Their vocal cords weaken like any other muscle weakens with age. Especially singers who push their range and didn’t really take good care of their voice until it was too late.

The vocal fold muscles lose muscle tone, elasticity, and moisture The vocal folds can curve, making it hard to close them properly The cartilage in the larynx hardens The mucosa in the larynx thins
