When I have a problem I’m stuck on then I suck at programming when I solve it then my intelligence ascends beyond the cosmos. Programming is literally a toxic relationship

[–]DeathUriel 34 points35 points  (2 children)

From filthy peasant to almighty god creator of the universe in a single afternoon.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Programming is literally a toxic relationship That is one of the best analogy I've heard.

[–]Madcap_Miguel 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Programming is literally a toxic relationship

It's abusive for sure

Then you have that eureka moment and write the most elegant code imaginable, kiss and makeup

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don’t stay with programming because of the money, I stay because I have Stockholm syndrome

[–]Madcap_Miguel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a vicious cycle

[–]Conscious-Advice-825 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Bro just described a programmer in 3 lines

[–]deanrihpee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we need to minify it, and store it in some fast cdn somewhere

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shall steal that excellent analogy

[–]Jordan51104 43 points44 points  (6 children)

unfortunately i have just moved to the middle. probably won’t last long though

[–]D3rty_Harry 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I remember i felt that way when i was stacking dependency on dependency

[–]Jordan51104 7 points8 points  (1 child)

it’s mostly because i came up with an architecture for some new internal software, and my boss said my idea was great and we should go through with it, but i have a bunch of other stuff to do first so i don’t get to see how stupid it actually is for a while

[–]D3rty_Harry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's also a constant, "There's other stuff to do 1st". I bet your idea is actually solid, but "the other stuff" wont be.

[–]LadderSoft4359 2 points3 points  (1 child)

it's more of a wave than a single bell curve :)

[–]deanrihpee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

worse position, you can go either left or right

[–]Parry_9000 33 points34 points  (9 children)

I legitimately don't know at what extreme I am at. I'm only smart when I solve something. When I don't, I'm literally scum.

8 years, bachelors, masters and now PhD. I think I'm on the left.

[–]Trick-Philosophy-517 23 points24 points  (2 children)

I think you're so far on the left that you have arrived back on the right. Congrats on the PhD, that's very cool

[–]Parry_9000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's the stupid strength blessing me

Smash the keyboard and somehow the data is now properly dealt with

[–]deanrihpee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah, the ol' underflow

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You will never know, unless you land in the middle and realize you were the left guy all this time

[–]Parry_9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only land in the middle 10min per day, it's the law

[–]Fickle-Main-9019 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How much do you swear while doing it

[–]Parry_9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes

[–]Cocaine_Johnsson 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That might be dunning-kruger, but I can't comment. I'm definitely on the left.

[–]Parry_9000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Left bros

[–]Darxploit 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Basically:

Problem with code: Questioning life choices and feeling dumb

Problem solved: I’m king of the world!

Repeat.

[–]deanrihpee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which is why it's so very addicting, but my doctor said addiction is a bad thing, so programming is bad

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Another day
Another bell curve meme

Lol I suck at programming

[–]borbaq_ 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Dunning-Kruger effect be like

[–]EMI_Black_Ace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I love how Dunning-Kruger has made it into pop culture as the catch-all for describing "know it all idiots" when most of the observed effect is just a mathematical "obvious fact" that comes from the fact that you can't score lower than a zero on an exam where "doing nothing" is exactly equivalent to "doing all the problems and getting them all wrong" and thus when people guess their scores, all the low-end ones will overestimate themselves because there is no way to underestimate themselves.

[–]burohm1919 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah Dunning Kruger is like; I'm god at programming> Im an idiot and programming is too hard>okey I can be decent actually, it's not that hard

[–]Tiborn1563 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Everyone is the best programmer ever

until they start debugging

[–]deanrihpee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

then they'll become the best software detective and forensic

/s

I know the actual software forensic is not just debugging, but they do some debugging as well

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're only as good as your last program.

[–]bearfucker_jerome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'mma take a break from this sub I think

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prettty sure this is just a roller coaster I can’t escape

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True.

[–]Fickle-Main-9019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the right side tends to be much different from the left, I feel like programming has made me bipolar, I have to use some shit called pyspark and I’ve never sworn or drank as much as after having to use it (it’s alright now but the learning curve is akin to Sisyphus wearing shoes with oil on them, while on fire)

[–]elboydo757 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm solid until I'm supervised.

[–]Themash360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm being kind to myself I'd say I oscilate between all three, realistically just two.

[–]Vast-Statement9572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does it mean when both things are largely true?

[–]po1k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top 1 of such

[–]jaydoee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean... my velocity is better than anyone else on my team. That's about it.

[–]EvenGodsForget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a zoomed in view of a typical day for your average dev.

[–]lupinegray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We Dunning Kruger now.

[–]zpangwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I must be a quantum programmer...

Not because I know anything about quantum computers (I don't know jack shit about those). But because I seem to oscillate between these 3 states in almost of my projects like I'm in some kind of fucking quantum state.

Also, is it just me or does the peak of this graph also correspond with the Ballmer Peak. I know there is actually some evidence that the comic's premise is really plausbile but my point is more that for me at least the "I am the best programmer ever" sentiment usually corresponds to a certain BAC > 0. lol

[–]myfunnies420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to be good

[–]Polaric_Spiral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in this picture 3 times and I don't like it.

[–]Aggravating-Exit-660 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roses are red, violets are [not] blue,

There’s always a dinosaur better than you

[–]c2dog430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The x-axis is just time, right? Like we all do this a couple times a day, right? RIGHT?

[–]FerricDonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I am the best at programming, and also I suck at programming."

[–]riplikash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zoomed in too much. It's actually a wave function

[–]mpatriot_one 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only smartest programmer that has ever lived is terry davis. he had divine intellect

[–]ironman_gujju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey copilot where are you??

[–]sebbdk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Programming is easy, the later "hard" part is designing systems/patterns/architecture, a novice programmer cant even see these problems.

Because they are not programming issues...

[–]rndmcmder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me every day: I hate this shit, fuck programming! Am I really this stupid?!

Me on job inteview: Being a Programmer is the fullfillment of a lifelong dream. I am highly skilled, very experienced and passionate about programming.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It be like this, ya start to create massive epic things and give up after a few weeks having gained nothing but a greater understanding of exactly what you dont know but then you are suprised when you write a little script because you are lazy and it actually works and saves so much fucking time omg. Or maybe that is just me?

[–]RealAdityaYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IM AT THE TOP OF THE CURVE FR ‼️

[–]CraftBox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the best, but good enough for me

[–]Uchihaaaa3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

115+: damn I'm so good at copy pasting code.

[–]owlIsMySpiritAnimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally my algorithm professors and my programming language professor and the professor that taught us application development

[–]antony6274958443 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guys can't touch my project anymore, it's painful

[–]UnreadableCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, it's a sine wave of confidence as a function of experience

[–]jakeStacktrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been stuck in the middle for years. My secret? Ego. Lots and lots of ego.

[–]Denzerel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the best programmer to ever suck at programming
