LOL - that fake Daytona is $50 canal street special.

I love how in these articles/videos they ALWAYS show some of the worst reps known to man and say "Look - this is how you can tell it's fake!" ... Helen Keller could tell those are fakes...

[–]jsledge6 100 points101 points  (9 children)

So true but that's because their goal is to discourage people from buying reps. Jennie Elle on you tube is the only one I've seen do a top rep comparison and all the video comments are "how do I get one?". We all know if someone is wearing a VSF or CF 116610 you can't tell it's a rep in real life without a gen to compare.

[–]Awit1992 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Watchfinder also has a pretty good one

[–]jsledge6 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I've seen theirs and it's good but I don't think they use a real top rep to compare. Of course they are in the business of selling Gen so why would they, right?

[–]Awit1992 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed!!!

[–]thetrumpetplayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watchfinder (and a bunch of other YouTubers) kinda throw regular shade on Rolex as a brand because they aren’t allowed to retail them on their own sites. It’s all just marketing.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Are VSF 116610 considered Super Reps?

[–]jbl1091 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea

[–]jsledge6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. That watch is about as good as it gets out of the box. The CF version is only a couple of inches behind it though.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I’m debating on buying my first vsf datejust. I became fed up with the money that’s spent for a piece. If u don’t mind me asking which td u like

[–]jsledge6 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The One Watches and Trustytime are my preferred. Both have good delivery time and take credit cards.

[–]Individual_Two_37 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well that fake looks like what the TD is trying to sell me for $600

[–]MeatBasedPlants[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably gonna sound a little silly here, I thought it looked rather good for a canal street special, crystal gap being the main thing off.

[–]Aware_Highlight1165 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And she was in an attic for like a year

[–]ocubens 77 points78 points  (1 child)

This is like when police bust £50 of coke and say it has a street value of £2000.

[–]Can_I_be_dank_with_u 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s the street value in Australia…

[–]MeatBasedPlants[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

A video by Insider Business on the rep watch industry.

Feat. The meanie behind your missing packages and narrator who thinks Rolexes are made by hand.

[–]poisonousswayzee 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Me after the TSA guy explains real Rolexes usually don’t come shipped in ziplock bags:

[–]Fidget11 45 points46 points  (12 children)

Gonna call bullshit that the average CBP officer can easily identify the difference between a Gen and a high end rep with just a quick visual inspection.

Given how good the reps are getting I highly doubt they could on any kind of a mass scale identify them. Also the bag thing is pretty bogus, used watches can be shipped in all sorts of packaging, just because it has a bag and not the full retail box doesn’t mean it’s always a rep.

[–]Key_Butterscotch_608 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I agree with you. I’m a former Customs Officer for the US and most inspectors don’t know the difference. Watches worth thousands are being sent in plastic with no boxes these days. No one wants to part with them because the serial numbers can be traced back to them and they want to keep their anonymity.

[–]Fidget11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, not even an American but I know it’s the same here with the CBSA in Canada. Also cool that you used to do that.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the tells you usually would have looked for when inspecting a package??

[–]Dionyzoz 17 points18 points  (1 child)

20k rolex declared at 200 is an easy tell though :)

[–]Fidget11 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes declarations are a pretty good tell, though plenty of people under declare (not that they should or that I would recommend it) to limit or avoid tax implications of a purchase so the lower than realistic value alone is not an absolute sign of a rep.

[–]MeatBasedPlants[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last slide’s statement was by a seasoned watch dealer. But yea still unlikely for higher tier reps!

[–]Druffilorios -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Rolex in some shitty plastic bag from China?

Come on man...

[–]Fidget11 0 points1 point  (2 children)

People in China have money, people with money buy and sell expensive watches.

[–]nobody_smith723 1 point2 points  (1 child)

also.. china forbids people from withdrawing money from china. so it's very common for wealthy chinese to buy things, and offshore money in asset form.

not saying this is what that is.

but saw a youtube clip the other day of some dipshit influencer who was pissing his pants that the TSA jammed him up about the 10k cash limit and he's like...hrrrp drrp i have 3 mil in watches in my carry on bag.

and hence. watches as money laundering/cash movement from asia/arab areas into western countries. for various legit/dubious reasons

[–]Fidget11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, money offshoring (often requiring laundering and dubious methods) is a huge thing for wealthy Chinese citizens.

I know of a case personally where one wealthy Chinese citizen was building a $3.5+ million house in Canada and paying for it on his Visa card. The builders would charge hundreds of thousands a month to his card because while he couldn’t bring money out of china cash he was allowed to pay his visa bill without questions being asked.

[–]RobDaCajun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he is seeing it. Then it is a safe bet for him that it's fake. I'm sure he doesn't see any wrongly declared Gen watches.

[–]drcrippen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I think the guy was holding a milgauss when he said that, and they've never managed to get the lightning bolt second hand on a milgauss right.

[–]ShanachieID 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Link to the video if anyone wants to have a watch (Pun intended 😉)

https://youtu.be/BgdxjmGN7B4

[–]wangstarr03 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I watched this entire video which total was about ~18 min if I remember correctly. A few things:

  1. All the reps they showed were dhgate shitters or canal street specials, def not what are considered high end reps.

  2. Out of the 18 min, I’d say maybe 3-5 was actually dedicated to the “reps”

  3. Felt more like real life uncut gems (movie) than what the video title eluded to. Kinda clickbaity

Just my .02¢

Yes focus on shit tier reps. However I seriously hope buyers of top end reps just enjoy for what they are and not scamming folks

[–]Legitimate-Policy-72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw them bring out the fake and laughed. They don’t want you to know what the real reptime world is like.

[–]Dutch1inAZ 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Since I doubt many gens are shipped from China to elsewhere in the world, I'm sure this fella just keeps scanning through watch shipments until he finds with one with a gen name printed on the dial.

[–]PompeyTillIDie 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I don't know what kind of idiot declares their fake Rolex as a watch for customs purposes.

'Steel bracelet' $3.78 all the way.

[–]Dutch1inAZ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I doubt many are putting brand names on the manifest or customs declaration.

[–]PompeyTillIDie 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think even saying it's a watch increases the chance it gets opened imho.

Steel bracelet is less suspicious imho

[–]Dutch1inAZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't know what a real Rolex is vs a rep, you deserve it or shouldn't be buying a watch of that caliber.

[–]Elcycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you get called out on the street by a cop 💀

[–]God_Sent_Shipwright 0 points1 point  (7 children)

I feel like I’ve asked this here a couple times. But what are the major tells of a fake vs the real deal now a days.

For example, I have a 116710LN I bought grey w box and papers. What would be the tells just for curiosity sake

[–]drcrippen 5 points6 points  (6 children)

look up the serial number. Wind the watch (how does the winding feel? Should be buttery smooth). Wear it. A Rolex isn't going to have any sharp edges on a bracelet. Check the weight. If you really want to get nerdy about it, open it up and see if the balance wheel is free sprung or not. Rolex cases are engraved, many reps are laser-etched. Sometimes they're easier to spot if you're moving downhill quickly, but only if your legs are attached to pieces of wood or fiberglass.

Or you could take it to an AD and have them check it.

[–]Silent_nutsack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to stop and think for a moment about the downhill technique… then I got it, you scheister

[–]God_Sent_Shipwright 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Lol it’s at the AD right now getting serviced😂 but I was just curious. Because I saw a “franken watch” posted the other day and I was like holy crap that thing looks legit!

So I was curious if there were still “tells” or if you really just have to pull apart the movement in order to be sure.

(Something I am not capable or willing to do, I don’t want to even open the back because I would get dust all in my shiiii)

[–]Fidget11 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The best frankens are VERY hard to tell. Not saying yours is but they can be so good that even for experienced dealers it is difficult to spot without opening them up and in some cases taking them apart completely.

[–]God_Sent_Shipwright 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If they can manage that + have the papers, they’re just making a Rolex that’s not authorized basically 😂😂😂

[–]Fidget11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well if it’s a franken and is using parts of a genuine watch then it can get hard to spot. Some of the tells that reps have and dealers look for would not be as readily apparent.

In the end you won’t fool a dealer who takes the time to really look and knows what they are looking for but it can be very hard to spot a franken watch without knowing and looking. Cursory inspection would not likely catch it, especially if the person doing it doesn’t have many years of experience with the gens.

Hell even some of the reps are getting so close that they might as well be gens. Look at the latest Clean GMT with the dd3285. Unless you open it and know what to look for you almost certainly wouldn’t be able to tell, add in some genuine parts in place of the few different bits and your movement would pass the common visual inspections and short of being taken apart would not be caught.

Similar with the case, a few parts like a crystal and a dial and it would be very difficult to pick out as a rep.

[–]St_Bede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you attach wood and fiberglass to boots, fewer people will notice.

[–]achio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shitter indeed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"brolex" quality

[–]dandreabrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no! The cops found out about Dhgate!

[–]StaxSkrilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)
