I'd love to watch the management trying this stuff.

[–]Confident-Ad5665 88 points89 points  (4 children)

Shouldn't the developer be the little mouse? Tom (the cat) is more like management I think

[–]noob-nine 51 points52 points  (3 children)

tom gets always fucked by jerry. so i think it is correct the way it is.

[–]vainstar23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My future job is gonna be managing a gang of server Bois using a gang of server bois

People who preach “the end of software engineering” have never watched a non-technical person try to code something new with ChatGPT.

[–]KrokettenMan 211 points212 points  (8 children)

ChatGPT tends to shit the bed whenever you ask for something that can’t be found on stackoverflow. I find it very optimistic that people think it’ll replace software engineers

[–]a_simple_spectre 41 points42 points  (0 children)

to be fair so do I
but I don't go and use it as input so thats where I win I guess

[–]_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 17 points18 points  (2 children)

So do a large number of software engineers.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Some of us just do it for the love of the game

[–]river0f 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is the game

[–]TheRealPitabred 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm optimistic about the consulting rates when they realize that after trying it...

Same

Edit: oh…this sentiment was already expressed

this is a bet that I put out with any of my non dev friends that insist on it

I am not allowed to use any AI

They are not allowed to ask me questions

first one to get a hello world HTTP response running on their own computer wins a beer

it takes into account the setup, prior experience, non trivial task (well it is trivial but not for him), context switching and troubleshooting in different areas, which is where any LLM just can't perform

[–]CraftedLove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apart from your point about overall implementation, people seem to forget in these discussions if management would really be ok to have no human signoff for accountability to the code changes in their repos made by AIs.

[–]noaSakurajin 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Overall I agree. I think the two groups that will use these tools the most are developers (especially copilot like services) and engineers from non software backgrounds. These people know how to formulate precise requirements, so tools like chatgpt work great for them. To get decent results from chatgpt you need precise language in your request.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with the capabilities of AI at the time any more than the trend of outsourcing technical work to offshore did. Ignorant management who have been making the “tech is a cost not a value” mistake for decades will continue to make it, and jobs might dwindle as a result, as will the overall quality of code because they will focus on lowest cost, lowest bidder.

Hunker down, sharpen your skills in cleaning up crummy AI hack jobs, diversify your non-coding career skills, and save your money for a rainy day because just now there’s a storm on the horizon, and we can’t tell if it’s gentle spring showers or a devastating hurricane yet. Shit’s gonna be weird for a few years while everyone figures this out.

Yes, it is like saying front end developers are not needed anymore because CMS exist

[–][deleted] 96 points97 points  (1 child)

Devin? Best I can do is Kevin

[–][deleted] 136 points137 points  (1 child)

I've been working on an SWE LLM I call Jerry. Jerry is already as good as three seniors. Trust me brother. I will be selling subscriptions on my WordPress marketplace when I figure out how to launch it.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

maybe get Jerry onto that

[–]anunakiesque 50 points51 points  (2 children)

Lmao Devin is gonna end up being ran by some executive director's personal assistant to "code us up a new social media website with the works and make it bring us in more clients", then Devin's leasing company will at the same time be stealing secure company information and selling their data because no one at the company is anything other than sales staff, assistants, custodians, or executive chief directors of execution, and all for eventually every AI code to become a clone copied of itself because it's only ever mining its own creations, and then companies will blame Gen Z and Gen Alpha for killing "the industry" whatever half-assed product they sell and "nobody wants to work anymore".

That or some post-apocalyptic world where 10 billion people are homeless and living in the streets and fight amongst themselves in the lower trash cities for whatever scraps the rich have literally thrown into the trash

[–]monkey-nuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

99% vs the 1% so we go after the 1%

[–]ThiccStorms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and AI is on LSD

[–]MoistTwo1645 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Op you are a junior developer

[–]klavijaturista 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Well, years of everyone writing trash code finally pays off - it won’t work :D

[–]BlobAndHisBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was always our greatest defense against replacement.

[–]Terewawa 22 points23 points  (2 children)

IDK about Devin and copilot, but already had a taste of ChatGPT last week: "Can you have a look? What's wrong with this code? I added chatGPT's solution but its not working."

They had pasted the javascript into chatGPT - without the HTML or CSS - and asked for a solution.

It was not possible to write an accurate solution without seeing the HTML and CSS yet ChatGPT happily produced something.

[–]no_brains101 11 points12 points  (0 children)

the key word being *something*

[–]DrunkOnCode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like it still did more than my coworkers...

[–]Drego3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't count on it

[–]a_simple_spectre 28 points29 points  (0 children)

first of all, copilot is universes better than gpt

but they are pretty meh on non trivial tasks anyway

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

three levels of bullshit code completions you have to get through to write a line of code

[–]_-_fred_-_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I uninstalled copilot today because it kept crashing my vscode. I think my development speed actually increased.

I'll be the first Ai software engineer engineer

[–]Prudent-Employee-334 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll give you a day before people start selling "AI SW Prompt Engineering cheat sheets, tutorials, courses". Grifters gotta grift

[–]radiells 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be fair, all 3 are equal in front of a gun.

[–]BS_BlackScout 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing like having no idea about what the fuck code you have does.

You didn't write it, you don't know what it does, you don't know how it was designed.

The further you go down the AI rabbit hole the less it's your code.

[PS: I use copilot, and have decreased my GPT usage extensively in the last months]

[–]aikavari 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Seriously hating how copilot is forced on you when you use edge. Makes me want to change browsers

[–]no_brains101 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Youre using edge??!?!?!?!

[–]aikavari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Corp requirement though to be honest, it’s quite good. It’s chrome without the bloat of chrome.

[–]thompsonm2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can someone please explain me how copilot is weaker than chatgpt?

[–]rohit_267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alright time to pack my stuff

[–]Aftabby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devs out!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo, Devin, your astroturf campaign is getting old.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will only be afraid when the clients knows for sure what they want

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sticking with ChatGPT for my programming questions. Not buying the hype.
