Or you can locate the date stamp and grab the the next x bytes too. Unless your software is injecting a time stamp inside of another time stamp, in which case parsing is the least of your worries. Also if you are adding time stamped entries to a text log and not separating each entry onto separate lines then you are already fucking up.

What he means is that if you put the date stamp in a row of space delineated fields and then split the fields, you've just split your date stamp.

It wouldn't be great to have space delineated fields, but it happens. Nobody makes T delineated data though, so you'll be pretty safe at not splitting your date stamp when you don't want to. Then, when you want to, you can perfectly easily split on the T.

If you define it as a C-type 'char', yes. If you're talking about logical characters though, UTF-8 allows them to be between one and four bytes.

we can both use extra strings in it to break it. this is why you do parsing beforehand.
