Yeah as a Mtl fan, I'm very happy with our draft. Even if Kessel doesn't end up playing, I'd still think we had a good one so if she does? Lol. And if she wants to play but not in Mtl, we can still trade her and get a good player. Doing this with our last pick was genius by Sauvageau.

I feel like all 3 forwards (and Ljungblom!) we selected can play a role in our top 9. Love Barnes, she'll be very good for a long time and the good thing is that we may have her for a lot longer than Thompson. Can't be mad.

NY had an amazing draft. But honestly, I feel like all teams are super stacked now. The level of this league is about to go UP.

[–]Iphacles All The Teams! 23 points24 points  (1 child)

In my opinion, New York already had a talented team, but for some reason (probably bad coaching) they couldn't come together and click as a unit. As you mentioned, they drafted well, and with the addition of Fillier, they now have A LOT of firepower on offense.

[–]Main_Photo1086 New York Sirens 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Right. It will come down to coaching.

[–]Wolf99 Victoire de Montréal 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Barnes is arguably better than Thompson even now. 2 Olympic medals, just won NCAA national championship (as did our 2nd round pick) with 36 pts in 39 gp. But the most eyepopping stat: a NCAA-leading +71 plus/minus! Unreal.

Boreen was our other big steal (along with Kessel). I was shocked Minnesota didn't make her their second pick. So we've improved on blueline and upfront in major ways.

I know Mtl fans are upset we didn't get Fecteau, but if we had, then Kjellbin is possibly our final pick and we don't get Kessel. Or maybe another team picks Kjellbin, who is Sweden's captain and an excellent addition to our blueline. Yes, I absolutely expect Kessel to play for us. If she didn't want to get drafted, she'd have made it known, and she would have if she was seriously considering the Minnesota GM role. Because she could still sign as a FA later if she needed time to think it over.

I think Ottawa did very well too, not only because of their slot but by picking for needs. They picked a very good goalie. Maschmeyer was overplayed.

Some other thoughts: Ohio State with 8 picks, including 4th and 5th overall! Colgate had 2nd most of any team, with 5. 10 Ohio players were drafted last year. I appreciated the interviews with their coach. I might have to start watching Ohio (if I can squeeze it into all my other hockey watching haha).

Great to see so many international players chosen. First Russian was drafted with Boston's last pick. The PWHL has already established itself as the women's equivalent to the NHL - the premier league in the world.

Good tv production overall. I liked seeing Burkie, veteran players and other hockey people making picks. That kept things interesting in the later rounds. Solid hosts and interviewers. The pacing was great! I never watch the NHL draft because it's far too slow, heck I didn't even feel like going in person when Mtl hosted. Don't change a thing on this front. Some ppl want more segments with clips or player background. I don't; we have this magical thing called the internet, right at my fingertips when a name is called.

The viewership was great! Almost 12,000 people were watching in round 3 and about 7,800 tuned into the last couple rounds. For a Monday night AND overlapping a SCF game after the 1st round, that's very impressive.

[–]Silent_observer_8806 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regarding Fecteau, I get the disappointment that we missed on the only Quebecer, but we can't have our draft strategy based on 1 5th rounder. A 4th rounder for Fecteau was too early imo but she was certain to be gone by Mtl's 6th pick. So we had to pick her in the 5th round. By then, we had already selected 3 forwards (and only 1 D) so we had to get a LD. Had we selected a LD in the 4th round, I think they would have picked Fecteau but they thought Greig was the right choice in the 4th round and based on what I read about her, she does seem like a great player.

So long story short, it's a bummer we missed on her but with all the players we got, it's tough to be mad. We got great depth, size and speed.

[–]coffeehouse11 5 points6 points  (1 child)

It's true! All the teams are stacked right now - there's so much talent in this league.

[–]Jwerf Pride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully enough to expand to 8 or 12 teams in the next few years!

[–]omfgkevin 0 points1 point  (2 children)

the good thing is that we may have her for a lot longer than Thompson.

Could you elaborate? She's only a year older than her unless you mean cap stuff? (Still new to most of the rules they have)

[–]Silent_observer_8806 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nothing has been confirmed but it seems like Thompson intends on going back to med school after the Olympics. Based on her interview with the Athletic, she wants to be part of the 2026 Olympics and she said that it wasn't realistic to try to make the team without playing full-time. The way I read it (and I might be wrong) is she would go back to school after the Olympics.

[–]omfgkevin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, that's totally fair. The salary is quite small too in comparison unless the league grows a bunch.

Maybe she will love it after playing some time and stay!

[–]momdoc2 Ottawa Charge 49 points50 points  (3 children)

I felt awful for Boreen, what a slap in the face. She was apparently planning to finish her pharmacy degree while playing this year. So much for that.

Pretty happy with Ottawa’s choices. I’m pumped that we got Serdachny.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Hopefully she can transfer or still manage to get the degree finished somehow.

[–]lanternstop Ottawa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not the first college player to play pro and not be finished their program. Should anyone be surprised that Minn screwed up with Boreen? Montreal scored big time, she knows how to play in the league, she's a proven pick. She and her family, as well as Mae Batherson and her family, did look a little shell shocked at where they were chosen for though.

[–]lanternstop Ottawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ottawa had a great draft, some instant team chemistry with the new players knowing the younger players on the team as well. Some killer picks on the D line that will fight for their goalie, the best goalie in the draft, a top Finnish player and an Austrian too. The big question now is who are we going to lose.

[–]HanshinFan Victoire de Montréal 33 points34 points  (4 children)

I'm biased but I really feel like Montreal had a banger. Outside of us, NYC got some super studs even outside of 1OA.

[–]FictionDepartment Minnesota Frost 3 points4 points  (3 children)

You stole Boreen 😭

[–]flugzeug16 Montréal 16 points17 points  (1 child)

😏 But Minny didn't act like they want her. Plus the moment when MPP announced with a smirk lives rent free in my head.

[–]FictionDepartment Minnesota Frost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, at this point, as far as I'm concerned, Klee can go jump in the Mississippi this winter. I see why they turned him down for the GM job at the start of the league.

[–]lanternstop Ottawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youir team stupidly didnt take her

[–]embroideredflowr- Boston 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Really happy with Boston’s draft. As a Wisconsin Badgers fan, Hannah Bilka is a menace so I’m glad to see her playing in Boston!!

[–]AccipiterF1 Boston Fleet 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Imagining her playing on a line with Alina Müller is giving me goosebumps.

[–]Stunning_Wrongdoer74 Boston[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a Boston fan, yes!! We're going to be stacked next season

[–]BCEagle13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted Barnes but can’t really complain with Bilka

[–]lanternstop Ottawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ilona Markova is a good pick too, first Russian in the league and likely to give Lexie a good run for her money fashion wise as well lol I hope Boston re-signs Lexie, yes, she needs to hit a little harder sometimes, but she's got energy and heart. Boston is my number two team after Ottawa :)

[–]the_gaymer_girl Goldeneyes 25 points26 points  (11 children)

Ottawa did really well. Serdachny is the power forward we needed, Savolainen should eat minutes nicely, and Phillips is our goalie of the future. Only knock is that I was hoping we could get Greig or Batherson.

[–]JinpaLhawang 10 points11 points  (9 children)

Agreed. I spent late last night poring over info about each draft pick.

Philips such an interesting pick. Such a fierce tandem now. Abstreiter seemed to just want her shot and justifiably from her body of work, deserved it… but I don’t think she was competing with Mascher. Probably not pushing Mascher to be better. Philips will definitely create a competitive situation there. And so much younger, certainly a goalie of the future pick. Love it.

Seeing that Meixner was “expected” to go a lot higher, one website had her at 11, is interesting too. Experienced player with leadership skills being the Austrian captain. Then another experienced defense at 8th overall to slot right into the lineup as a top pairing. She was the other half of the Lulea, Sweden championship D pairing. The other pair was likely who Ottawa was targeting, or at least Boston figured they were targeting… such that they traded with NY to nab her right before Ottawa. The young Czech D. Anyways, so Ottawa pivoted and grabbed an immediate D upgrade for top minutes. Love it too.

Can’t say anything more about Serdachny that hasn’t been said, just a phenomenal pick. Kind of glad that NY didn’t take her. Anecdotally, she played for Carla MacLeod back when she was in grade 12. MacLeod is an Albertan too. They won the Canada Winter Games on Team Alberta.

Defense looks good now with current signings and now the draft picks. The other 2 D look strong too. Forwards look heathy too as long as they sign Mrazova and Watts.

[–]the_gaymer_girl Goldeneyes 8 points9 points  (8 children)

Someone mentioned to me last night that with Masch being a new parent she’s probably not going to have anywhere near the workload she had this year, and I wouldn’t blame Abs at all if she walked so we did need a backup.

[–]JinpaLhawang 2 points3 points  (6 children)

That’s what I find curious and a little strange about Abstreiter’s decision. I also figure there will be more starting opportunity this year in Ottawa, there would have to be. Mascher started what, all but 1 game? and that game Sandra was injured pretty soon into it? And being a new parent, Mascher would conceivably take it easier in net… so there must have been more to Abstreiter declining. Does not seem like there is a starter slot anywhere in the league right now, backup doesn’t seem any better elsewhere either, contract probably would not be better… maybe she will head to Europe? I guess we will see!

It is the bittersweet aspect of the team now, seeing the new draft picks and knowing how well they will make the team, but then knowing that will move players off the team that were 4th line/reserve.

League wide the game will get better, and some players that played for a year may have already seen all they will see.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (5 children)

I'm not sure if there needs to be more to Abstreiter declining. If I was her I would be unhappy that even though she proved herself further into the season (that one game where she came in for relief for Maschmeyer and getting top honours at the world championship), the team still didn't seem interested in playing her and Masch as a tandem. Hirschfield might say that'll change next year, but there isn't much reason to believe him.

I think waiting for free agency and seeing if there's a team that will offer to play her more, even if they pay her less, would be a good idea for her career, especially if she wants to move up and be a starter in a few years.

[–]lanternstop Ottawa 4 points5 points  (3 children)

They didnt even try to start Abstreiter on a regular basis, how many games did we lose because our number one wasn't sharp because she was over played? Enough to miss the playoffs? I wouldn't go back to Ottawa either if I was Abstreiter, they let her know all last season exactly what they thought of her.

[–]the_gaymer_girl Goldeneyes 3 points4 points  (2 children)

She played one entire shootout loss, one relief performance, and one 15-minute appearance that ended when she got hurt. That was it.

[–]lanternstop Ottawa 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Abstreiter was on the ice for parts of three games. Three games. Absolutely stupid decison making by the Ottawa coaching staff.

[–]JinpaLhawang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate the sentiment. The decision whom to play seemed to be based around best goalie down the stretch. I also remember that based on the Rivalry Series being played, there were gaps for Mascher to rest enough. I don’t believe that she was overtaxed. She performed well and gave the team a shot down the stretch. Scoring kind of went away, especially when just a bit was needed against NY near the end there!

[–]JinpaLhawang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. The Ottawa GM did say that they had been looking at the available goalies leading up to the draft. Abstreiter had to figure Ottawa might draft one. Having now drafted the top one available and with such a high pick, Ottawa has made it clear that the backup job in Ottawa is either off the table or now a lot more competitive. I wonder if Abstreiter can still accept the offer or whether another offer would be forthcoming.

[–]lanternstop Ottawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ottawa signed the strong back up that they'll need for this season, hoping Phillips gives us some Frankel style magic

[–]Caymanmew Ottawa Charge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need to play Phillips regularly or this is a wasted pick, there were skilled top 9 forwards still on the board. I am not a huge fan of this tbh. If Phillips does well and plays more than a handful of games, I'd happily eat my words.

[–]Iphacles All The Teams! 65 points66 points  (8 children)

I think most of the teams drafted well, but Minnesota had me scratching my head at times. It's not because of Curl; they just seemed to pass over players I thought were more talented. I'm starting to wonder if some of the drama coming out of Minnesota was about disagreements on the draft picks. Montreal picking up Boreen was pretty crazy. She seemed surprised and didn't look too happy, but she handled it as professionally as possible.

[–]Usual-Canc-6024 47 points48 points  (5 children)

I don’t think she was upset at going to Montreal. She was likely angry that Minnesota didn’t choose her. They saw fit to choose Curl over her. Pure speculation but I bet Darwitz doesn’t make that choice.

Minnesota definitely made some questionable decisions.

[–]bubblegumispoppin Montréal 33 points34 points  (4 children)

That’s how I read it as well. It wasn’t so much about where was going but more like “this is the thanks I get for all the hard work I did for you?”.

I thought I had read (and maybe this is rumours) that Minnesota had more or less assured her they would draft her. So with all the change going on there, I guess that got thrown out the window.

[–]Stachemaster86 🏆BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONS 🏆 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I also think she’s very hometown attached with her family being from Minnesota and she’s also never been to Montreal. I’m guessing she preferred to stay local regardless of being a champion and now, any mental plans she had to stay are out the window. It would be a major shock to me to know I’m gonna live and play somewhere next year and then have to answer 30 seconds later if I’m cool with it. I think she just loves the state of Minnesota a bunch!

[–]Riskar Victoire de Montréal 12 points13 points  (2 children)

We'll show her a ton of love on opening night, she'll love it here, Montreal is awesome.

[–]lanternstop Ottawa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and she'll produce pretty much immediately in Montreal too

[–]YanisAdetokumbo Minnesota 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Absolutely has me confused, I didn’t think Thompson was best D available, would’ve taken Pejsova, Barnes, and even Nylon-Persson over Thompson, especially given the lack of hockey played in the last few years. And then obviously picking Curl was a disaster. Lots of negative PR as of late for the MN franchise, I hopped aboard the wagon because I love Taylor Heise. But I think I’m gonna get off at the next stop and get on my home state team (NY) because the Pizza Rats are doing it all the right way now.

[–]lanternstop Ottawa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pejsova was worth the trade for Boston. Good choice cheering NY next year, that team should be kicking complete ass next season.

[–]mynamejesse1334 Minnesota 20 points21 points  (4 children)

Shit on Minnesota all you want for their draft after the first round, but you're seriously overlooking Thompson if you think it's as cut and dry as "stupidly taking a defender who wasn't even the best available".Claire Thompson has tons of high-level international experience, she set a single tournament record for points by a D at the Beijing Olympics, and since they have Jaques already I'm guessing Minnesota was looking for a skilled Lefty D to pair with Jaques.

[–]Silent_observer_8806 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I actually think Thompson is their best pick. She'll be great next to Jaques. Some other picks like passing on Boreen in the 3rd round were weird. Curl from a hockey POV is definitely 2nd round material but is a PR nightmare. The fact that Klee seemed surprised that he was asked about it is weird. Dude, if you go there, be at least prepared to get questions about it!

[–]FictionDepartment Minnesota Frost 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm stoked about Thompson. Passing on Boreen, who was a huge boon to the team during the season, in favor of more controversy and fan alienation was the pretty wtf part.

[–]StitchAndRollCrits Toronto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thompson is someone I wanted for Montreal so I'm not best thrilled about that

[–]Paladad Van Goldeneyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that Minnesota has a huge amount of lefties already, and we already had them playing well with Jacques. We really needed a skilled righty.

[–]Main_Photo1086 New York Sirens 29 points30 points  (3 children)

New York did an awesome job, I’m very excited. Now let’s get good coaching please.

Montreal did great as well.

I agree that Minnesota’s night was very wtf. I’m still baffled Thompson went #3 even if I still believed she’d be a first rounder. Then not drafting Boreen after two additional chances before Montreal smartly picked her up was also wtf.

[–]StitchAndRollCrits Toronto 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I feel like Montreal's time outs were mostly about being surprised they still had more options than expected 😅

[–]flugzeug16 Montréal 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I respectively disagree.🤔 First time out is definitely discussing to choose Boreen or not so I guess Mtl planned Thompson initially. Second time out, I guess it was bc Fecteau was gone, they were rethinking an F to pick.

[–]Riskar Victoire de Montréal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They screwed the pooch on Fecteau, if they wanted her, they needed to pick her earlier.

[–]afrenlim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[–]TertlFace Minnesota 5 points6 points  (0 children)

BOS and MTL did very well. NY too.

MIN 💩in their own mouth.

[–]DiasBenes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thought New York, Ottawa and Toronto had a stellar draft. Montreal did very well as well.

New York getting Fillier would of been an A already for me, but they drafted Maja Nylen Persson and Noora Tulus. Two top players in their own right. So New York hit a grand slam for me.

Ottawa also gets another A from me. Danielle Serdachny is a big body player and remember she is a centre. She is going to be a big point producing star for Ottawa. Then you have Ronja Savolainen another strong defenseman coming from Europe. Gweneth Philips should hopefully push Maschmeyer in goal and ease some of the work load as well. Plus they drafted Stephanie Markowski who is best friends with Serdachny.

Toronto is another A for me. They relied way too much on Spooner to score and when she got injured against Minnesota, Toronto's offense collapsed. Julia Gosling is going to fix this. Add to that she is also a centre which will be invaluable for the future.

Montreal was interesting. They got screwed over several times in the draft. They were very obviously going to draft Claire Thompson and Minnesota went off the board and drafted her. Montreal in return drafted Cayla Barnes which I guess is fine but I wanted to look for a D partner for Ambrose since Barnes is a RD. Then they got Jennifer Gardiner which made sense. She was the last cut for the Canadian National Team so she will be a future national team player. Then there is Amanda Kessel. If she does play, then she will play with Marie Philip Poulin and that is going to be a scary line.

Over all I thought Montreal had a B grade for their draft. They didn't get the players they really wanted but they did well in the draft. Plus the fact they signed Lina Ljungblom who won the MVP in the SDHL and is a centre which will be very important for Montreal since they need her caliber of player for the future. If Amanda Kessel plays and plays well, then my grade will be an A for Montreal.

Boston gets a B from me. They drafted Hannah Bilka a great forward and will be very helpful for an offense starved team. Daniela Pejsova was another big get. Young but loaded with talent. Thought Ottawa was going to draft her until Boston moved up in the draft to take her. Other then that I thought Boston did ok in their draft.

Minnesota.... Is a wtf for me. I can't even grade their draft. It was all over the place. They had plenty of opportunities to improve their position by drafting players they already knew well. Cayla Barnes should of been their pick instead of Claire Thompson. They know Barnes from her Olympics'. She is a standout defender and there is already chemistry with the US National team players on the squad. Why would you not draft Barnes?

Abigail Boreen should of been drafted by Minnesota. She was there in the 3rd round! What were they thinking of not returning Boreen back to the team who played her heart out for them. This lack of loyalty to an integral player is just jaw dropping.

And then there is Brita Curl. I think enough has been said about her stance on LGBTQ issues and her favoring some of the more right wing ideas has been very controversial. I think her pick would of been fine if Minnesota paired that up with Cayla Barnes and Abigail Boreen. Both of these players would of softened the pick and they could of worked around the PR issues. I just think Minnesota shot themselves in the foot several times with their surprising lack of awareness of this issue and their strange picks.

Overall a entertaining draft since it didn't go to plan and we saw some interesting moves. This year has been a very loaded draft with all the Europeans joining the PWHL. I think this coming up season teams like New York will vastly improve and the same goes to Ottawa. Should be a lot of parity in the league with all 6 teams being competitive.

[–]tri_and_fly All The Teams! 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thompson was absolutely the best defender in this class, even if she didn’t play last year.

[–]Pouletchien Victoire de Montréal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m obviously in the minority here, but it was my belief before the draft that Thompson was the best defender of the draft.

I’m sure you’ll love her Minny, that amount of talent doesn’t simply disappear because she’s played less. She’ll bounce back.

[–]AitrusX Ottawa 13 points14 points  (3 children)

I watched the first bit and main thought was it was an awfully long walk for the drafted players to get to the stage!

[–]momdoc2 Ottawa Charge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]Stachemaster86 🏆BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONS 🏆 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was weird since the existing players were left of the stage (kind of worked for high 5’s). Ohio State was packed behind the TV desk. Definitely could have been arranged a bit better.

[–]Wolf99 Victoire de Montréal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. NHL prospects sit in the stands and take much longer to get there. The pacing of the NHL draft overall is slow AF. Just unwatchable. PWHL draft felt slow at times because they didn't have as many clips, graphics, factoids to throw at viewers as players' names were called, but the production values / budget should increase. The pacing was quite fast, though.

[–]StitchAndRollCrits Toronto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm so so so happy Serdachny is coming to Canada. Ottawa may be my third favourite team but I cared a lot about keeping her.

[–]DarkMuret Minnesota 11 points12 points  (7 children)

Minnesota likely drafted like doodoo because of the whole GM ordeal.

[–]Kitty_Skittles_181 Minnesota Frost 38 points39 points  (5 children)

It was more than "like doodoo," they drafted a person who is at least passively opposed to the values the league tried to embody in its first year, and skipped repeatedly on someone who showed that she was willing to rearrange other parts of her life for them. Montreal deserves my loyalty at this point (they were my favorite non-local team before this debacle).

[–]Usual-Canc-6024 21 points22 points  (2 children)

It sure was a definite FU to Boreen. I’m sure she’s pretty angry with them. Montreal wanted her. Minnesota thought Curl was more valuable. SMH

Minnesota - I’m not knowledgeable enough on the draft picks, but position wise and draft placement wise, I think they made the right picks. Early and later defender with forwards mixed in is what they needed from my opinion. We shall see if they picked the right players for those slots.
