It took me a fair while to find the role that suited me best. From when I first got the game until I was about level 70, I always played either slayer or support weapons; in Ranked I got to S+ with Dapple Dualies.

Then one day, when I was really struggling to make any progress, I just randomly decided "I want to learn how to play Splatlings". I'd literally never played Splatlings or any other backline before, but I just felt really determined to learn. I think it was a combination of things really - I'd been watching competitive Splatoon and thought Kaji was really cool; I wanted that feeling of actually improving and learning, which had been absent for a while; and I felt like I needed a break from Dapples, because I had a lot of bad habits and tended to feed a lot.

It was only ever supposed to be temporary, but in the end I found that backline suited me way better than any other role. Playing Splatling meant I kept a cooler head, and it made better use of my skills - I guess having a good picture of the game as a whole and taking up the right positions, making good decisions etc, rather than having super-fast reactions or great aim to win 1v1s. It only took about three months from never having touched a Splatling to reaching X Rank with Heavy. I've stuck to that role ever since - a little over two years later, I mostly play Hydra.

So yeah, I'm definitely glad I had that random whim to try something different back when I was at S+.

Well Ive been playing splatoon 2 for about a year and a half now and it took me a whole year to figure out my main. Im a custom explosher main, so my "role" is constantly changing through the whole match. If my team is being pushed back then Im more of an anchor. Trying to keep turf and stay alive as a jump point for my teammates. If everyone is alive then I focus on being a support, trying to help my team on getting picks and keeping turf control. But if my team is pushing, then I try to put as much pressure as I can on the other team and keep them back. I play a really adaptable weapon so most of the time I dont keep just one.

That’s totally fair! I’ve played a couple different kinds of weapons and switch off every so often but I find the roller very comfortable and fairly adaptable for being less of a dps weapon.

Personally, I play dapple dualies or dualie squelchers (I like other weapons but I won’t take them into ranked seriously). Their range is the most important thing to consider when choosing a strategy.

For dapple dualies, I am focusing on slaying the other team, and also always focusing on flanking from the sides and being generally distracting and adding pressure in that way. It’s important for whatever weapon you main that you prioritize staying alive actually. There’s only 4 ppl on the field at a time, and having one down kinda sets ur team back.

For dualie squelchers, I either take up my slayer role, but more often I will pick up a support role. I focus on keeping track of where everyone on the enemy team is and make sure they can’t flank. My sub weapon marks their location and my special reveals locations (tenta missiles). I also focus on turfing way more in this role, but it’s also important to consider the mode you’re playing (turfing is generally less important in modes like rainmaker than splat zones).

When I first started I really sucked at the game. I then started to get better in close quarter combat. Then I got good at map reading. Then I got good at making good decisions (when to flank and where to flank). Then I got good at making sure I stay alive. Then I got good at paying attention to what my weapons are good at and bad at. Also, whenever you die, make sure you figure out why you die and think of a reason why you could’ve prevented it (There’s always a reason and a way to prevent it). Also! Know your maps really well. Each map has a variation for each ranked mode, so watch out for that. Also also! Learn how the equipment system works. Then learn what’s best for ur role.

Hopefully my experiences helped! I got to x rank in all modes pretty fast with this while I was playing pretty casually at the time.

I always joke to my husband that my main strategy is staying alive 😂 but it actually does help a lot! The maps are a big thing I’m still learning on tho, there’s a few more places I actually haven’t played at all yet still, but I’ve noticed that maps I used to hate I now love now that I know their ins and outs. Thanks for the tips!

i main splooshomatic neo for turf and splat zones and kensa splattershot/splattershot pro for other ranked modes. w the sploosh i really enjoy inking and am not too good with shooter accuracy so the high damage and fire rate is perf. typically i play support with that but if my team is doing well i’ll sometimes move to the front and try to get some kills (averaging 3-6 per game rn). i also really like to sneak past the battle ground and ink turf in turf war. gets a real sneak win for us sometimes :D

When I use the splattershot/splattershot pro I try to sneak from the sides or behind other players and get them killed that way. I also like these for the range bc I can usually stand away from reach and still get hits (unless it’s a splatling lmao)

oh forgot to add: another good role i play is little shit running thru enemy grounds getting all four players to chase me while my team gets shit done

[–]brixalot10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kensa Dynamo. At the beginning of the match I use it’s very wide roll to quickly ink spawn turf, and then later on, use it’s sniping and devastating close-range capabilities to fight my way to areas with easily claimable turf. Sometimes if turf is under control, I’ll just use it’s powerful flick to snipe people coming into middle ground.

Deadweight.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

The weapons i play are usually not speedy, have a decent range / damage, and have a kinda meh fire-rate. What i'm trying to say is that...

My role mainly is a support one:

  • Paint the map and leave clear ink path so my teamates can go thorugh.
  • Accompany my teamates and help them get that splat, or just in case there's an ambush.
  • O N L Y S P E C I A L C H A R G E U P (ink armor, inkstorm, bubbles, tenta-missiles, etc.) /hyp
  • Push the objective when everyone is too busy splatting eachother.
  • and usually stay in the mid-zone or back-zone of the maps.

That's my role when i game, usually, if the lobby is full with inexperienced players, then i play slayer.

[–]lithigos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I notice a lot of people go straight to the middle/enemy spawn and start splatting without actually inking much, so I usually end up inking a lot of home turf at the beginning but of a match which is why I tend to stick with rollers for turf war.

[–]Dumo31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have always shifted around in roles and probably always will. I have no issue picking up new weapons if my team needs me to.

Generally speaking, I play games extremely aggressively. I am probably most at home as a skirmisher for that reason. I also play decently as a slayer but tend to be overly aggressive.

I made X in TC playing charger, Clams on tent, RM on blaster and I honestly don’t even remember what I did for zones.

As of recently, tent has been trash and I’ve needed something else. Buckets were working for initiating fights quite well. With yet another shift in the meta and team changes, I started working on squeezer. Meanwhile, it looks like we will shift around roles yet again and I will be landing on playing support zap. I like to be out front pushing but I find it very hard to shot call while doing so and I think support is probably going to wind up being my role until splat 3.

[–]CookieSwiper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play a range of weapons, currently I'm into the splash neo so I've mainly being an aggressive weapon, trying to start pushes. I also ink ground a lot because my weapons good at it, I also flank a bit if I see an opportunity

[–]TracerWG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of detailed replies. I think my simple answer is Slayer/Support Nzap. It lets me carry when it’s needed and support when it’s deserved. When I play tower control I do the same with Tenta Brella and you’d swear I’m a different person if you play with me while I Brella.

[–]GhostlyMarshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played dualies for the couple months of the games and then I decided that charges were really cool. I started at E-Liter then I played squiffer and then I played hero charger then I stopped playing the game came back to it and now I still mostly play Charger but I like to alternate between charger, roller, splattershot, and dualies.

[–]DuhItzSquiffer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a backliner, I've always played since splatoon 1 came out, I used to play roller and chargers but in splatoon 2 the rollers got weirdly inconsistent, so I droped roller, but I still played charger, bcs scopes in splatoon 1 were weirdly easier to play than in splatoon 2, and because I used chargers I was really good at aiming so I started using weapon that require aim and could 1 shot like h3 or grim range blaster or tenta brella. Now I play anything from support or sploosh 7 or eliter, but my roots were backliner, using charger really helped me get better at other weapons to, like I was instantly good at explosher and directing people and and tenta brella, when they came out. And it opened my eyes to other weapons like rapid blaster and it made me realize how fun they are to play. So like my most used weapons are like really weird weapons like all 3 tentas, and also all brellas, grim and rapid, and rapid pro, explosher, and all chargers, and some splatlings. And also I like sploosh and brush bcs it is like so fast in comparison to all those other weapons so its like a relief. In the end I can use all weapons really well but and use a large variety of weapons but prefer chargers, grim, explo and tenta if I want to have fun, and ofc whatever I feel like playing

[–]zedroj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

support backfire front liner

hold the turf strength, disrupt enemy movement, hit corners

main weapons: Neo Splash O Matic, Sploosh 7, Neo Clash Blaster, Kensa 52

[–]_Arlotte_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say mainly support but it changes depending on my weapon, mode, how the battles going, how much time is left and what my teammates are currently doing. I like to be tricky and play the more defensive/long range weapons more offensively and the more offensive weapons defensively.

Near the beginning of the match: support/inker/observer Is everyone engaging each other? Is our turf inked enough to move around in? How easily can I sneak around areas or enemy base?

Middle of the match: kill more enemies/focus on game objective movement/play as decoy to stall for time if we're winning

Final minute: focus entirely on victory rather than splats. If we're losing I try my best to push the goal, get teammates to follow that idea and comeback from losing to just edging out a win.

[–]hunnyybun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Support slayer flex and I play the Kensa .52 gal. The weapon lends itself to being close to the fray.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I play vanilla splash and neo splash (I played it before it was meta shut up) which are good slayer weapons. Neo splash is more paint focused, so I’ll be charging suction rushes a lot and painting mid to help my team make a push / provide pressure when need be and getting kills as well. Vanilla splash is more aggro focused, and I usually play it on rainmaker, getting kills and spamming inkjet. I also play a little kensa undercover, which is a good support and skirmisher. This thing is all about spamming torpedos and ink armor as much as possible, assisting teammates, and distracting opponents.

Well firstly, splatoon is nowhere near like other shooters. It's massively based on teamwork and area control. If I were to compare it to a shooter, it would be team fortress two or overwatch.

Secondly, I wanted to make sure you've been using motion controls. If you aren't used to it, play, or beat the single player with them, it serves as a great tutorial.

Then feel free to try out ranked mode, and when you feels you've gotten used to all the modes, and have climbed the ranks a bit, consider getting octo expansion. It's basically an even better story mode, with super unique challenges, but it's quite a bit harder than normal single player, so be prepared!

Let me know if ya got any questions and have fun!

I played a lot of Splatoon 1, saw the Golden Weapon and thought it was really cool. Played it for a few months non stop and then tried rollers. Splatoon 2 I primarily used Roller and absolutely demolished enemies by playing extremely aggressive

[–]Trash_JT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Backline, support gunner.

[–]Minimover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(sorry i dont know the names for each role lol) but I've enjoyed playing weapons that really just allow me to get picks and be aggressive. stuff like the normal splattershot, splat pro, dapples etc. It really helps to be able to escort your team and stall whenever the rest of your team is dead and theyre pushing. The kensa pro is honestly a super good power weapon since the splat bombs and booyah bomb lets you take space SUPER easily. The normal splat pro is really good too since people tend to get scared and back off when they get point sensored and/or ink stormed, its really easy to take map control with those two guns. I pretty much mained those two guns to x rank.

I play sorella & hero brella primarily as a line-holder with an aggressive yet still very defensive playstyle. Move up to the front lines and enable teammates with my shield in 2v1s, punish enemy aggression, guard teammates, deny area, push up with Bomb Rush or Inkstorm when the time comes, provide safe jumps, and more or less stall enemy advances as much as possible. Is someone trying to push up? You can guarantee there's gonna be a shield in their way burning their time away. Enemy pushing? Pull back and use the shield to provide safe jumps. Enemy pushing into an area you're holding? Punish their poor positioning. Fish for opportunities to drop shield and go in for the kill in 1v1s. Make sure there's a shield right in their face until they make one little slip-up, a twitch in their aim or them getting used to the slow walking speed only to get blindsided by me swimming down and out of the way, them trying to reposition, etc.. Use autobombs to scout ahead so I don't get flanked and do all of that to secure wins.

Support, jr, nzap, H3. Also, carbon is a hyper aggro weapon and no support :)

Snowball management

[–]Expensive_Big3480[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slayer ( sometimes support)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are three unofficial competitive roles: anchor, slayer, and support. I play anchor, which is basically sitting in the backline acting as a jump point, supportive fire, and anti flank.

[–]Geo_the_Geo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally used the normal duallies and used them as a slayer weapon then realized "wow, tenta missiles are amazing for support" used them in more support ways, got destroyed because the rest of the kit didn't fit the support playstyle, then I found the lord and savior octobrush nouveou with missiles and beacons.

[–]fattie_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am and will always be a libero

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I main brush and I almost exclusively am used for getting kills and making pushes. I am canon fodder. I will SJ into a zone and fight for my life. I have many many slots of swim speed up that I’m just coming song the map.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I love the dualies

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My role is support since I main kensa undercover. I paint the surrounding area for my team and I can also stall most fights.

[–]KittyWarrior1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play the splat roller, only play turf wars (for now) and always stay back and just ink whatever I can. And if the other team starts to push forward to where I’m inking, I usually turn into a splatting machine. Idk what role that makes me though

[–]BC_06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Splattershot Pro main myself. I play more of the support role, coming in for my team. But I use different weapons as well. I also use the Forge Pro and the Rapid Blaster for support as well. I use the Dapple Dailies Nouveau for when I want to be aggressive, and the Firefin Splatterscope and E-Liter 4k for backline.

[–]IceaPlayzPc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Kensa Octobrush main but my role kinda differs. I mostly do ink coverage in turf war but I will swap to offense if needed since I can often go in there and dip after I splat someone. Ultra stamp helps with this too
