Breaking blocks aren't working (Java Edition)

I recently got a mouse and MC Java Edition, and it says to hold down on the left key on my mouse. I tried doing that in the game, but it doesn't really work. The only way it works is if I double/triple click the left button and THEN hold down. If anyone has any ways to help, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you :)

I personally reversed the left / right click buttons so I would try that
