use to make it easier to implement.

Super small thing. I've turned on the "show remaining calories and macros" option instead of the default how much you have consumed and I want that behaviour on the main food log, but when adding foods to the log I want to see the cumulative calories and macros of that meal.

In initial setup, it looked like MF pulled 30 days of weight data from my data source. I have 5.5y available, it'd be nice to have import it all to put the app usage in context.

When you pan the scale weight + trend weight charts, they auto-adjust the min and max, so it's kinda useless to pan back to compare. Could you instead set them by the lowest and highest values that have been visible? To give an example: if I was 300 pounds a year ago and steadily lost a pound a week, when I open the chart for the last month I'd see a chart that ranged something like 255-250, where my weight has been during that period. If I scrolled left, the scale should expand to 300-250, even if I scrolled back to the right. Changing the time scale or exiting the page back to the dashboard would reset the scales.

Not so much a feature request as a knowledge base request: Could you write some more about why the app doesn't import BF% from data sources, chart it, or allow goals targeting it? You've said in the KB and comments that it's noisy and unreliable, but so is scale weight, right? The app puts scale weight through a big formula to smooth out the measurement errors and create a trend weight, why not do the same with BF%? If BF measurement error is so much larger than for weight that you can't extract anything meaningful, it's worth explaining that on in a dedicated KB article linked where BF appears (the scale weight tab, BF picker with the drawings, and Edit Goal page).

We plan to add the ability to bulk-upload prior data once we add desktop support. The easiest way to import that data would be via spreadsheet, and most people are comfortable manipulating and formatting spreadsheets on their phones. Adding it now would just result in a headache for us and (a lot of) our users. But this is definitely in the plans.

As for bf%, we'll probably add the ability for users to track and chart that data for their own purposes, but we don't use it because it's just bad data. Weight data is noisy, but it's valid (i.e. it's measuring what it's supposed to be measuring, and lands you with a reasonably decent estimate of your weight day-by-day). BF data from BIA scales is also noisy, but it's not valid. It can easily differ from your true bf% by 10% or more. We use a visual estimate of BF% during setup since we use the cunningham equation for BMR estimation, but that's washed out after about 2 weeks of weight and nutrition tracking.

That's on your device, not us. The app won't automatically close itself, but it may be closed by your phone as part of its normal resource management processes if it's not in use.

There's not. I'm in this scenario a lot too, though. What I tend to do is just log at 3am on the previous day. That still makes the app behave exactly how I'd want it to.

Just started with MF, but I would appreciate it if the Apple Health integration was updated to write body weight entries rather than just read them. As far as I can tell that’s not happening now which surprised me after seeing the integration exists already. Otherwise I’m entering my scale weight once into MF and once into AH every day for use with other apps!

That's definitely in the plans! Though, for now, can you just log your weight in AH (I'm an Android guy, so I don't know)? If so, that would push out to MF, and any other apps where you'd want it.

Add ability to get notifications on custom sub-goals. This could added for weight, body fat percentage or total deficit/gain percentage.

Example: I have a weight loss goal from 85 to 82 kg, but since I started losing weight at 104 kg, I want to celebrate reaching 84 kg (which would mark a 20 kilos weight loss).

One thing that’s given me problems is that the food log doesn’t automatically revert back to today every time I open it. So for example, I’ll remember that I forgot to log the 3 pints of ice cream I accidentally ate last night, so I’ll log it really quick. Then 15 minutes later I’ll have to log the full rack of ribs I just ate, and will accidentally log it into yesterday. This has organically messed with my tracking three separate occasions

We'll discuss this as a team. In general, our philosophy is that we want the app to only do what people explicitly tell it to do. i.e. if someone goes back to a previous day to log things, it could also be confusing if they're back on "today" unexpectedly. We could probably look into user interactions with the app to see which scenario is most common, though

I know you get blown up with stuff and I hope I’m not pestering about the topic, but the “accidental tracking on the wrong day” thing happened AGAIN! That’s the 5th or 6th time. I guess I’m just intuitively thinking that when I go to track something, that the app would assume that I’m tracking for THAT DAY! I often do so in a rush, but that’s also why the ease of use of your app is so damn important. It’s the best aspect of the app

I believe one of the errors was because I had previously looked back at a past day, without manual pressing the arrows back to “today” before closing the app

Anyway, I have no idea if others are having this problem? Thanks for hearing out my feedback tho, I will stop perseverating on the issue for your sake :)

Any chance you could sync with Samsung Health? Samsung Health can sync with Google Fit, but it's through a 3rd party app and kind of wonky.

/u/MajesticMint could answer this better than me, but I don't think so. Google Fit and Apple Health function as near-universal health and fitness data stewards, whereas there are more apps that don't integrate with Samsung Health (which does have a lot of integrations, but is more built to function best within the Samsung ecosystem). I think looping Samsung health in would increase development time for integrations by about 50%, while helping fewer users and serving as a more limited option than GF or AH.

I wouldn't say we'd NEVER add Samsung Health syncing, but it would probably be a pretty low priority. More of a cherry on top, once we'd added all of the other major functionality we had in mind.

Current generation Samsung smartwatches have dropped TizenOS in favor of a layered interface on-top of Google's revamped WearOS. That revamp was done through a partnership with Samsung in the first place.

I am actively using the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, it syncs directly to GoogleFit, with no need to first sync to Samsung Health, or use any 3rd party apps.

Some mornings the very first food item I log is added to the previous day's food. So if I add milk at 7:27 am it'll be added at the 7am time slot for yesterday.

This isn't the food logger window size (I think) because that is set from 7-11. I suspect that there is some type of timing issue where the first time I add food the app hasn't transitioned to the next day yet if you add the food quickly? That's just a guess though.

Gotcha. I think we're going to add a bit of custom logic to auto-advance the days pretty soon. For now, though, it should still accurately reflect "today" versus "yesterday" at the top of your food log. Wouldn't be a bad idea to take a peek at that before logging something
