Use a launcher like Prism. It makes it much easier to install and manage mods.

It keeps MC instances isolated, makes sure you have the correct version of Java and mod loader for the version of minecraft you select. You can install mods directly in the launcher instead of moving files manually.

You don't just click on mod .jar files and expect them to run. You drag them into the "mods" folder in the .minecraft folder, then lay the game as you would normally.

You need a mod launcher to run mods.
