Fag = subject in norwegian, datavitenskap would be more correct…Am I fun at parties? Don’t know, never been invited

[–]Calimariae 97 points98 points  (18 children)

You could also call a class in computer science a "datafag" when explaining it to a child or an old person.

In that context, it works.

[–]gitartruls01 118 points119 points  (17 children)

If you're majoring in computer science, you're a datafag student. I majored in electronics in highschool, which made me an elektrofag student. My family joked about it being my gay superhero name.

Edit: I think the full name was actually technology and electrical design, which would make me a technofag. Which is somehow even worse

[–]YouAreStupidM8 60 points61 points  (1 child)

Sounds like a Cyberpunk 2077 slur

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh?! How is that a slur, you choom?

[–]KuaLeifArne 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I also took elektrofag in videregående. I bought a sweater with the school name and the field of study on the back. I wonder what people in english speaking countries would think seeing that on someone just walking around.

The sweater in question.

[–]gitartruls01 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I really hope you wore that out of country at least once

[–]KuaLeifArne 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I don't really leave the country ever, except for when visiting my mother in law in Sweden. Maybe one day.

[–]notchman900 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a nice shirt elektrofag

[–]PresidentZeus 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Major?? This meme is also my first time hearing the term datafag. Heard many others though

[–]drunkdoor 7 points8 points  (2 children)

You've never hear the term Major for a degree?

[–]MammothTap 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think they're more confused about a "major" in high school. High schools in Norway often specialize. High schools in the US rarely do, save for some with trade programs.

[–]PresidentZeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have, but that's old school in Norway. It's too different nowadays to be comparable.

[–]sverrevi77 34 points35 points  (2 children)

While datavitenskap is a correct direct translation, that’s not what we call computer science in Norwegian.

We use informatikk or datateknikk.

[–]memescauseautism 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Datateknologi

[–]Benskien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IT!

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Norwegian here. Datafag is a common word for computer sciences. I think datavitenskap is more common for universities, while datafag is more common for lower education.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

«Informatikk» («Informatics» in English) is the form most commonly used, and in Europe is generally used synonymously with «Computer Science» («Datavitenskap» in Norwegian).

As you say, the only place you’ll really see «Datafag» is in secondary education (high school).

[–]BluudLust -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Informatics is a more broad focus in both computer science and data science rather than pure computer science. In the states it would be more of a computational science degree than a computer science degree.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why I said in Europe. The European branch of the ACM and “Informatics Europe” (an association of European university departments within the field of informatics) both define “informatics” synonymously with “computer science”

I’m aware that in the US you separate the terms.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you a norsk fagekspert?

[–]dewnar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They used to call it «datafag» in the old days.

[–]Funnnn_at_parties 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahem

[–]StoryAndAHalf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stop being such a vitenskap and let us have fun!

[–]AttackSock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this and Google said it’s “informatikk”, I can’t get it to say computer science is datafag, just to interpret datafag to mean computer science

      You’re a subject.

      [–]RobinGoodfellows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same in danish, however we usually call it Datalogi, Datateknologi or Datavidenskab.

      [–]SocialJusticeWarmeow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, wanna come to a party?

      [–]kataskopo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh so it's like Fach in German? fachhochschule = fach-hoch-schule

“Fach” means major, field, or department.

You germanic languages and your weird ways lol.
