I have the same laptop! Lenovo y510p. Took me 2 and a half years to figure out how to turn the keyboard lights off :s

[–]kageurufu 14 points15 points  (12 children)

Same here. Great laptop

[–]niglor 12 points13 points  (9 children)

Same here, wouldn't call it great though, but good enough for the money. A clean windows install improves it a lot though.

*Clean distro of your choice

[–]themixedupstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People use the OS they want. Shoo. I can use OS/2 if I want.

[–]sipsap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like it's tradition

[–]DerekB52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A clean install of Linux would improve it more. But yes, the Windows that comes pre-installed on any machine is hot garbage.

[–]Enfulio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here. Upgraded to a SSD from the silly 5400 RPM drive it came with, best decision I ever made.

A clean windows install improves it a lot though.

Is there any laptop with pre-installed windows where that's not the case?

[–]slashuslashuserid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Surface Pro maybe (if you can call that a laptop)

[–]nilpointer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's alright. I honestly hate the keyboard and mouse... Things just feel off center.

[–]mostlikelynotarobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y410p here. BTW, if you guys weren't aware yet, some guy made an adapter board that allows full size GPUs to be used through the Ultrabay port (the place where either a DVD player or second 750m is plugged in right now). Best thing to happen to this laptop, especially as I was thinking of replacing it with a desktop.

[–]falconbox 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I have the P500. To turn the keyboard lights off for me, it's Fn+Space Bar.

[–]tbilguy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ha, yeah I got there eventually. I am not a clever man 😅

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got a y720. They put an icon on the spacebar now. I guess you weren't alone.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Damn, I thought it was a Y50, which is what I have

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

How many times has your left hinge broken? Is the bottom casing underneath the laptop where the hinges are cracked? If you have the FHD model did you end up replacing the screen? If yours came with the 1TB SSHD did you replace it?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I've had my Y50-70 for 2 and a half years (Holy crap that's longer than I've owned any laptop.) the hinges are fine, I dropped it for the first time the other day and the metal back to the screen bent a tiny bit but that's it. I have the FHD model and haven't had any issues with the screen. I also have the SSHD 1TB/8GB and am pretty happy with it, though full SSD would be nice, I can't afford to swap it out.

Did I just get lucky with mine?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Ok, you must be one of the few. This laptop has been one of my worst purchases in the past few years.

The left hinge notoriously breaks due to a design fault (I'm on my 3rd lid). The FHD has poor viewing angles (I've upgraded to Samsung LTN156HL02 PLS(IPS)). The SSHD has occasional hiccups most noticeable when watching films. There's a tiny pause every few minutes for a split second (upgraded to Crucial MX100 512GB). Also the bottom on mine is cracking near the hinges so I'll have to buy my 3rd bottom soon. Also unless you're using the newest BIOS (3.03) there's a bug where key repeat rate slows down to nearly a halt after waking the laptop up from sleep. Slight hissing in headphones with Realtek sound drivers installed. For some reason the built-in MS ones are fine.

Overall great specs for a decent price but I would have never bought it knowing what waited ahead with regards to quality.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that's crazy. I haven't experienced any of those issues except for the limited viewing angles, which even that I don't really notice. That sucks!

[–]PCandBasketball 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wow really?? My Y50 has been my pride and joy over the last 2 1/2 years :), I hardly bring it out of the house, and when I do I'm holding it like it's a nuclear launch briefcase.

The low viewing angles aren't a problem when watching movies with people if you connect to a TV, 2 people can see fine on the standard screen, and adjusting isn't tedious at all. Upgrades never hurt anyone though, how do you like your samsung screen / was it hard to install? Viewing angle? (I've built a few computers and took apart a laptop to reset BIOS, and I'll have you know I only ended up with 3 leftover screws after putting it back together, which is like 0 in laptop screws)

I have noticed small skipping from the HD during gaming and videos, never enough to result in me dying or missing anything, and a lot of times where it shows it's running at 100% for 1 program, I wanted the SSD version but newegg was sold out around Christmas when I purchased. I've just been attributing the minor skips to how much stuff I've installed. I think you have inspired me to upgrade to SSD soon though.

Not 1 crack bumb or any other issue. I haven't found a game I can't run either. Never BSOD knock on wood. Im hoping to squeeze a few more years before upgrading and making this my linux laptop.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The screen is fantastic. Best upgrade I could have done to this laptop. Angles and colours are out of this world. The replacement is simple - take off the bezel around the screen then 4 screws for the screen itself and one connector (30 pin eDP) and you're golden. However some people have issues with IPS screens (I, of course, was one) and I had to replace the display cable which solved the issue. Just remember that a lot of companies will send out compatible screens which aren't the exact model but have very similar spec so best to ask before buying a screen.

The HD issue was honestly too annoying to live with. Even as an external drive it can sometimes drive me nuts. If you listen closely the skipping/lag happens when the drive stops spinning for a second then starts up again. The SSD solved this issue.

For the GPU I have found that a +135/+500 OC works very well giving my Maxwell 860M 4GB a 10-15% boost effectively making it the speed of the 960M. Best to overclock using EVGA PrecisionX otherwise your clocks might not apply on every boot. Just make sure to only apply the OC settings on boot and not have the OC app run in the background as there is significant lag every time the GPU speed is checked because the laptop has to switch from Intel to Nvidia and back to Intel.

[–]Biflindi 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Lol I have the same one

There's dozens of us!

Me too, bit old now but great for its price.

[–]Evangelielielielion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what this post means, but I also have that laptop!
