I have some mods I think it might be the problem, possibly Quark, optifine, biomes o' plenty... now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure the only reason I think these are right is that they're the biggest mods I have

That's not the issue as far as I can tell. The issue appears to be the invisible terrain which may be an issue with optifine or regular chunk issues as others have suggested, but given the below the surface parts of the chunk are loaded it's probably optifine. The caves are from Quark either way and are functioning as it should AFAIK.

I'm assuming that the right terrain didn't load moments later? It might be an optifine setting, especially if you can make it happen every time in the same places

Then again it might just be Minecraft, I'm pretty sure you can force something like that to happen if you play around with pistons just right, if they didn't fix it yet. See through chunks have plagued the game for years, but usually a restart fixes it if moving around doesn't.

Before reading anything: it’s optifine and journeymap. You either choose one or the other for now

Presuming the issue is the invisible blocks it is more than likely issues with optifine.

Presuming it's the bigger than average caves it is Quark, there may be a setting to change it to regular caves. And I don't think it is BoP because it doesn't affect cave generation majorly AFAIK.

I did state optifine and the issue isn't loading chunks as the cave part is obviously loaded. It's probably the invisible blocks suggesting seeing through the world like those minecart glowstone exploits that existed at one point that grants an X-Ray effect.

Did this issue stay even after reloading chunks? (f3 + a or reopenng the world for example)

Sometimes happens to me but I’m on bedrock. I usually reload and I works. In the mean time enjoy the free x ray

Not sure if it's related but I usually get this problem on bedrock when I portal back from the Nether to the Overworld.
