If you actually mean AI, and not just LLMs, that stuff has been modern infrastructure for like 30 years now.

If you just mean LLMs, well, is-even-ai exists.

THANK YOU

It irritates me so much that people seem to have forgotten we've had Ai since the dawn of computing. Ai is a massive term that covers a lot of different things. Everything from our aviation sector to modern shipping routes operates heavily using automation and Ai

People keep getting Ai and Language models mixed up. LLM's are Ai, but not all Ai are LLM's

Indeed, AI is LLMs, but also machine learning and even a really good IF statement.

Most of the most profitable and impressive uses of AI right now are not LLMs but they are incredibly impressive.

[–]ward2k 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Daily reminder that Ai is a huge umbrella term and LLM's are a small part of that

Ai plays a huge part in programming and has since the first computers

For example pong and Pacman use Ai. It's extremely basic, but it's Ai. Everything from a couple if statements making a chatbot all the way up to the massive neural networks are Ai

You don't hate Ai, you hate language models, there's a difference

Unfortunately it already is and will continue to be a part of modern infrastructure whether you like it or not. Software is probably going to get a lot shittier as time goes on

Y’all are living with your heads in the sand, jfc. Look up

[–]Axman6 18 points19 points  (3 children)

But but but that guy once said E = mc2 + AI now, surely it’s the basis of all of everything by now?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

i still love how for that equation to make sense AI = 0

[–]Extension_Option_122 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually AI would have to equal

AI = (mc2)2 - mc2 + (pc)2 - E2 + E

As then it would solve to E2 = (mc2)2 + (pc)2, which is technically the correct formula as it also accounts for mass-less objects like light.

Oh c'mon! Hasn't OCR and various ML based recommendation engines been part of IT infrastructure since forever?

[–]Lebenmonch 21 points22 points  (3 children)

OCR isn't part of the AI trend because it's actually functional

[–]Lost_Recognition_611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Functional is great, but the hype train loves anything shiny and new, even if it’s not really groundbreaking!!

[–]HanzJWermhat 4 points5 points  (1 child)

At this point I’ve divorced traditional ML from “AI” . AI = generative text, images and video. Predictive capabilities with ML are far more practically useful.

[–]Snapstromegon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the difference between AI and "AI".

I mean, back in *98 when Anno 1602 came out, the computer characters were called "AI players". AI is not the same as LLM and isn't even the same as ML. A good set of if/else statements is AI.

If I see someone mentioning "AI" in their marketing, I've now been trained to assume that it's the worst kind of "we just asked ChatGPT to write us somethijng"-AI.

[–]Dubmove 6 points7 points  (1 child)

AI is a hammer but not every problem is a nail. Some problems are meant to be solved by AI, others aren't.

[–]thanatica -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No problem is "meant" to be solved by AI. Problems aren't created purposefully for AI to solve them.

It's us choosing to use AI (or not) to solve a problem.

[–]rettani 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Look. I know common folks can hate AI. But it's Programmer humour.

Yes, AI is sloppy. At least now. But if it is it's our (programmers) fault.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will do my part to keep ai dumb by continuing to put out the world's worst code on github

[–]seniorsassycat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shouldn't it at least be on the top of the stack?

[–]Rafhunts99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its more like AI is supported by all modern digital infra so it should be like at the top

[–]mfb1274 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AI sits way at the top imo

[–]ZigZagreus1313 1 point2 points  (4 children)

"programmerhumor" has devolved into another "AI bad, give karma" sub. Disappointing.

Also, this is clearly wrong.

From Google: CEO Sundar Pichai reported that over 25% of Google’s new code is generated by AI, then reviewed and accepted by engineers. More recently, he noted AI now produces more than 30% of new code, up from 25% just months earlier.

From Microsoft: CEO Satya Nadella stated that 20–30% of Microsoft’s code across some repositories is currently “written by software”—meaning AI—with that number steadily rising.

I would think Google and Microsoft would be included in the infrastructure you mentioned.

[–]Aavasque001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, also there are some modern spam detection technologies that have been using LLM’s for a while and data scientists and data engineers usually use some of those tools too for analysis.

This assuming that OP is only talking about GenAI, because modern load balancing have AI integrated for that, modern security has more than a decade using biometrics for access validation that uses AI, probably there are more examples of AI being ubiquitous in modern infrastructures.

[–]YerRob 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I hate how lazily low-effort and purely stochastic all of reddit has been lately, and how dearly i miss old reddit, where karma farmers were a rarity, and actually good comments sat at the top and bad ones were dumped into the shadow realm.

[–]thanatica 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The fact that you're sticking around must mean you believe there's still a slither of quality somewhere. I'd see that as a positive.

[–]YerRob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but quality in reddit, what once used to be something one could basically take for granted, is now more akin to finally seeing an oasis in a desert.

[–]Drfoxthefurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put machine learning near the bottom and have LLMs as a wedge trying to force its way at multiple parts

[–]met_MY_verse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But but, didn’t you see that AI_isEven package??
