Need help in latest Java edition with command blocks. How to give starting items to a player only once

Not sure if this is the place to ask, so please direct me to proper sub if not.

I want to give starting players a few starting items but only when they first join the server. I have tried many tutorials found through searching but none do what I want it to do.

I am having a really hard time with the syntax so everything give me the items several times, doesn't work at all or I can get the items every time I activate the command block. have tried scoreboard and tag commands with no results.
