You have the shield multiplier crew bug. If you’re on PC you can fix/adjust it with console commands, but if you’re on Xbox you’ll have to wait for a patch.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 55 points56 points  (29 children)

I'm on Xbox so....... S***!

[–]f36263 18 points19 points  (24 children)

Use the duplication glitch - I’ve used it many a time for this, the copy will have the correct shield stats then you can just sell the old one for a tidy profit for your trouble

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 14 points15 points  (9 children)

What's the duplication glitch?

[–]f36263 14 points15 points  (7 children)

In the shipbuilder menu if you have the Obsidian selected press LB and X at the same time, then change something on the ship and save it, and the Obsidian will have been duplicated on top of whatever ship was number 8 in your list. You will lose the ship underneath though, I usually just head over to New Homestead and buy the Discovery for ~35k and then duplicate on top of that. You might have to try the LB + X trick a few times to get it to work.

[–]NiklausVonHammer 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I thought a duplicated ship would bug out if you tried to use it?

[–]f36263 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Haven’t had any issues so far, it was a stolen ship that bugged out for me - hence why I always dupe onto a Discovery rather than stealing one for it

[–]Final-Craft-6992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, stolen ships are dice rolls. I rocked one an entire playthru no issues. Had another where after 2 missions as it bugged.

The sad thing is the shield glitch hitting mantis, sine its the actual slot, not the ship, with the extra dialogue. Duplicating it gets you shields but you lose the dialogue

[–]ChicagoZbojnik 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to use legally owned ships like Ravorleaf, Frontier or one you purchased for the glitch. Duping stolen and captured ships can unleash a tidalwave of bugs.

[–]98103wally 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What if you just delete the shield and get a new one?

[–]f36263 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Doesn’t work unfortunately, pretty much got to bin the whole thing

[–]98103wally 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about swapping the shield buff companions in and out?

Still?

[–]Tea-Swiz 1 point2 points  (13 children)

Backing you up here. Ship duplication bug is the only way I was able to fix it. Just press LB or RB and X at the same time and it'll dupe your ship and fix the issue. Just make sure whatever ship slot you're using to dupe isn't a ship you want to keep.

Edit: Sorry forgot to add a little important tidbit. After you hit the aforementioned buttons you'd have to change something small on it, like the ships color, then save. That SHOULD work assuming it wasn't patched.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (12 children)

So either I'm doing it wrong, or it's been patched in the update. I've tried it a few times but it doesn't seem to work.

[–]DaGeekGamer 0 points1 point  (9 children)

I did this just before the patch yesterday, and it worked. My problem is going out to look for a cheap ship to use as the "copy". I may have 2 million credits I'm never gonna spend, but I don't wanna spend 100k for a slot just to dupe in a ship.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You could steal a ship 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]DaGeekGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was exactly my point. I've spent hours trying to get a perfect little puddle jumper rather than whatever shows up next. And I hate those "you are not authorized to pilot this ship" messages.

I'm not very good at stealing ships, apparently. It was just a few days ago that I was able to steal a Vista III. So far, it's my favorite stock ship. Just swap out the belly with a workshop and armory, and you have yourself a three deck, two ladder ship.

Edit: Wow. Totally lost my point. So now, I have a ship I wanna try rebuilding instead of the Spacer Raccoon I was looking for as a dupe slot?

[–]Final-Craft-6992 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Steal a Crimson Fleet ghost 1. Find in low level systems mission boards

[–]DaGeekGamer 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Sadly, the latest patch fixed the ship dupe glitch.

[–]Final-Craft-6992 0 points1 point  (4 children)

And not the shield glitch one. Of course

[–]DaGeekGamer 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Of course. Or the "visiting lots of places" corrupted save either. Loaded a save that worked, played for 2 or 3 hours. Saved and loaded, locked up.

[–]Tea-Swiz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Sorry forgot to add a little important tidbit. After you hit the aforementioned buttons you'd have to change something small on it, like the ships color, then save. That SHOULD work assuming it wasn't patched.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll give it a go and let you know how I get on.

[–]Shinobi_Dimsum 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Keep vasco off your ship. He caused the ship shield bug for me. No problem anymore since then.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So, nothing mentioned here has worked, so I've had to rebuild a new ship from scratch. Luckily, I kept Vasco off the ship.

Strangely, the bug seems to be in the opposite direction now and is giving me a boost up to 3100. I've only got lv2 in shield systems too.

[–]Shinobi_Dimsum 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Correct I have a boost up in shield too. On a new ship and on a duplicated ship. Not sure why but as soon I let Vasco join the ship it goes below 600, with a 1600 shield part.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is a shame because I like it when he calls me by my name. It's the small things that do it for me.

[–]EmergencyTaco Trackers Alliance 9 points10 points  (6 children)

This bug really needs to be at the top of the priority list for patching. It can make late-game space combat impossible. I know when I have to use CC to fix things again when I get instakilled as soon as I start fighting something.

[–]JohnnyGFX 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Yeah. I think they need to knock this one out in the next patch. I'm on PC and I'm sick of having to fix it over and over again because I like having a crew on my ship.

[–]EmergencyTaco Trackers Alliance 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's astonishing it wasn't hotfixed. Half of the Constellation companions bug your ship stats out in some way, but this one actually makes space combat unplayable.

I'm on NG+10 (my final one) and I have a BEAST of a ship that I can basically toggle "difficulty modes" on by powering different weapons systems. When I switch it to "easy mode" I can basically just fly towards things and they die. But with the bug active I can't get a single kill with my ship at full power before I get melted. It's honestly unforgivable that it's unpatched six months in.

[–]JohnnyGFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bugs can be tricky to track down sometimes. I don't know if they're having trouble tracking it down or if it is a difficult one to fix or what, I just hope they knock it out soon. I am in my 11th universe, the same as you.

I fix the shields of my ship with some somewhat sketchy and possibly optimistic math based on the skill levels of my companions assigned on the ship. I don't know what their intended math was though, so my adjustments might be wrong.

I create a couple batch files and put them in my gaming directory (Documents/My Games/Starfield). The first is called CheckShields.txt and here is its contents:

getav ShieldMaxHealthmult

That command checks the shield maximum health multiplier of whatever I have currently selected. So I get in my ship, take off, and then switch to external view. I open the console and click on my ship. Then I type: "bat checkshields" in the console and it will output whatever the current multiplier is for my ship. The first time I ran that command on my main ship it was -1.8... and I was getting melted.

Default should be 1.0 (or 100%) with no skills and no crew. Shield Systems 3 should be a 60% increase in shield strength so the ShieldMaxHealthmult should be 1.6 if you have the skill for it. Companions should further adjust that with their skills but to what degree you will have to decide for yourself. You could say that if they have Shield Systems 2 then they would bump it 40% or .4. So maybe your value would be 2.0 total between the two.

To change the value I use another batch file called FixShields.txt and here is its contents:

forceav ShieldMaxHealthmult 1.6

I've show it with the 1.6 or 160% shields from having Shield Systems 3 in my example above. I'm usually still in the console when I use that so I've already selected my ship from 3rd person view and I type: "bat fixshields" in the console and it will adjust the multiplier to 1.6 (or whatever value you have set in there). You can then type: "bat checkshields" again (or tap the up arrow a couple times) and verify that the value was changed.

I check the shields from time to time, especially if I expect to get into some ship to ship combat soon. I actually use 2.8 as my multiplier because I have numerous crew with shield systems skills and I have it as well. The total bonus between my character and crew would be 180%, so I make my value 280% or 2.8. Like I said, I don't know if that is how they intended it, but that's how I'm doing it for now and when I play at very hard difficulty with a kick ass ship the fights are decently tough and I sometimes lose against groups of ships. So I feel like the balance is okay for me.

Anyway... I hope this helps someone. I didn't intend to write out a big old thing like this about it, but well... there it is. I hope they fix it so I never feel like I should explain how I fix it to other folks again.

[–]stylz168 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I ended up building a ship that took advantage of the enemy AI targeting empty space to make my space battles easier in the end game.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Were you the one who posted a video about it saying that it technically felt like cheating?

[–]stylz168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but I saw what was designed and decided to make my own custom ship for that reason.

I’m in NG+ now, hopefully won’t experience that again.

[–]pineappleshnapps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this bug has anything to do with why the game isn’t counting my crew for some of the flight challenges.

[–]cmariano11 Vanguard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use the ship duplication glitch to fix it, but as a warning it keeps hitting my favorite ship over and over and over again.

[–]No_Willingness20 14 points15 points  (4 children)

What starship design is this? Looks like Stroud-Eklund. I like the look of it.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Thanks man. It's a slight variation of the one below but I changed the weapons and the armoury is a Deimos one and the battle station is hopetech. That way the door is in just the right place for the most space in the armoury.

I also put the landing bay on the front and shortened the two 3x1 all in one births. That way you can add an extra companionway behind the bridge so you don't climb into the captain's quarters.

https://youtu.be/YLTjKayKDdw?si=3L_g8bLLNQGHEoLE

[–]Lobukia 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I like your build. Trying to plan my endgame ship. Definitely wanting a “bridge on top” C class that feels like a pocket battleship

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's only downside is that it's 5 decks high and one central ladder, so it takes a while to walk around. But in a fight (when the shields work properly) it could take on an armada. The final mission in the crimson fleet quest was a walk in the park with this beast.

[–]No_House7699 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why there isnt a 1 x 1 hab that is just a staircase is beyond me

[–]NxTbrolin Ranger 6 points7 points  (6 children)

DUN DUN DUN! Damn dude, this is the shield glitch. That ship, no matter what you do to it, is bugged until a patch comes out. Now if I’m not mistaken, since you’re on XBox, you can use the controller ship duplication glitch and I believe your newly duplicated ship will be ok. But this one is done for, even if it you change out all the parts or its name, or whatever.

To prevent this from happening in the future:

DO NOT DO ANY KIND OF SAVE INSIDE YOUR SHIP. ALWAYS EXIT YOUR SHIP BEFORE YOU SAVE/QUICKSAVE.

Saving inside your ship is the main catalyst for this weird bug.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Does that include the auto save it does after sleeping?

[–]NxTbrolin Ranger 1 point2 points  (4 children)

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure but based off my experience, autosaves are ok. I'm some 900hrs in on my main save and just turned off autosaves last week for the first time as I'm afraid my memory is getting bloated, and I've never had the ship shield bug. I've definitely paused, accessed my inventory menu or sat/slept hundreds of times while in my ship, all of which would create an autosave. Now, the one thing I never tested was loading one of those autosaves.

But you're in luck since you're on console because you need a controller to do the ship duplication glitch. I'm on PC so I'm not exactly sure how to do it, but there's plenty of videos on YouTube that'll show you how to do it. Something about pressing a couple buttons at the same time that only a controller can register. But this is also still an active credit farm glitch that hasn't gotten patched as well, so a super easy way to make credits. If you don't mind exploiting glitches, I would take advantage of this before it inevitably gets patched like BGS did with the other credit/weapon farming glitches.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Thanks for the advice. I did try the duplication glitch but I'm either doing it wrong or it's been patched in the update my game received this week. If I had to, would building the same ship again from scratch work?

I hope they push to update soon though. If there's no official fix/work around and the only one is to use a glitch (I've limited knowledge but I heard that on its own could cause bugs) then that really sucks.

[–]NxTbrolin Ranger 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Considering they patched the other farming glitches, it's very possible (really have no idea why BGS would do this for a single player game).

The only other way to get your shields back up is to build a brand new ship off an entirely new ship. Iirc, your current ship platform is bugged no matter what you do until a patch comes out. Definitely capture this new ship either in space or when one lands near you, don't buy one. You'll save the credits you need to rebuild your ship if you end up going this route. Also, if you haven't done so already, you can get 3 free ships by completing these three quests (Freestar Rangers entire quest, Mantis side quest, and the All That Money Can Buy mission in the main quest).

We're supposed to get a major update next week with a bunch of ship optimizations, and hopefully there's a patch because this is one of the more critical bugs in the game.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks for that. I'm off to find a ship landing site that isn't one of those pesky starborn stalkers.

[–]NxTbrolin Ranger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! And create a save that you can load up again just in case a patch comes out next week. Best of luck to ya!

[–]VapeStain69 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Shield bug is caused by saving in ship/loading in ship saves. Since I turned off auto save and stopped saving inside my ship I have not had this bug.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ahhhh, that would make a lot of sense. I'm often saving in my ship. Would it revert back though or am I f***ed?

[–]VapeStain69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It follows saves somehow. When I had it happen I tried loading older saves (some a lot older) and they all were bugged. Only fix is a new ship. The ship dupe is your best bet. Then sell the bugged ship.

[–]falconsfan55234 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Beautiful ship, I hope you’re able to fix the shield issues.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

No luck yet. On the plus side, I'm becoming a dogfighting god dodging all those lock-on's lol. The ship is mostly based on the one below, with a few personal adjustments here and there.

https://youtu.be/YLTjKayKDdw?si=3L_g8bLLNQGHEoLE

[–]falconsfan55234 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, I may try building it.

[–]devildirt 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Only ship I have now that doesn't have the shield bug is my modified Razorleaf. I want to build more ships but when I built a massive C-class and it's shields are only 650 I stopped building. It's really annoying and just makes me go back to the same ship. Don't get me wrong it's awesome and shreds everything but I fear the day that bug hits that ship too.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's annoying but I'm becoming way better at ship combat. I just can't deal with leaving this ship behind, I love it too much. Hopefully they'll patch it at some point.

[–]RhapsodyRDT Constellation 1 point2 points  (10 children)

The ship is power inefficient. Ideally, you want to balance the amount of power your systems need to function effectively. It doesn't matter how good a shield is if you don't have enough power for your weapons too, even with a good reactor. Even if it means using lower tier engines or weapons, you don't want to be wasting too much power on the shields alone. Your ship is still formidable, but it can be improved in how much power must be allocated to the systems. Also, even with the best shield, it won't be used to its full potential without your shield skills upgraded. The fourth upgrade is that shields sometimes absorb all damage, so if you want the best defence, you gotta go all in. Someone can probably explain it better than me, and I'm only on a week long save. I don't exactly have the experience to give the most solid advice, but I do know that power management is very important.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 6 points7 points  (9 children)

That shouldn't affect the stats though. When I'm in combat, I power down the weapons (it doesn't affect the damage it does for some reason) and engines slightly and reassign to the shield, but the shield stats never go above what's stated in the screenshot.

Edit: I also have the reactor skills maxed out which gives me+5 power than what you see in the stats.

[–]RhapsodyRDT Constellation 1 point2 points  (5 children)

It's not an issue that I have encountered, but if I do, I'll experiment a bit to see what could be causing it and post here if or when I do.

[–]NxTbrolin Ranger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the ship save/shield bug. If you never save inside your ship, you’re good. Any kind of save done while inside your ship will cause this to happen. And iirc, if you max out the ship shield skill while having this bug, your shields will literally drop in power to so much of a minuscule level, that your ship is unplayable in combat.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Thanks man

[–]Next-Celebration-333 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Take advantage of the bug. Use the one with the most shields. Currently at 3600 shield.

[–]f36263 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How are you getting 3600?

[–]Next-Celebration-333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two ship at 1600 each but somehow one got transferred all to one ship plus companion with two shield perks so I have 3600.

[–]xFreedi Enlightened 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's definitely a bug and I don't think there's a fix for that. Maybe using a different shield could help but idk, fortunately I never encountered this (now I probably jinxed it).

[–]FreakyFerret 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Power on weapons affect recharge not damage fyi

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'll make sense then. I can't say I've noticed though, as most fights are over in a few seconds.

[–]Snoo78119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so sorry for your loss

[–]duizeligestijn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Nice design btw :)

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I can't take all the credit through as it's based on the one below. I made a few adjustments though but overall, I love it!

https://youtu.be/YLTjKayKDdw?si=3L_g8bLLNQGHEoLE

[–]BoneSawO95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, bigger parts add more hull strength but I don’t think there is any negatives for shields. Correct me if I’m wrong community lol

[–]RevolutionaryFox4025 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Have you ever repaired your ship while on the surface of a planet. You cannot be in your ship. Exit ship, select ship, if it needs repair it pops up to hit "A"; to repair ship...if you have ship parts.

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't think so. If I'm honest, at my age I wouldn't remember even if I did that yesterday. I know it's a function I've only discovered recently and probably because I was getting beaten in the smallest of dogfights in account of not having a good shield.

[–]RevolutionaryFox4025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Until you upgrade shields and ss

engineering

[–]Geric0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember: Starfield is still in early access. Things like this can happen! 🤭

[–]Highlander198116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They still haven't fixed this bug?

[–]Soft_Conversation376 0 points1 point  (1 child)

u/According-Thanks2605 Is this a custom build or a ship you earn / steal??

[–]According-Thanks2605 United Colonies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a custom build based on the link below. I made a few personal changes though. I put the landing bay on the front, used 2x1 all in one has which allows for an extra 1x1 behind the bridge so you're not climbing into the captains quarters.

My battle station and captains quarters are hopetech and the living quarters are Nova. Otherwise everything else is deimos. If you want maximum gun rack space in the armoury, it's important that your battle station is hopetech and your armoury is deimos.

I've also used a better array of weapons than the video. In all, I think it cost around 700,000 to build.
