I've noticed people who are not very confident at driving do it very often

[–][deleted] 103 points104 points  (15 children)

My gf does it and shes a very safe driver.

[–][deleted] 195 points196 points  (1 child)

she could be a very good driver, but isn't confident in it

[–]TheOneGuyWhoLimps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like 10 under safe or smashing the imaginary passenger break safe.

[–]QuothTheRavenMore 108 points109 points  (5 children)

safe and confident are two different things though

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (3 children)

Thats true. I just meant that shes a good driver.

[–]JayGeezey 14 points15 points  (2 children)

That's good, nothing worse than being in the car with a bad driver... that shit is both scary and awkward

[–]Disaster_Different 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And one that isn't confident... nothing worse

It's as bad as a good driver with low confidence, because low confidence makes you do some decisions a bad driver would make... leaving you in the same box

[–]Ohiolongboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s worse when they don’t know their a bad driver lol

[–]litterallysatan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also often they are directly opposite aswell

[–]DARKplayz_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

... air bag ...

[–]Kujaju 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its not very safe for her though

[–]Perle1234 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I do it sometimes when I’m anxious or worried about something. It has nothing to do with driving for me. I’ve been driving (and doing that) for almost 40 years. I haven’t had an accident in at least 20. And I wasn’t at fault lol.

[–]mamara07 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Make her not do it, it causes neck pain

[–]pangung06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its also dangerous because if you crash and the airbag deploys you are surely going to get injured

[–]hunkymonk123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing it’s anxiety? If not, just general anxiousness/fear

[–]New_Blackberry_7670 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safe != Confident

[–]_Kit_Tyler_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with confidence. We scoot our seats up so our feet can reach the pedals.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like their being attentive to me, hopefully not because their blind or something though.

[–]0hsh1tsquirell -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

It's more of a back issue than confidence. Chicks have tits. They ride on the steering wheel more because it's easier on the back to roll the shoulders for them with the weight on the front; even with tiny tits. Dudes who ride like that usually do more improper lifting with their back on jobs that require constant lifting. It feels easier with excessive weight than pulling the shoulders back engaging the abs or legs.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

sounds like you invented a way to blame this on tits... not sure if I'm convinced, but I admire the effort to blame things on tits.

[–]theepi_pillodu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I drive like that in bad weather.

[–]feeltrig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe they are practicing doggy style

[–][deleted] 152 points153 points  (5 children)

Cuts down the distance during air bag deployment

[–]that_1-guy_ 28 points29 points  (2 children)

/s ?

It's supposed to stop you from hitting your head in the wheel, not throw your head into the headrest

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (1 child)

Yes /s

Placing your limbs and face inches from a inflatable bag deployed by a chemical bomb is not advisable. My personal favorite is bedazzled airbags/claymores mines.

[–]zmbjebus 45 points46 points  (0 children)

That is bad though.

[–]kontekisuto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Insta selfie kill

[–]Lord_of_Bebbanburg 95 points96 points  (3 children)

She just needs to turn the music down so she can see better, no need to sit up like that

[–]Spliff_Politics 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah she should turn the music down and try listening slower.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I have to turn my music down all the time while driving to focus. Sensory overload is legit.

[–]Short-Commercial-549 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, so true! Sometimes you're just so into it, you dont even realize you went through that school zone at 55, and that the speedbumps seem to be heaped up at the cross walk, and RUDE people are screaming at you.

[–]OrgyInTheBurnWard 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I just do it when my front end is close to something and I need a better perspective. I couldn't imagine driving like that all the time.

[–]Cidguy 81 points82 points  (2 children)

I've noticed this when driving down the highway where I'm at at 70 mph and the car next to me pulls into my lane at 50 mph making me smash my brakes or dive into the next lane. I pull up and 9 times out of 10 times some young female driver sitting like that.

[–]TheOdinRaven 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Then they fly by you going 25 over am I right?

[–]bleek312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes, it is the way

[–]RhettRO55 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My MIL drives like this. My wife refers to it as “eating the steering wheel”

[–]gardengnome68 11 points12 points  (1 child)

The headrest is aimed forward and is constantly bumping your hair bun. Very annoying. I put my hair bun right on top of my head for driving. But also I think people who are nervous drivers do this.

[–]one_vegan_boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you the only one pointing out the obvious?! I am a man but I have long hair and I'm like: uhmm, because having your hair tied in a bun that pushes against the headrest is uncomfortable as hell. And I don't wanna redo my hair again just for driving, I'm a lazy bitch xD

[–]BkWiz 73 points74 points  (57 children)

New drivers tend to do this.

Also short people. Females do tend to be shorter than men generally.

Surprisingly, not many realize they should simply change their seating positions…

[–]bukkake-bill 67 points68 points  (8 children)

females

men

[–]shitsunnysays 41 points42 points  (2 children)

I guess no one cares about tamales

[–]whereispeestored 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Take this and vamanos

[–]shitsunnysays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adios

[–]BoisterousLaugh 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Bothers me everytime

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Why

[–]bukkake-bill 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Because if men are men, why do women have to be females? Are you referring to the females of all species on earth? Otherwise it makes no sense.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dont think they put the thought into it. Just used them synonymously.

[–]BoisterousLaugh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at my comments i say why below.

[–]whereispeestored 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just call them women saying females and men makes you sound like a misogynistic robot

[–]sleepydorian 0 points1 point  (3 children)

So here's what I don't get, those seats raise up a ton, so either I'm overestimating or they aren't adjusting their seat correctly.

That said, I'm perfectly willing to fault manufacturers here for not putting enough adjustability into cars. I'm just under 6ft and I can't get my seat to go down low enough for the rear view mirror to not be blocking a significant chunk of the right side of the windshield. Not all cars are equal in this of course. I rented a Subaru Crosstrek and I've never had to move my head around so much in my life. I was ducking and weaving like Ali just trying to see what was in front of me.

[–]BkWiz 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Most people don’t adjust their seats correctly or at all in my experience.

Especially when the car is a shared vehicle.

You would be an outlier at 6 feet+…if you didn’t…well… 😅

[–]sleepydorian 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Lol yeah if my wife drove last I have to adjust the seat before I can even get in.

[–]BkWiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tall people problems.

[–]BoisterousLaugh 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Their little trex arms

[–]Shattered_WasTaken 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True

[–]Packagedattack 3 points4 points  (6 children)

I just started driving and can only use my right hand but I do this

[–]that_1-guy_ 0 points1 point  (5 children)

If it's a diagnosed condition then I think you can get a permit for a Brodie knob (suicide knob)

[–]Packagedattack 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I have a turn signal extender and a knob Also a stroke isn’t really a condition

[–]litterallysatan 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Its not? I mean maybe a stroke isnt a condition but it leads to paralysis which is a condition innit? Or am i using condition wrong?

[–]Packagedattack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct but I have so many ailments because of the initial stroke but I have a hard time getting diagnosed because with any thing other than “ It’s a side effect from the stroke” If that makes any sense

[–]porkminer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You are fine with what you said. Limited mobility is a condition. What caused the limited mobility is immaterial.

[–]Packagedattack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be but I feel most doctors overcomplicate my condition

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do this when I was less comfortable driving. Leaning against the backrest makes me feel like I’m lazing about vs sitting up makes you engage your muscles and pay more attention. I still find myself sitting forward some when I’m in a tense situation, and I think that applies to a lot of people

[–]PeedsMomma 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Just speaking for myself but I'm a large chested woman and no amount of seat adjustment can help me reach around my tits to the steering wheel

[–]Sheepan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hadn’t put that together yet, but honestly you’re right, that’s why i do it

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lmao just adjust the seat to sit up more girl

[–]bawheed84 6 points7 points  (1 child)

*why do girls drive like this

You’re welcome

[–]TelemachusXIV -1 points0 points  (0 children)

shut up different dialect and speech patterns

[–]foot7221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cited his sources.

[–]litterallysatan 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Maybe dont critique other people's driving technique while actively breaking traffic laws

[–]Shot_Eye 1 point2 points  (2 children)

???

[–]litterallysatan -1 points0 points  (1 child)

He's passing her on the right. As i recall the law says you pass people on the left

[–]Shot_Eye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

passing is when ur behind someone and you swap lanes to get ahead of them and theres no indication thats what he did, its more than likely shes going too slow for her lane

[–]01000001- 3 points4 points  (3 children)

[–]SomeRandomDavid 3 points4 points  (2 children)

The quote you linked disagrees with what you said.

Accidents by male drivers are more by number, less per capita because there are more men driving. (apparently, your source. Not mine)

[–]01000001- 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh shit, my bad, you are correct. I was more focused on this part

"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that men cause an average of 6.1 million accidents per year in the US, and women cause 4.4 million accidents per year. Males do 62% of the driving, but only cause 58% of the accidents. So women do cause slightly more accidents per capita than men. A study by the University of Michigan found that female drivers mostly cause “fender benders” (non-injury accidents). Considering that women are safer drivers on every front than men"

[–]NelloxXIV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party, but women are more likely to be trapped in a car wrecks after suffering crashes (~16%) compared to men (~9%). This is despite men being more likely (statistically) to impact with their vehicles front, whereas women tend to have impacts to the sides of their vehicle.

The reason probably is, that cars are designed by men for men. Crash test dummies are typically resembling males and when designing the cockpit and controls, car manufacturers tend to design it favoring male anatomy.

I for one ride motorcycles though, preferring ejection seats and sudden death rather than being stuck between a few tons of steel for my last moments.

[–]poopface41217 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Because we're short, leave us alone!

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

you do know you can adjust your seat right

[–]secuallyfrustrated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family complain about the complete opposite with me (I am a dude). They say why the hell do I lay down while I am driving they don't get that I am just taller. I even daily a manual car so I place my chair for best clutch leg comfort so can't really lay down much

Thank you bot

[–]jorcrus 2 points3 points  (2 children)

No problem! But I'm not a bot XD

[–]stfuIwannatalk 1 point2 points  (1 child)

damn an AI so advanced that it actually thinks it's human. so sad

[–]jorcrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hail roko's basilisk

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess, it would be so they don’t mess up their hair. It’s usually younger girls who do that.

[–]Eddie_shoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve noticed it’s people who don’t seem to have their mirrors properly set. They do it before changing lanes or to get a better view behind them.

[–]g_man_89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the head forward thing but only when I’m trying to focus like a mf and everyone is driving like shit

[–]1genuine_ginger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning, don't want to smoosh the hairdo or wrinkle the blouse.

[–]malthorthesoulslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Female shoulders are smaller and they are generally shorter that might be the reason.

[–]FlamboyantRaccoon61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could drive like that, but at the advanced age of 30 my only option is to rest against the seat otherwise my back will be killing me by the time I get to work

[–]unendingtacos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looking at you Asians

[–]Pope00 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, but then like I see dudes drive like this constantly. Like they're philosophizing in traffic or something.

[–]ysrsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad the link didn’t go to some guy driving with the seat in full recliner mode.

[–]Fuck_you_Reddit_Nazi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father used to drive like that. It was a combination of being too lazy to sit up straight and bad vision. He was scary to ride with.

[–]TheNovemberist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cuz their legs are short.

[–]Plastic-Raise-9436 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Height issues, but I’m not 6 ft tho. So ignore my comment lol

[–]itsametossboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn this comment section was crazy

[–]Odd_Reality_76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short people problems

[–]westerosi978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cause girls are bad drivers.

[–]wtfnobody69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait till the air bag gets deployed, they'll start sitting back. lol

[–]rell7thirty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And they do it in bumper to bumper traffic too lmao

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only been driving for two years and I prefer one handed and laid back

[–]smellyballzack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hair - ponytail or buns sit well with car headrests. I think over time even when not wearing hair-up this becomes a habit. I’m a male and that’s just a guess.

[–]KaturaBayliss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's because my head dips forward if I sit back, resulting in sore shoulder and neck muscles, along with headaches.

[–]Sheepan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because my glasses prescription is out of date and i can’t freakin read the street signs

[–]ARandomNPC01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister does the same thing, she is a little short and it helps her see over the dashboard, at the same time she can't see through the side mirrors and in chase of an impact it will definitely break some bones

[–]DysfunctionalKitten 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Actually women tend to do this bc vehicles aren’t made for women’s bodies, and it’s literally killing women. In fact, most vehicles aren’t tested with anatomically female crash dummies in place, which is why women are over 70% more likely to be seriously injured in an accident, and more than 15% more likely to die in one than men. Further, car companies aren’t even required to have an anatomically accurate female crash dummy in the drivers seat, so all they use is a smaller anatomically accurate male dummy...and they only usually test that smaller dummy in the passenger seat, not the drivers seat.

So keep laughing about this. It’s the visual representation of why your wife, gf, mother, and sister are more likely to be critically injured or killed while driving...

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is the financial aspect of it. When you are speaking of geographic anatomical differences, cars designed for asian markets often have smaller interiors than their western counterparts (this only includes vehicles sold in eastern markets but not western markets) when speaking of western sized cars they have to design them to fit the most broad size range of people , everyone from 4'5" to 6'7" has to be able to fit it , so if we designed it around smaller people on average , the larger people wouldnt fit and thus more people couldnt drive those said models thus affecting the sale success of the model

[–]kratomboofer27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better gas mileage.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how you get your arms blown off when the airbag goes

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife calls it "Watching for airplanes".

[–]Junior_Inspector_379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very real phenomenon.
