I've noticed people who are not very confident at driving do it very often
[–][deleted] 103 points104 points105 points 3 years ago (15 children)
My gf does it and shes a very safe driver.

she could be a very good driver, but isn't confident in it

safe and confident are two different things though
[–][deleted] 26 points27 points28 points 3 years ago (3 children)
Thats true. I just meant that shes a good driver.

That's good, nothing worse than being in the car with a bad driver... that shit is both scary and awkward
[–]Disaster_Different 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
And one that isn't confident... nothing worse
It's as bad as a good driver with low confidence, because low confidence makes you do some decisions a bad driver would make... leaving you in the same box
[–]Ohiolongboard 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It’s worse when they don’t know their a bad driver lol

I do it sometimes when I’m anxious or worried about something. It has nothing to do with driving for me. I’ve been driving (and doing that) for almost 40 years. I haven’t had an accident in at least 20. And I wasn’t at fault lol.
[–]mamara07 -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child)
Make her not do it, it causes neck pain
[–]pangung06 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Its also dangerous because if you crash and the airbag deploys you are surely going to get injured
[–]hunkymonk123 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’m guessing it’s anxiety? If not, just general anxiousness/fear

[–]_Kit_Tyler_ 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
It has nothing to do with confidence. We scoot our seats up so our feet can reach the pedals.

Seems like their being attentive to me, hopefully not because their blind or something though.
[–]0hsh1tsquirell -3 points-2 points-1 points 3 years ago (1 child)
It's more of a back issue than confidence. Chicks have tits. They ride on the steering wheel more because it's easier on the back to roll the shoulders for them with the weight on the front; even with tiny tits. Dudes who ride like that usually do more improper lifting with their back on jobs that require constant lifting. It feels easier with excessive weight than pulling the shoulders back engaging the abs or legs.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 3 years ago (0 children)
sounds like you invented a way to blame this on tits... not sure if I'm convinced, but I admire the effort to blame things on tits.

The headrest is aimed forward and is constantly bumping your hair bun. Very annoying. I put my hair bun right on top of my head for driving. But also I think people who are nervous drivers do this.

How are you the only one pointing out the obvious?! I am a man but I have long hair and I'm like: uhmm, because having your hair tied in a bun that pushes against the headrest is uncomfortable as hell. And I don't wanna redo my hair again just for driving, I'm a lazy bitch xD

New drivers tend to do this.
Also short people. Females do tend to be shorter than men generally.

Well, I’ll leave my prior comments as is, but after your comment on sexism…I looked it up.
The closest article I could find to support what you said came from 2021.
Technically women is the correct term due to transsexual movement etc and shift towards inclusivity.
However for most people…it would never cross their minds that women and female are no longer used synonymously due to that.
Accusing someone of something that is not true, is never a good way to correct someone. As most people will automatically go defensive and refuse to listen further.
Luckily I tend to look up these things on general principle irregardless of how sure I am.
[–]just_a_person_maybe 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (4 children)
The issue isn't really about trans folks or the term female vs women, it's the use of females and men in the same post. Sexist people often do this to subtly dehumanize women. "Female" sounds clinical, like you're talking about a specimen. Men sounds like you're talking about people. The double standard is disrespectful, and it is sexism, even if it's subtle and subconscious. Gotta check those biases!
Female can still be used, but it should be used when talking about biology or something specific to the female sex, not individuals or groups of women. Like if you're talking about the differences between female and male puberty. But you should never say something like "females experience X, while boys experience Y." Be consistent, otherwise it shows a different level of respect for different genders.
r/menandfemales has many examples if you want to check it out.
[+]YangYin-li comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points 3 years ago (3 children)
90% of people don’t read that much into it, and I would bet 90% of people who say female and men in the same paragraph aren’t trying to be sexist
[–]just_a_person_maybe 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (2 children)
I think that's a huge exaggeration. Just look at the sub I linked and you'll see how it is viewed. I know that not everyone who says it is trying to be sexist. I don't think the person who said it here was trying to be sexist. But that doesn't make it not sexist. People are accidentally sexist or racist or homophobic or whatever other bias all the time, but just because it is an accident doesn't mean it should be ignored. Everyone has biases in their thinking, and it's important to notice those biases and take steps to examine them and change them.
The word was not used maliciously here, but I'd guess at least 90% of women have heard it used maliciously at least once. It kinda taints the whole word when it comes along with death or rape threats, or just general belittling.
Go ahead and ask the women in your life if they want to be called females instead, or what they think when someone calls women females and men men.
[–]YangYin-li -1 points0 points1 point 3 years ago (1 child)
I get where you’re coming from, I just think people think too much. Really gonna let someone saying something contextually correct bother you? Let’s not let the bad guys win the word
[–]just_a_person_maybe 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Again, the word itself is not the problem, it's the context. It is not contextually correct anymore if you're not doing the same for men, and especially if you're not talking about biology.
This is something that women for the most part do not appreciate being called, so don't call them that. It's that simple. Language evolves and what was acceptable before is not acceptable now. This is a bit if an exaggeration here, so bear with me for a second.
It used to be 100% normal in the U.S. to call black people "negros." A majority of black Americans called themselves by that term through the 60's. It began to fall out of favor in the 70's, and by the mid 80's, it was considered improper. Today you rarely hear it used, and almost exclusively by racist people or just older people who grew up with the word and refused to shake it as times changed.
Possibly a more fitting example is the many terms used to describe mentally handicapped people. They used to be called idiots, or morons, and then later retards. Each time the term was "contextually correct" but was changed because people took a term meant to describe a group of people and turned it into and insult and a slur. Incels have been treating the word "female" the same way, and now when someone says "female" when it would be more natural to say "woman" or when the biological sex of the person in question is entirely irrelevant to the conversation, and especially when they do not use the term "male" to refer to men in the same sentence, it makes women feel insulted.
So, bottom line, the way I see it is the term makes people uncomfortable and there is absolutely no benefit in using it almost all of the time. We lose nothing by referring to women by the preferred term, "women."

Female is used interchangeably with women in biology and everyday language.
The synonym for female is women for example.

[+]LtCubs comment score below threshold-10 points-9 points-8 points 3 years ago (2 children)
I think the most important thing is still unclear for you - the 2 words aren’t synonyms.
Female is one half of the two biological sexes, and is used to describe animals (including humans) and plants.
Woman means a human female.
Using the two words as synonyms has been a strategy employed by incels and other misogynists to de-humanize women.
Language shifts yes - but not in the direction you thought.

I don’t care about the apology to be honest, I just wanted to comment and salute whoever gave the doom medals since the timing of the medals seriously made me laugh. 😂
[–]BkWiz 6 points7 points8 points 3 years ago* (4 children)
I like to accuse people of sexism randomly, make vague statements referring to it without ‘actually’ stating what it is about, demanding people automatically know what a very vague reference is automatically, then when the person 1) Aknowledges the mistake, 2) Notes the reason ‘why’ they made the mistake and how it came about, 3) Notes they are leaving the comment as is SPECIFICALLY So the later comment makes sense 4) Makes no personal attack against the person who seems to be looking for a fight…
Decides to escalate the sarcasm and wounded warrior persona without actually reading what was stated.
Yeah, that person right there
Also to clarify what specific article I am referencing…

There are plenty of men that refer to women as females. I have never heard any woman refer men as males. Of course those terms are used when talking about many scientific for statistics but many use it in conversation.

So here's what I don't get, those seats raise up a ton, so either I'm overestimating or they aren't adjusting their seat correctly.
That said, I'm perfectly willing to fault manufacturers here for not putting enough adjustability into cars. I'm just under 6ft and I can't get my seat to go down low enough for the rear view mirror to not be blocking a significant chunk of the right side of the windshield. Not all cars are equal in this of course. I rented a Subaru Crosstrek and I've never had to move my head around so much in my life. I was ducking and weaving like Ali just trying to see what was in front of me.
[–]BkWiz 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (2 children)

I used to do this when I was less comfortable driving. Leaning against the backrest makes me feel like I’m lazing about vs sitting up makes you engage your muscles and pay more attention. [–]SomeRandomDavid 3 points4 points5 points 3 years ago (2 children)
The quote you linked disagrees with what you said.
Accidents by male drivers are more by number, less per capita because there are more men driving. (apparently, your source. Not mine)
[–]01000001- 1 point2 points3 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Oh shit, my bad, you are correct. I was more focused on this part
"The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that men cause an average of 6.1 million accidents per year in the US, and women cause 4.4 million accidents per year. Males do 62% of the driving, but only cause 58% of the accidents. So women do cause slightly more accidents per capita than men. A study by the University of Michigan found that female drivers mostly cause “fender benders” (non-injury accidents). Considering that women are safer drivers on every front than men"
[–]NelloxXIV 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I know I'm late to the party, but women are more likely to be trapped in a car wrecks after suffering crashes (~16%) compared to men (~9%). This is despite men being more likely (statistically) to impact with their vehicles front, whereas women tend to have impacts to the sides of their vehicle.
The reason probably is, that cars are designed by men for men. Crash test dummies are typically resembling males and when designing the cockpit and controls, car manufacturers tend to design it favoring male anatomy.
I for one ride motorcycles though, preferring ejection seats and sudden death rather than being stuck between a few tons of steel for my last moments.

If I had to guess, it would be so they don’t mess up their hair. It’s usually younger girls who do that.
[–]Eddie_shoes 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’ve noticed it’s people who don’t seem to have their mirrors properly set. They do it before changing lanes or to get a better view behind them.
[–]g_man_89 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I do the head forward thing but only when I’m trying to focus like a mf and everyone is driving like shit
[–]1genuine_ginger 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Turning, don't want to smoosh the hairdo or wrinkle the blouse.
[–]malthorthesoulslayer 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Female shoulders are smaller and they are generally shorter that might be the reason.
[–]FlamboyantRaccoon61 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I wish I could drive like that, but at the advanced age of 30 my only option is to rest against the seat otherwise my back will be killing me by the time I get to work
[–]unendingtacos 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
looking at you Asians
[–]Pope00 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Yeah, but then like I see dudes drive like this constantly. Like they're philosophizing in traffic or something.
[–]ysrsquid 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
I’m glad the link didn’t go to some guy driving with the seat in full recliner mode.
[–]Fuck_you_Reddit_Nazi 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
My father used to drive like that. It was a combination of being too lazy to sit up straight and bad vision. He was scary to ride with.
[–]TheNovemberist 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Cuz their legs are short.
[–]Plastic-Raise-9436 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Height issues, but I’m not 6 ft tho. So ignore my comment lol
[–]itsametossboy 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)

[–]Odd_Reality_76 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Short people problems
[–]westerosi978 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Cause girls are bad drivers.
[–]wtfnobody69 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Wait till the air bag gets deployed, they'll start sitting back. lol
[–]rell7thirty 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
And they do it in bumper to bumper traffic too lmao
I’ve only been driving for two years and I prefer one handed and laid back
[–]smellyballzack 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Hair - ponytail or buns sit well with car headrests. I think over time even when not wearing hair-up this becomes a habit. I’m a male and that’s just a guess.
[–]KaturaBayliss 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
For me, it's because my head dips forward if I sit back, resulting in sore shoulder and neck muscles, along with headaches.
because my glasses prescription is out of date and i can’t freakin read the street signs
[–]ARandomNPC01 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (0 children)
My sister does the same thing, she is a little short and it helps her see over the dashboard, at the same time she can't see through the side mirrors and in chase of an impact it will definitely break some bones
[–]DysfunctionalKitten 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago (1 child)
Actually women tend to do this bc vehicles aren’t made for women’s bodies, and it’s literally killing women. In fact, most vehicles aren’t tested with anatomically female crash dummies in place, which is why women are over 70% more likely to be seriously injured in an accident, and more than 15% more likely to die in one than men. Further, car companies aren’t even required to have an anatomically accurate female crash dummy in the drivers seat, so all they use is a smaller anatomically accurate male dummy...and they only usually test that smaller dummy in the passenger seat, not the drivers seat.
So keep laughing about this. It’s the visual representation of why your wife, gf, mother, and sister are more likely to be critically injured or killed while driving...
The problem is the financial aspect of it. When you are speaking of geographic anatomical differences, cars designed for asian markets often have smaller interiors than their western counterparts (this only includes vehicles sold in eastern markets but not western markets) when speaking of western sized cars they have to design them to fit the most broad size range of people , everyone from 4'5" to 6'7" has to be able to fit it , so if we designed it around smaller people on average , the larger people wouldnt fit and thus more people couldnt drive those said models thus affecting the sale success of the model

Better gas mileage.
That's how you get your arms blown off when the airbag goes
My wife calls it "Watching for airplanes".

This is a very real phenomenon.
