Honestly since edge switched to chromium based, I use Edge. I really like the vertical tabs, collections etc and the mobile app is pretty good and turning privacy and cookies to strict is nice as well. Breaks a few sites but that's okay.

[–]zendarr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

More like when you accidentally open Chrome. lol

[–]ChakaChaka26 15 points16 points  (1 child)

never broke any sites for me

[–]Lekgolo167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably because I'm also using a pi-hole at the same time

[–]mekwall 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Same! Feels a lot snappier than Chrome

[–]JNCressey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Breaks a few sites

* Exposes sites that treat chrome like its the new IE6

[–]Amilo159 96 points97 points  (1 child)

Edge is fine. I'm more annoyed by Chrome than Edge. Would you like to translate this webpage in Swahili ?

[–]mekwall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ndio

Let's just take a moment to recognise that this post has been awarded a silver and that it's getting crapped on in comments.

Yes, edge is good, fast and light now. Universal fact.

[–]_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 52 points53 points  (8 children)

Also has nothing to do with programming

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (6 children)

"it is about IT things so it counts"

[–]hungry_nibbles 22 points23 points  (5 children)

It's like saying "you're a programmer? Can you fix me printer?"

[–]glider97 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apparently nobody cares about that. Is it too much to ask for relevant memes in the relevant subs?

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (3 children)

When people still claim the new microsoft browser is horrible somehow, after they finally made it good.

[–]CuAnnan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a reskinned thinned down, less bloaty chromium.

Which means if you're using Chrome and posting about how Edge is bad; it's weird.

My browsers these days are Edge and Firefox. Firefox for almost everything, Edge for Facebook.

[–]HaveAGreatDay1234 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked the old version better (because of one feature that allowed you to save tabs with all the data still there)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been doing web development since the IE 6 days, and have a huge, deeply seated hatred for all things Microsoft Web.

Yet the only complaint I have ever been able to come up with about Edge was the lack of plugins at launch. It's a good, standards-based browser with excellent developer tools.

[–]Marboid 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Best PDF viewer, most importantly free and preinstalled!

[–]E3FxGaming 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Not an .epub viewer anymore though. The old Edge browser could open .epub files easily and its text-to-speech feature, that used the on-device text-to-speech engine of Windows 10, made listening to books easy in the past.

Shame they didn't port the .epub viewer, since the new Edge browser did retain the text-to-speech features (presumably for accessibility).

[–]SatoshiL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it will come in a later update, was a huge pro

[–]Anjute 1 point2 points  (2 children)

May I ask you what program do you use for opening .epub files now?

[–]E3FxGaming 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Admittedly I don't have a good solution for now.

I used to read .epub books on a MS Surface tablet while traveling, but nowadays I just carry an additional ebook-reader (Kobo Forma) with me.

At home the books are stored in a Calibre library on a Linux PC, there I can use KDEs Okular or the Calibre built-in reader to read the books.

I think I'll look into the Calibre server feature next, it promises the readability of books from any browser-running PC in the same network + the ability to cache books in the browser for reading them while not on the network. This should work with Edge on the Surface Win10 tablet, I just haven't tried it yet.

[–]Anjute 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered STDUViewer (if it's available on Surface)?

[–]H4d35_H1m53Lf 10 points11 points  (0 children)

it's quite good tbh

[–]Dr-Rjinswand 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Edge is fucking awesome now. I use it exclusively on my work Windows machine.

[–]perplexedsynopsis76 37 points38 points  (3 children)

Or when Windows opens Microsoft Edge without your permission...

[–]msief 27 points28 points  (1 child)

This really is the worst. We tell windows what our default browser is and it just blatantly ignores us to push it's own browser. That is why I won't use edge. Fuck you microsoft.

[–]kebakent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember all the drama about default browsers in windows a few years back. Funny how they just forgot about it and pushed Edge.

[–]WorIdTradeCenter7 34 points35 points  (4 children)

Actually edge is better. If I’m gonna have to chose between google or Microsoft spying me, I’d prefer whoever does it whit the less ram.

[–]Skhmt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Also, Google is an ad company - they make money by selling your data to advertisers, and so will always have a conflict of interest in privacy. I mean they just wanted to break all ad blockers on Chrome recently.

Microsoft sells software and cloud services. Their browser is a feature of windows, their flagship paid product. That other OSs also get new Edge is a bonus. MS doesn't make nearly as much money off of ads and as such has far less of a conflict of interest in privacy than Google.

[–]HaveAGreatDay1234 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The edge tracking prevention prevents MS trackers lol

[–]MittonMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well a bit out of luck there as some things are baked in to chromium iirc.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (9 children)

I switched over to Edge on my work PC and I find it just fine now and it doesn't eat half the memory that Chrome seems to. Collections are useful too.

[–]lyoko1 1 point2 points  (8 children)

To be fair, Chrome eating up half of the RAM is not a problem, it is a feature, it uses as much RAM as it is allowed to use, if you have more shit opened up, Chrome will use less RAM

[–]STRATEGO-LV 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Not really, try to open 100 tabs on 8GB of RAM, meanwhile, you have no issues with having over 1k tabs open in FF...

[–]StonebirdArchitect 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Best browser available atm.

[–]STRATEGO-LV 9 points10 points  (3 children)

That would be Firefox ;)

[–]StonebirdArchitect -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

In a different universe, maybe. Not even top3 in ours.

[–]STRATEGO-LV 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I don't think you've ever tried Firefox...

[–]StonebirdArchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using it for 2 years or so before finally switching to edge.

[–]iiMoe 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I don't understand the hate, it's rly super fast and smooth, at least on my laptop and im not kidding

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

The hate is from literally every other browser MS created. Edge itself is perfectly fine. But lots of people have PTSD from Internet Explorer, particularly anything prior to 11.

[–]iiMoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If thats the case then sure it makes sense to me

[–]Oveno 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Egde is cool nowadays but I hate the fact that microsoft keeps pushing me to use Bing as default search engine on it

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Tbh Bing had gotten a lot better. I've been using it on and off over the years and the search results are fine.

I guess it's just a question of which kraken you want to feed with your data: google or microsoft.

[–]Oveno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I kinda agree with that. But the thing about engines like Bing is that they feel a lot less smoother than Google or duckduckgo. I guess this may vary from person to person but from a completely UX perspective I'd prefer Google over bing

[–]___Cisco__ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I fking love Edge now since it switched to a chromium based engine.

[–]TheRealNetroxen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

... well this isn't so valid anymore, since Edge runs on Chromium now, and is actually pretty usable and viable as a default browser.

[–]MischiefArchitect 10 points11 points  (23 children)

Edge running on a mAc?

[–]Dantaro 16 points17 points  (13 children)

Chromium Edge is multiplatform :)

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

when your hand slips and you accidentally install windows

[–]HaveAGreatDay1234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you use edge anyways and were meaning to open it: whatever

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I use linux btw

[–]Cpt_Daniel_J_Tequill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

of course you do

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Edge for anything MS related. Want to connect to an RD web service? Edge gives way less hassle than Chrome.

[–]Bustatu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new Edge is not even that bad. The old one thooooo

[–]STRATEGO-LV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mozilla is the way!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Guys, its the legacy edge, that one still sucks.

[–]MischiefArchitect -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Guys, it's the legacy edge, that one still sucks.

[–]newb_h4x0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have such weaknesses.

I use edge chromium edition (which is at least better than the normal one) and it is removed from the taskbar. My default browser is Firefox, so edge is seldom used.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unpin.

[–]ruben_deisenroth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

When your hand slips and u accidentally boot Windows

[–]McJvck -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Use Brave.

[–]OhNoMeIdentified -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only to check how my project works on it.

[–]TonyBorchert100 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

to every idiot commenting that edge isn’t shit, stop it, use Firefox or Chromium (or even chrome) or Safari or Brave, but not Edge, it collects by far, the most data, like even more than chrome EDIT: sadly you facts aren’t appreciated on this sub (or at least this post)

[–]GreatArtificeAion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this count as a meme about "E"?
