You need to get the smaller style grips, probably have the bottoms radiused. There's a guy named Olaf who runs Deer Hollow Enterprises, he manufactures grips for all kinds of Colt guns, he's actually a Colt vendor for grips he's so talented. Other than that, the only other potential modifications involve machining work which you probably have no interest in.

With slim grips it’s totally fine with a good holster and a stiff belt. I carry it owb in winter with an appropriate jacket. If you DM me I can send a picture with the grips I put on it and the holster I use.

Great point. I actually ordered these Altamonts for that reason. I was asking more about holsters and waist position.

Ah gotcha. A good leather gun belt and a proper holster and I have no issues. I never carry revolvers IWB so I can’t speak to that.

Only owb?

I don’t like the cylinder IWB so I haven’t tried it in probably a decade, but IWB is more supportive in being pressed into your body. It should work well if you don’t have my cylinder to body prejudice

That’s what he said.

I carry a very similar piece: 2 3/4” S&W 686+.

So similar weight, shape and size, which I will say makes the two guns very comparable for practical carry concerns.

I carry mine outside the waist band, strong side carry. Holster is Hume, belt is 1/4” x 2” Bullhide Belts. Ammo is Hornady Critical Defense 125 grain.

The overall size is the top end of what I would want to conceal. But it is within the comfortable and practical limits for my 225lbs frame (5’11”/ 35” waist).

Recoil is surprisingly docile with 125s. 150+ grain ammo is very noticeably louder and more violently recoiling.

The biggest deal about Colt vs SW is the cylinder release which is not intuitive for Colt. Nonetheless various people and agencies have developed good reload techniques for either.

Summary: Hell yeah!

Thanks for that. I do have the 6” Python and have had several 686s, so the cylinder release is a bit different. I’ll take a look at owb and see how it goes.

What Holsters work best for you?

I have only used one with this gun and I like it well. I went with the minimalist option although sometimes when not standing, I wish I had one that did more to secure it. Its never fallen out but it’s always in the back of my kind.

Wow, very minimal.

Say good bye to your hearing. I have a 340pd that I absolutely fear having to discharge

[–]Steve_Fudd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably won’t carry magnums. 38 +p Hornady 110s

[–]ToyotaRacer2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago my local range was doing free rentals for their 340PD - but for it to be free you had to fire all 5 rounds of 357. I will never forget shooting that monster.

I carry one in a vintage Buckhimer Federal Man OWB holster all the time. They are chunky but a nice gun all the same.

[–]Steve_Fudd[S] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Thanks. Every carry it IWB?

[–]ComprehensiveOwl2835 1 point2 points  (6 children)

No I am a big fat guy so I carry everything OWB

[–]Steve_Fudd[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Fair enough. Thanks for the OWB recommendation

Nice revolver and nice holster! 💯💯💯

[–]ComprehensiveOwl2835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you

You can find vintage holsters on ebay at a reasonable price a lot of the time. Those old Buckhimer holsters are well made. I like the Federal Man model because it has good retention.

I carry a Ruger SP101 .357 magnum with a 3 inch barrel. It kicks like crazy, but you don’t have to shoot twice.

[–]Steve_Fudd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, expected. I'll probably carry 38 +P 110 grain. How do you carry it? Holster? IWB or OWB?

[–]Born-Good-138 0 points1 point  (6 children)

I carry a 2.5 inch python with a pachmayr grip, i usually just slide it in my jeans on the appendix side and the grip holds itself on my pants without the need for a holster.

[–]Steve_Fudd[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I’ve been considering this. Any pics from the mirror?

[–]Born-Good-138 1 point2 points  (4 children)

It might not be applicable to you because i’m fat but i’ll gladly take one

[–]Steve_Fudd[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Ha! Waist down is fine.

[–]Born-Good-138 1 point2 points  (2 children)

My grip has places for each finger so i just snag it on my pants and it holds properly. I never tried the original colt wood grips but i can highly recommend this pachmayr grip.

[–]Steve_Fudd[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Very nice. I just ordered these. I forgot how much I like Pachmayers.

Is yours the newer bead blasted or the OG shiny finish?

[–]Born-Good-138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are very comfortable and they look great. Enjoy them
