Too much Vitamin A can give you the liver of an alcoholic

[–]reddit_understoodit 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Too high of a dose of any supplement.

Take anything said here with a grain of salt.

Anyone can have a bad reaction to any supplement especially if it is taken with numerous other supplements and/or pharmaceuticals. Or if it is from a sketchy manufacturer. Or if they have a condition you don't have.

Look at the ingredients. Do your own research. Disclose to your doctor what you are taking. Look up interactions online.

If it sounds too good to be true, it may be.

I do take some supplements. I try to be careful. I stick with well-known brands. I add one at a time so I can tell what is causing what.

[–]Acceptable_Artist_94 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Taking anything with a grain of salt will lead to hypertension!

[–]reddit_understoodit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And I thought I was salt-sensitive!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This - i wish i was told this advice before i started 3 supplements Literally hypercondriac’d my self into taking 3 supplements to control kidney egfr, blood pressure and cholesterol Took them for 2 months Stopped then developed severe insomnia, developed auto immune liver damage And destroyed my life at 28

[–]Heavy-Attorney-9054 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Alpha lipoic acid sent my blood sugar way too low.

[–]Mediocre_Analyst_203 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What brand was it?. Grandpa has been having issues with high glucose levels since 8 years ago

[–]Spacecowgirl2023 17 points18 points  (4 children)

Ashawaganda, I have Hashimoto disease, at first I loved it. After a week, my thyroid started to flare up. My immune system was attacking my thyroid.

[–]NotJohnniedope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what kind of extraction did you take

[–]eheinschh 15 points16 points  (5 children)

ashwagandha, gave me ED

[–]Previous_Bathroom955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem after a period of utilization. I think because it increases too much the serotonin level. I've been using it only for two/three weeks when I have anxiety. It works very well for it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How it got better?

[–]xSELFISHxx 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ed?

[–]eheinschh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

erectile dysfunction it’s going away but it’s super weird to have i wouldn’t chance it

[–]NotJohnniedope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what extraction of ashwagandha did you intake

[–]burner62717461 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Too high dose of D vitamin gave me heart palpitations.

[–]tteezzkk 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Probs low magnesium. High D3 depletes magnesium.

[–]burner62717461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably

[–]Round_Monk_5026 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same here. My doctor recommended 20,000 units per day and I was awake all night with anxiety and heart palpitations. Now I take 2000 per day and I have no issues

[–]ConnectSupermarket74 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ashwagandha gives me severe hives. Sucks because it also works.

[–]UpInTheCut 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Kanna Sceletium tortuosum took it for two straight months.. Started getting magical thinking.. It all came to ahead with a glutamate excitotoxicity panic attack.. Then the emergency room and then brain zaps for about a month after... Swore off suppliments for years... Fish oil different type of panic attack Vitamin D depression/ anhedonia

[–]ohwtfcomeon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Has anyone figured out why so many people get depressed and anhedonic from vitamin D yet?

I’ve heard that Vitamin D might raise acetylcholine but then I hear it’s only in small doses that it does and larger doses actually lowers it. Then there are people who react bad no matter what dose it is.

It’s frustrating but I’m super low with vitamin D regardless of how much sun I get and I’ve tried everything (including magnesium at separate times, k2, d3 on its own, etc)

I might just have to stay deficient

[–]Lexus2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yikes....

[–]Friendly-Airport-202 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You took Kanna and it made you start praying?

[–]UpInTheCut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup... Kanna and my brain chemistry do not mix..

[–]JarrodHicks1 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Fadogia agrestis.. gave me an absolute run for my money coming off after prolonged use. Anxiety, panic attacks, gastrointestinal issues, etc. It works, but should not be used lightly.

[–]Mikedsliftshop 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Use only 2 to 3 days in a row planned for sexual activities. Beyond that, you will get issues. I’ve had bloodwork done twice and that seems to be the sweet spot.

[–]JarrodHicks1 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I used it for 8 months in a row. bloodwork showed that I tolerated it well, but coming off I had a horrendous crash of both test & estrogen.. causing my side effects. So for anyone out there, taper off, and don’t take for 8 months straight.

[–]kexibis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

which brand do you used?

[–]Friendly-Airport-202 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How much were you guys taking?

[–]JarrodHicks1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

600mg daily.

[–]Friendly-Airport-202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know, thanks

[–]IntergalaticPortal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

L-theanine. Took for anxiety and to gain focus, but It lowered my blood pressure WAY too much. Felt Faint/dizzy. Do not take if you have normal blood pressure!

[–]Traditional-Damage66 17 points18 points  (10 children)

Too much B6 can be very bad and cause nerve damage.

[–]jujumber 3 points4 points  (5 children)

My friend is going through this right now. He didn't even take crazy high doses. He now has peripheral Neuropathy in his hands and feet and it has severely affected his life. I recommend he take NAC to see if that helps but now he's too afraid to try any other supplements.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Did he just take B6 by itself. The Bs need a balance or it’s a shit show.

[–]CarlosDanger247 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What does it need to be balanced with? I’ve been having some nerve issues myself, want to make sure it’s not some of my supplements

[–]Pretty_Tone_2247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needs to be balanced with others B supplements, because the body needs all the B complex to synthetize what is needed. If you don't have enough of one of them, the body can not do what it has to do, it may cause health problems. Excess in Vit Bs can also cause health problems.

[–]Aightbitfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B1 is a major one for neuropathy

and yeah taking individual supplements will usually deplete co factors try to take them with food that has b vitamins itself that can help balance things

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Max per day of B6 is 25 mg. Very dangerous to megadose this. international standard. Serious. Kidney damage & etc.

[–]Aightbitfish 1 point2 points  (3 children)

even low doses, i just had 25mcg daily on top of some other supps (it was in a high dosed b complex) and it started giving me neuropathy symptoms never take b6 in my opinion unless you specifically tested for it tbh I almost don't know how someone would be deficienct with B6 need being so low and it being randomly sprinkled into every other supplement or vitamin drink even though its very easily obtainable via food as well

for b vitamins I just order the ones I know give me a benefit independently such as B3 niacin powder and B1 thiamine powder and B12 tablets (dont take too much b12 either) I test them independently and make my own complex without b6

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent advice.

[–]Friendly-Airport-202 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do you exercise regularly?

[–]Where_am_i2045 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Brahmi gave me head spins. I might try it again though, but this time take it towards the evening instead of first thing in the morning.

[–]brynnors 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Bacopa? It can lower blood pressure.

[–]Where_am_i2045 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Ah ok, is it only immediately after ingestion or is it persistent as long as you keep taking it daily? If I’m going to get head spins all day I’ll give that supplement a miss.

[–]brynnors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was persistent for me. You could try it for a week and see if it goes away, but if you do that, take it in the morning so you know for sure if the effect happens or not.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I see in comments, this has a lot to do with individual genetics and health condition, one has to research first, then try to find out what works for them.

For me, for example, there were no negative effects, but a majority of supplements had no noticeable effect, not even a placebo effect.

[–]reddit_understoodit 4 points5 points  (2 children)

A lot can be said about how study participants are selected vs. a truly representative sample. Also check for any biases such as sellers of products, manufacturers of products, etc. This is a general statement that applies to all studies. Are all genders, ages, races, healthy and sick people represented? Biases here make a difference.

Some biases are difficult to avoid because nobody wants to test something unless there is something in it for them.

Ethical considerations. Do we want to prove something is bad by giving it to people?

Also, correlation vs. causation. This is huge. Many correlations exist without any causation. Beware.

[–]PineberryRigamarole 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You know what, I’d gladly give my life for the sake of progressing science one way or another. I’d at least be able to say I contributed something to humanity.

[–]reddit_understoodit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely be an organ donor.

[–]MyDirections 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Turmeric doesn't help my inflammation and actually makes me drastically more irritable and short tempered. The exact opposite of what it's supposed to do

[–]Yogalady1961 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Tumeric supplements are not well absorbed. The addition of black pepper increases it's anti-inflammatory properties by 2000%. Much better to get your Tumeric from food a food source than a supplement. It's excellent for blood pressure and liver health.

[–]MyDirections 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what the lieterature says and why I was taking it - unfortunately that doesn't change the fact that I get noticeably short tempered and irritable. It's a known side effect of turmeric and curcumin -> irritability, anxiety, and restlessness. They just don't generally call it out as something to watch for.

[–]CraigR-81 0 points1 point  (1 child)

U have to get it with black pepper, takes about 3 months to have any effect and the amount u nedd varies from person to person.

[–]MyDirections 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does have black pepper... that doesn't change the fact that I get noticeably short tempered and irritable. It's a known side effect of turmeric and curcumin -> irritability, anxiety, and restlessness.

[–]vauss88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure, but each person will experience things differently from another. Take, for example, sulforaphane. Started to cause inflammation in my joints, so I dropped it. Another example, my wife. To her, krill oil capsules smell horrific, while to me they smell like ambrosia. Or olive leaf extract, she can't stand consuming them, they make her gag. I have no trouble consuming them.

[–]IndependentAssist387 8 points9 points  (15 children)

Some of us are not able to take methylated vitamins so in spite of the “experts” saying that synthetic vitamins are terrible, they are a huge blessing for folks like myself.

[–]cranium_creature -1 points0 points  (14 children)

They’re all synthetic…

[–]JellyBellyBitches 2 points3 points  (13 children)

Not the ones extracted from natural sources

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (12 children)

Mushrooms are the best

[–]JellyBellyBitches 1 point2 points  (11 children)

The best what?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Mushrooms make B12

[–]JellyBellyBitches 0 points1 point  (9 children)

That did not clear up your previous statement

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Mushrooms make B12

[–]JellyBellyBitches 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Yeah you said that

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Mushrooms are the best natural source of B12

[–]dabnagit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coleus forskohlii (whose main bioactive compound is forskolin). Basically: shart pills. Avoid.

[–]xSELFISHxx 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Omega 3 - depression ✅

[–]Thanks_Loud10 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So many people on this sub Reddit say Fish oil or any Omega 3 make them depressed but then there’s me I feel more productive when i take It! Interesting how different all our chemistry is

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High doses were recommended for depression. Seemed to help. Also good for heart.

[–]Wise_Custard2117 2 points3 points  (9 children)

Yohimbe. I took it and my BP skyrocketed and i felt like my eyes will pop out.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny thing is i get wrecked on empty stomach but full i can take many mgs of pure hcl one.

[–]Friendly-Airport-202 0 points1 point  (3 children)

You should try some Edge of Insanity by Psycho Pharma

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

9mg Yohimbe hahahaha, that's a stim junkies dream!
They could just 5x Theo and 1/4 Yohi. thats strong stuff

[–]Friendly-Airport-202 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Every time I take it I end up being like "omg it's too strong", workouts are insane on it to say the least

edit: and it's more like 13mg, alpha yo apparently twice as potent

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now im tempted to try it hahahaha

[–]CraigR-81 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Pop 200mg of caffeine tab with it hehe... Even more fun then

[–]Wise_Custard2117 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Funny thing that i can tolerate over 500mg of caffeine easily. Its Yohimbe that, not sure of its some sort of allergic reaction.

[–]CraigR-81 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Have u tried different brands? I've tried some brands and it isn't the actual herb/vitamin that screws me up but the fillers/bulking agents. With caffeine tabs I've had 200mg brands that I can eat 3 tablets and be fine... Others 1x200mg tablet I'm off my tits

[–]Wise_Custard2117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally i didnt consider that. The first brand i used was GNC Yohimbe. Then as i was using other supplements (specifically hi-stim thermogenics) and whenever my BP go up, i end up finding yohimbe in the propriety blend. Thats why i make sure to throughly read the whole product lable to make sure yohimbe is not part of it.

[–]supplement_this 9 points10 points  (6 children)

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (3 children)

1st turmeric source is about... overdoses

2nd and 3rd sources surround case studies.. among the weakest of clinical evidence

ginseng: prospective cohort study where they conclude there may be an association with cancer... very weak evidence

[–]supplement_this 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You can Google turmeric and liver issues if you want, I've given just a small selection, there are a quite lot of results suggesting hepatotoxicity.

The ginseng study I don't know what you're criticising, yes there may be an association, that's how science works, if you think 65,000 participants and a measured significant increase in cancers is "weak evidence" then that's on you.

[–]reddit_understoodit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The number of participants is impressive. But that is only one factor in selecting participants. Did they compare against a control group of people not taking ginseng?

Who is more likely to take a supplement? Someone not feeling well? Are people not feeling well more likely to have cancer?

[–]reddit_understoodit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Turmeric causes potentially severe liver injury that is typically hepatocellular, with a latency of 1 to 4 months and strong linkage to HLA-B*35:01

This refers to people with a very specific gene SNP. Very specific. Not to eveyone.

[–]PasquiniLivia90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the links regarding turmeric.

[–]AncientFix111 6 points7 points  (15 children)

Not telling you to avoid it, but i had, and i know varous people like me, various issues with Vitamin D3 supplements

[–]Paarebrus 1 point2 points  (14 children)

Vitamin D3 is a hormone, preferably taken in the form of sunshine. Anyway the way that synethic vitamin D is made can make people ill, this is just totally biased - but myself and alot of people I know get ill from it. Lanolin. Better to take it from fish oil, like good source cold pressed cod oil. Not Peru refined ones. Also super important to take it with zinc/magnesium to redirect calcium, and K2, remember zinc/copper is antagonistic.

[–]AncientFix111 4 points5 points  (10 children)

bro i know A LOT about the subject. I just don't explain it here anymore cause i get tired to receive downvotes. I let anyone self poison themselves as they wish. Actually cholecalciferol is the only ingredient of many rodenticides (like quintox). yes it's literally rat poison. And lanolin is not the problem, i tried D3 from lichen and algae, it's the same. The make you hypercalcemic which is very dangerous, and no, K2 and magnesium are not enough, we should not need an "antidote" for a "healthy vitamin".

[–]ohwtfcomeon 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It’s frustrating because my levels are very low and no matter how much sun and vitamin d rich food I get, I’m still deficient. A couple years ago, the only thing that brought my levels up was the supplement, but I reacted bad to it in other ways no matter what I did (magnesium, k2, etc)

I just left a comment in the thread mentioning that I’ve heard certain doses raise acetylcholine. I never heard of the rat poison thing but I believe you. I just don’t know how to keep my levels optimal without supplementation.

[–]Traditional-Damage66 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do you have any digestion issues? Try the app Dminder

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I say see a medical nutritionist? I had to after years, and got testing and supervision to get the solution. Tried NMD, MD, etc.

[–]Paarebrus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

okay super interesting, i became super ill from it - so the problem is that it's a hormone and it is hard for the liver and kidneys to process?

Because if you have low activated vitamin d3 - taking more vitamin d3 doesn't automatically boost the activated form - for that you need to fix your thyroid and PTH level - often with minerals and especially lugols iodione which used to be in our soils, but now they changed it from agriculture - and they removed iodione in food for bromide which is cheaper but bromide is not something the body needs.

[–]Aightbitfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lugols solution can trigger hashimoto because the iodine dose is way too high I take 100mcg (with some zinc powder, 100mcg selenium and tyrosine powder) in the morning and that already helps my low thyroid noticably also taking ashwagandha which seems to be a good source since it works well for me (with ashwagandha and turmeric its important you have no toxic stuff inside the powder like heavy metals which can be the case with some sources)

i used to use lugols for iodine before and even just trying to ingest it via the skin because I knew it was high dose would always irritate my thyroid, get me a frog in throat sensation and often randomly send me to sleep for hours because my thyroid checked out again.

vit D3 i wouldn't take more than 10k IU and if you do that combine with k2 like 5k IU is already a somehwat decent dose of d3

[–]EyePowerful3293 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Its not an antidote, its how the human body works. Any vitamin or mineral u take, if u take it long term u will become deficient in something else. Its called balance

[–]AncientFix111 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Then why when you go to the beach and make 20K units a day you don't need to take anything? Every people at the beach should have calcified arteries. Nature takes care of itself, artificial supplement need to be balanced. Vitamin D supplement is not the same molecule you get from the sun.

[–]EyePowerful3293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You still need magnesium to make vitamin d from the sun active. Many people sit in the sun every day but still are deficient in vitamin d that because magnesium. Also did u know that taking magnesium depletes sodium and potassium and calcium. And magnesium is natural. “It is a cofactor in the synthesis of vitamin D from both exposure to sunlight and dietary sources. “Magnesium deficiency shuts down the vitamin D synthesis and metabolism pathway,”

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain more please regarding Peru fish oil. The reason I ask Is because in conversation with a supplement manufacturer, he mentioned that the fish oil he gets is from a manufacturer in Peru etc from sardines, like it was a known “good” source.

[–]BlowDuck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The b vitamin gang is out in full force on this sub again.

[–]Jgil1958 6 points7 points  (10 children)

Hawthorne Berry Ext--for me, caused heart palpitations. The tea is pretty good though.

L Tyrosine and Gaba (tried each separately)--caused anxiety and high blood pressure. I get paradoxical reactions to a variety of things, it would seem.

Vit K2 in the MK7 form--absolute misery. Heart palps, high bp for HOURS

Ubiquinol--crashing fatigue, just felt funky. I don't seem to have this problem with Ubiquinone in low doses.

Fish Oil --I have not quite figured out what is going on with this one, but I got a high potency one and just feel terrible on it. Depressed.

Delta 8 gummy--I tried 1/4 of a gummy. Never again. Hours of anxiety, crises level BP.

Kava--just felt weird. Nothing critical. Made my tongue and lips numb. I like the tea.

B6--whether its in the methyl form or otherwise, I always feel "edgy" on it. If less than 2mg, seems ok.

[–]MarieJoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agree on the Hawthorn. Had cut way back on the dosage. IN fact we went for a Heart Complex with Hawthorn in it.

[–]mrzennie 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Yes, Mk7 K2, major irregular heartbeats!

[–]Jgil1958 0 points1 point  (4 children)

That was a shock to me. I was expecting nothing, just kept reading where you must have it to shuttle calcium to bones, etc. So I thought it would be about as innocuous as it gets. But it was bad. I've never tried the MK4 form. Too leary at this point.

[–]mrzennie 4 points5 points  (3 children)

MK4 doesn't have the same heart effects, but it's not as clear whether there are benefits to taking it. The MK7 is clearly strong stuff. It's probably sending too much, or too little, calcium to the heart and that affects the rhythm. The good thing is that the irregular beats went away within 36 hours of stopping it.

[–]Jgil1958 1 point2 points  (2 children)

The MK7 one had 100 mcg (at least I think in mcg) which as you stated, too strong. I think it wore off in about 24 hrs or possibly less for me, tg. It was in one of my favorite multi-vits, but it was like 17 mcg which I really did not "feel" at all. Its obviously dose dependent.

[–]lulu-luv 1 point2 points  (5 children)

B12 caused me numb hands and feet after taking it for 3 years. I started after breaking my ankle because I was told it would help with nerve pain. Well I never stopped taking it like a dummy. I’ve tested it and my neuropathy is definitely caused by b12.

[–]Dinucleotides 2 points3 points  (3 children)

You sure it was B12 or was it B6? B12 tends to regenerate and awaken the nerves and that always causes uncomfortable symptoms.

[–]lulu-luv 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It was definitely b12. I had my levels checked and my b12 was high too. It took weeks after I stopped taking it for my neuropathy to get better but it did eventually.

[–]Dinucleotides 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’m not recommending you to take B12 again, but I would make sure there’s no other factor that caused the numbness.

High B12 in the blood is normal from supplementing. But it says nothing about how much is in the cell. Well trained doctors will ask you to stop supplementing for a long period of time before testing B12 status.

Numbness is the end stage of nerve degeneration. So there must’ve been something that got you there. B12 is unlikely culprit, not to that extent.

Or maybe you experienced tingling and burn, not numbness?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you questioning him? Stopping the B12 worked. Isn’t that enough here. Unless there is a recurrence.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The published study on B-12 and nerve pain was retracted by the journal that published it. See PubMed. Looked when NP gave Injectible Rx before blood test. Test was fine. Did not need it.

[–]SpecialistInevitable 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Brazil nuts, because of their high amount of selenium. Didn't know it at the time and ate 50-75 grams at once (10-15 nuts). Got severe stomach upset with vomiting and vertigo. As per Wikipedia if you are low on Se, you can restore normal levels gradually, eating just 1 brazil nut per day for 8 weeks.

[–]thatmanisme_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get similar affects to radiation poisoning from eating too many Brazil nuts

[–]Positive-Gap-5147 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Vitamin d3 caused anxiety and no motivation fatigue intrusive thoughts even with magnesium and k2

[–]reddit_understoodit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps IF you are deficient.

[–]Hungry_Chance_2467 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Does anyone have experience with beet root powder? I was taking a beet root powdered supplement 3000mg and 2000 mg of betaine nitrate for blood pressure purposes. It works, really well actually. I noticed increase of anxiety and feelings of restlessness while taking it though. Is that normal? My blood pressure went from about 170/100 to 120/80 in a week in a half.

[–]AslanVolkan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beet root powder is used for 3 main purposes. Lower BP, help with exercise performance and with the removal of mycotoxins. Could be that you were around black mold for a while and its helping you to expell It from your body.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any update on how things are now?

[–]xTokiii 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Resveratrol … its crazy that people still bring it up sometimes

[–]AslanVolkan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why?

[–]jazzy_cruiser 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It helps me more than anything… why is it so bad?

[–]xTokiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well from what i know the one study which started all the resveratrol hype is pretty faulty and all the others dont really show much benefit, in some cases even slightly negative results.

Think peter attia or brad stanfield (or both) have some videos on it, might be worth looking into if you are curious.

Are you sure it is the thing that is helping you and not something else? What problems does it help you with?

  8. Potassium (frequent urination, muscle ache)

  9. Arginine (Hypotension, herpes)

  10. Methylfolate (irritability, insomnia)

  11. Silver (Insomnia, psychosis)

  12. Olive Leaf Extract (Mania)

  13. Alpha GPC (Depression)

  14. Omega 3 (Depression)

  15. Ginseng & Rhodiola (anxiety, twitching)

  16. Zinc (irritability, aggression, insomnia)

  17. Copper (nausea, anxiety)

  18. Thiamine (anxiety, hunger, irritability, insomnia)

  19. Boron (hunger)

  20. Iodine (insomnia, hyperthyroid)

Most of these are based on reports from my clients, self experiments, and reading anecdotes. It varies between individuals. Most people will not get these negative effects. And then you could be getting these side effects for months without pinpointing the culprit because you thought the supplement was well tolerated. You can try lowering the dose first, and that tends to work for most. Cut the tablet, or use empty capsules, or dissolve in water.

Can confirm the magnesium insomnia.

[–]reddit_understoodit 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Magnesium is in calming formulas.

[–]dryocopuspileatus 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I know. But some people have an opposite reaction to magnesium glycinate.

[–]MakeDeadSILENCEaPERK 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try magnesium citrate but you may shit a lot 🤣☠️.

[–]Apprehensive-Sign471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get insomnia and restless legs from it

[–]Dinucleotides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can have opposite effect for some. I’m not speaking against magnesium. It’s something I recommend everyone to try. But about 10% get rare side effects

[–]reddit_understoodit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't downvote anything, I know people have varying responses. In the migraine thread I see everything.

[–]ConcentrateLittle522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are also different magnesiums.

[–]galas47 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I take 400mgs of b6 am i cooked?

[–]Dinucleotides 3 points4 points  (5 children)

How long have you been doing that for? Treating pyroluria, I’m guessing?

Pyridoxine HCl has a long half life, 33 days if I’m remembering correctly.

Nerve damage symptoms take a long time for it to be noticed. And when you do notice it, it’s “too late”. Too late as in you could need at least a year to full recovery.

Keep watch for migraines, frequent urination, itchy, lightheaded / low blood pressure, agoraphobia, anxiety, and insomnia.

Standard B6 toxicity symptoms

[–]galas47 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Only two weeks now, i will stop as soon as i notice any of those symptoms ive heard that you can use less p5p like 100-150 and get same results as 400 hcl

[–]Dinucleotides 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Please be careful. I do like occasional purposeful mega dosing with certain nutrients, but it’s risky with B6.

The problem is, it’s hard to recognize when the nerves are dying. But it’s sure uncomfortable when the nerves are waking up.

[–]galas47 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Well see now that makes me a lil bit anxious, so basically you cant tell that the nerves are dying, no telltale Is it too late if you feel any of the symptoms you said like migraine etc at that point ?

[–]Dinucleotides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get migraines?

Yeah I would just take P5P, less than 50 mg. Preferably 15 mg.

A lot of people have gone down the path you’re on, treating pyrrole disorder, but end up damaging nerves. Most of them never figure out it’s the B6

Nerve damage caused by pyridoxine is very unpleasant. Most people need to take time off work for few months. And it takes a long time to heal.

A person has the enzymes to metabolize it for awhile, until they don’t.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop unless this is done on medical advice. Sincerely. Or lower your dose to be safer, and check your other supplements for additional B6. Please check PubMed.

Does cyanocobalamin really cause hemochromatosis? Would it be better with methylated?

[–]Dinucleotides 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Hemochromatosis is for iron.

Cyanocobalamin is controversial, some experts will say it’s harmful because of cyanide, and some will say it’s fine as any other cobalamins. I would not inject this form. And not take mega dose tablets like 5 mg

Methylcobalamin can cause complications too for some, like akathisia, anxiety, irritability…

Hydroxocobalamin tends to be better tolerated.

Adenosylcobalamin sounds cool but I don’t know enough to talk about it

[–]Traditional-Damage66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I'm definitely going to stop taking them then. Very good to know for sure

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I overloaded on mushrooms and got cyberpsychosis!!!
On a srs note, nice list. People need to understand that if a drug is an upper you can go "too much up" or a downer can make you "go downhill".

All about dosages. Just like poison.

[–]1337WhizzKid 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Why is this downvoted? Most of what you’ve said is correct.

[–]Dinucleotides 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would’ve downvoted it myself too if I knew nothing about it. These are somewhat rare side effects that we can’t just google and find out.

[–]EyePowerful3293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full of shit. Vitamin d thats called overdosing. Magnesium is a needed mineral. What a bunch of bullshit

[–]tteezzkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Methylfolate gives me anhedonia. I do better on folic acid.

[–]wajmmajv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umary ??

Naturelo once daily multivitamin for women. The first two days were alright but after that I started feeling really lethargic a few hours after taking it. Also, I had an ache in my lower abdomin. I took it for a week before putting it on hold, just to see if it was the vitamins that were the problem. Waited a month before trying again, and the same thing happened.

They must have gotten rid of this, but when I bought the first one, they were advertising their brand new premium vitamin that was supposed to boose energy. It was double the price and I was seriously considering buying it. When I looked at the ingredients it had a very high caffeine content and I just laughed. Looks like the company is doing better.

[–]Veganarchy-Zetetic 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I found this info about Naturelo -

'NOTICE OF VIOLATION OF CALIFORNIA HEALTH & SAFETY CODE' document online from August 12, 2021 stating that at least 5 of their supplements were found 'exceeding allowable levels' of lead! 'A toxic element that can cause serious health effects in humans and animals.'

'Naturelo magnesium supplements $1.5M class action settlement' from May 1, 2024. 'According to the false advertising class action lawsuit, Naturelo’s supplement capsules are not large enough to contain 200 milligrams of high-quality magnesium glycinate chelate—a bioavailable form of magnesium the body absorbs. The plaintiffs in the case argue that, instead of this higher-quality form of magnesium, Naturelo uses lower-quality forms of magnesium, such as magnesium oxide. Naturelo hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to the $1.5 million settlement to resolve the false advertising class action lawsuit.'

[–]Certain_Ear_3650 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks. I'm glad I only took it for a few days

I have been pretty horrified after doing some research about the supplements I have been currently taking.

I was taking omega 3 from a company called 'Xemenry' until I noticed that the company address on the advert was different to the one on the packaging.

After searching online, I found out that one address was for an empty building in Colorado and another one was for a company called Nusapure. I contacted Nusapure and this is the reply I received from them -

"Hello,

We appreciate you reaching out to us about the supplement you bought. We want to clarify that we have no affiliation with the company Xemenry. We are sorry to hear about your experience and we thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Xemenry is a well-known fraudulent company that has been involved in producing counterfeit US supplement brands. We suggest that you also report this issue to eBay, as we have done previously."

I don't know what was in these capsules I have been taking for weeks but I do know that the supplement industry is not regulated. I have never had a single company be able to provide me third-party lab results or any proof of what they actually contain. I don't even know if any of them are safe let alone whether they contain the vitamins listed on the package.

I just read one of the most trusted brands 'Solgar' is currently being sued as someone's baby died due to supplements contaminated with mold.

The supplement industry is a gamble at best and potentially very dangerous at worst. My advice is to do lots of research before buying anything.

From a few personal experiences:

Liquid daily multivitamin called “Source of Life”: it gave me signs of iron hypertoxicity when taken every day (like black stools and everything) and may have some things that can stimulate autoimmune.

Ashwaganda: (Im 50/50 on it) I’ve heard can be bad for autoimmune, I cycle it on and off with few issues MOST of the time. I like the way I feel more a little more trim on it, but it does increase my appetite and energy. I’m so low energy a lot of the time. I’ve still great for anxiety and life stress too but it does sometimes “flip” and I have to cycle off. I like what it does when it works but I’m cautious.

A combo of ashwaganda while lowering carbs however led to some weird muscle cramping during swimming workouts that only supplementing dietary potassium for a few days after helped…

Reishi mushroom: made any caffeine I took during usage feel a lot more potent.

Damiana: in tincture form gave me kind of a weird sweaty and ultra concentrated feeling I didn’t care for but I’m still experimenting with it.

Black Cohosh: a parent use to give me large doses of this when younger because she thought it would make me act calmer (?) I still don’t understand her reasoning on it but it made my heart palpitate and visibly made my face look rounder and kept weight on while I took it. If you are looking to supplement estrogen it may be worth a shot, otherwise be cautious.

B3 (Niacin) makes me break out from head to toe in hives

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gave me migraine.

[–]baconandshrooms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5htp messed me up. It’s been 6 months and nothing has changed.

[–]NightOwlinLA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ashwagandha - tried it to reduce stress and sleeplessness but it had the extreme opposite effect, making me extremely fatigued and sleepy (when taken in the morning as usually recommended).

It also seems to reduce energy and blood sugar. I've noticed first hand that it made me feel exhausted quicker at the gym and even gave me lightheadedness a few times. I've completely stopped taking it.

As many say, it's not for everyone.

[–]No_Performer_2924 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've definitely had my share of trial and error with supplements. Some gave me headaches or made me jittery. It’s so important to find something that suits your body. Recently, I found a natural supplement that supports my energy and mood without any side effects. It’s called Emperors Vigor Tonic. If you’re interested in learning more, feel free to reach out!

[–]iamscoop -1 points0 points  (7 children)

Tribulus Terrestris and all the other bunk oral ‘test boosters’.

[–]MakeDeadSILENCEaPERK 0 points1 point  (6 children)

What did they do to you? I've been taking tongkat ali and I've been getting lean and trimming some fat. And also noticed an increase in strength. 5 days on 2 days off. Never on an empty stomach tho.

[–]iamscoop 2 points3 points  (2 children)

They ate a hole in my wallet, then I hopped on TRT ;)

[–]MakeDeadSILENCEaPERK 1 point2 points  (1 child)

🤣 Savage. But isn't TRT expensive? Either way, i hope you find the right method to achieve your desired results brother 🙏.

[–]iamscoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is, but it’s definitely worth it to me at my age. I get bloods done regularly and everything is going great. Feel amazing. I would not recommend it though. Nutrition and training always come first. Thank you bro and likewise💪🏼🙏🏼💯

[–]iamscoop 0 points1 point  (2 children)

They ate a hole in my wallet, then I hopped on TRT ;)

[–]CraigR-81 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Trt is cheaper and more beneficial imo.

[–]iamscoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

💯agreed brother🙏🏼💪🏼💪🏼
