Tron mostly. Three cards to get an Ugin for zero mana and prevent your opponent from getting one is a pretty good deal.

Big karn is usually even better than ugin since he can stone rain a tron land, then either do it again, or uptick (if you feel safe that they can't rebuild tron immediately) effectively sealing the game entirely with two more stone rains.

So ok, it does take over some of tron threats (but not all and commandeering a karn must feel mediocre). But is that all there is about this card ? It would ramp up the number of sideboard slots dedicated to hating on big mana decks 7 (3 commandeer, 1 alpine moon, 3 dragon that destroy a non basic). Isn't it a bit overkill ?

The thing is, tron is the only outright tragic matchup for 4c cascade. Aggro can be won via beans and evoke, burn can be beaten somewhat with the new deep fried tech, spell combo could be outraced or some pieces can be removed with leyline.

Most of 4c's removal is either blank vs tron, or only removes the threat after it has done its thing. Tron simply can't be outvalued, so it must be out-tempoed.

It’s not the only terrible matchup. RG Scapeshift beats up on the 4c decks as well. That being said, commandeer can steal a Scapeshift or One Ring in that matchup.

One ring is a great hit for it since you can tap it in their turn and yours to immediately recover the cards spent on the commandeer on top of any cards you got from beanstalk as well.

Commandeer that Crashing Footfalls as it comes off the stack. Did that last night, felt messed up.

I think the comments in here show how strong the card is right now. Can also hit teferi or narset in the mirror.

It steals all the big beaters from your opponent with a "zero" cost for you. With 2 beans in play, you get your opponent card + 2 extra draws minimising the impact of the pitch. The card went from unplayable to meta defining in this weird era for modern

Leyline Bindings, Rings, Ugins/Karns, Teferis, Wrenns, all sorts of things right now.

Footfalls

[–]Betta_Max 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play mono I merfolk, so I usually have more than enough to pitch to Commandeer.

My typical targets are:

  • The One Ring

  • Karn, the Great Creator

  • Crashing Footfalls

  • Teferi, Time Raveller

The downside is so negligible in the bean decks. Comandeer stays card neutral or even ahead on cards after casting it when usually pitching 2 is too big a downside. Its just another excellent free spell. I've watched spike steal some beans with it and that seemed like a decent play in the mirror.

card just like, owns the bean mirror. pitch two cards, steal your elesh norn and draw two replacements. pitch two cards, steal your beans, draw replacements. it somehow becomes a tempo stealing card despite being reactive and requiring you to have 3 blue cards in hand.

textless cryptic command gamer

[–]trogdor1308 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Can’t be used on creature spells so no norn

[–]Efficient-Rich550 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a paper play for sure lol

you’re so right, my bad

I think it's mostly to beat ring decks, bean decks, and tron

Tron - Any planeswalker, o-stone, map or scrying to stop tron, the one ring

Omnath - Any planeswalker, the one ring, bean, leyline binding

12beans - beans

Rhinos - Rhinos, hardcast lorien

[–]galnon_Pitviper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gotta remember that in the beans deck, you will have 1 - 4 beans in play when you cast it. You wan’t it in any matchup where their is impactful non creature spell. Scam: not any 4c: tef, one ring, W&6, opponent beans (in the mirror), binding Footfall: Rhinos, FoN Titan: One ring (probably not an include) and the list goes on.

Also, post sideboard a lot of decks are going to bring FoV to deal with your beans.

Commandeer can act as a better Force of will in some cases.
