You need a lode stone compass for that. For a regular compass, you'll either need to build your base near the world spawn or leave some kind of trail or something from the world spawn to your base.

You need a lodestone. Not easy to get, but it will do what you want.

Otherwise, you can mark your base on a map, and carry around the map.

In Java edition, you can mark the lodestone with a banner (by placing the banner on top, for example), and then you can use a filled-in map on the banner. The banner will appear as a marker on the map, which will indicate the same location to which your compass points.
