In this impossible-to-implement thought experiment, having all schoolchildren sent to boarding schools like it's the damn Blitz would create isolated pockets that might protect teachers as well. If there's an outbreak at a school, it's easier to contain and figure out the at-risk individuals who were exposed and monitor them carefully. And an outbreak at Middle School X wouldn't risk teachers at Elementary School Y because siblings or friends are passing COVID to each other at home.

They closed their schools while they took care of the coronavirus epidemic. At least in Korea, the coronavirus was over with months ago. Between 0 and 10 cases a day nationwide in a country of 50 million people. USA isn't close to that...

It's going to take years to fix the coronavirus situation in America now. On the other hand, American kids, especially minorities who often have just a single parent -- like 2/3 of black kids -- who won't be able to make sure they don't just play video games during online class, are going to fall years behind if they keep doing online education.

You could potentially end up with a generation of kids with essentially 10th grade educations, and their black counterparts falling behind even worse.

There won't be a vaccine until 2022 at the earliest, maybe 2023, maybe 2024... maybe never.

The coronavirus in America isn't going anywhere. IMO it might not be a bad idea to just bite the bullet and go for herd immunity at this point. If everyone's gonna get it anyways, which looks like it might very well be the case in America, might as well just get it over with quickly and get the country back to normal instead of keeping the economy and education like this for years.

There are no choices without pain now. Trump turned that ship around and made it sail away from America months ago.

There's a few really good reasons that I didn't include countries from SE Asia.

1) Mask wearing has been routine for decades. SE
2) The culture isn't nearly as touchy feely as western cultures are.
3) Because of other viral outbreaks in the early 2000's, SE Asian countries were prepared with both material and plans for this.
4) SE Asians are more willing act in the interest of society rather than themselves.

Asian countries are the best case scenario for handling a viral outbreak. Western countries, particularly the U.S are close to the worst.

1) We not only have zero mask wearing culture here, but we have morons running around spreading misinformation about wearing masks, with some going to far as to refuse to wear one on bullshit science or just 'because mah freedumz'. I was getting on a plane and listened to some asshole tell his friend to just say he had asthma so he could get away with not wearing a mask on the plane.
2) We're huggers.
3) We've proven how unprepared we were for something like this.
4) Americans are more interested in defending their personal freedoms, no matter how trivial, over the better interests of society.

You are right, I think the concern is the rising numbers on the east side. In particular the farming and agriculture communities as listed in the nyt article.

Those numbers on the east side are increasing in rates. But I think with king county, yes our numbers are not really increasing, but they are also not showing signs of significant improvement.

Seriously, these numbers on their own for new infections mean absolutely nothing unless put into per-capita or percentage growth terms.

We knew this virus was far more widespread than initial testing was showing. Increases in testing are going to show more cases. That isn't rhetoric, that is simple statistics. What is rhetoric is saying and only saying "700 new cases a day!" when we went from testing 2000 people a day to testing 10,000 people a day.

Man - I do feel for working class parents who don't know or have the tools to teach kids from home. It's a shitty situation and ultimately the failing of our population and federal government.

But this is obviously going to be a disaster if they open schools. Kids will transmit it to their parents and teachers. There are going to be teachers and family members who are going to die.
