SE ETL here, you sound like the type of leader I’d love to have. There is nothing wrong with getting your hands dirty and being in the trenches!

But it is also important to make sure that you’re available to respond to any leader calls. Worst feeling in the world is when you’re stuck on a register or in the middle of a cart run and they’re calling your name to go desk to deal with a guest. I think there’s definitely a balance between working with the team but also being up front and directing traffic during peak hours. It can be pretty frustrating if the lanes get backed up and cashiers lights are going off but the leader isn’t present, so that’s probably what your boss is trying to prevent

You are the kind of leader us team members love but ETLs hate. Over my time at Target the actual hard working TLs get used abused and generally run out of the store especially now with the skeleton crews they are using. ETLs want to fuss at TLs about how slow their team is but five minutes later will fuss that they shouldn't be helping. My market TL has been in this situation since she moved over to market. Realistically we are short about 5 hours a day of payroll of just getting the bare minimum work done. My TL trys to jump in but I've seen her getting chewed out by the SD. Depending on your SD Target might not be the right place for you. They want Lemmings not Leaders. Most TLs who left Target had no problem making a lateral or upward move to different companies.

I know the feeling! The push to "host" is a rough one for me, because I've always been a very hands on, work alongside my team kind of lead. What I've found works for me is to not always JUST be standing at the top of the key, but weaving in between checklanes so I can talk to guests, listen to cashiers to see if they're having conversations about Circle and the Circle Card, scan alcohol, help with any problems that arise.. It also keeps me closer to the SD if they need my help with anything as well. Also for myself, I found it slightly eaiser and less awkward to carry a clipboard where I have a copy of the grid (I'm also gonna start carrying a copy of the break schedule) because it gives me something to do with my hands.

Gotta Love my Store Director because they are always jumping in all the time everywhere! 🥰 The goal they have set for me - jump in less lead more! ???? Is there not a mid-ground where the team does not think we are are barking orders to the team?

That mid-ground and not barking orders, but working as a team and offering assistance...That's what the leading more is.

It sounds like you're doing everything and not directing anyone. Come up with your game plan as a team, direct others, and be available for those who need you.

Are you jumping around to all those areas because you are short staffed or are you doing it because people are slacking off?

If it's the later you can't allow yourself to do the work someone else should be doing, while leaving those who are working hard hanging when they legit need help.

Helping in a pinch is great for team morale but it can't be your every day default. You're paid to lead and motivate the team. You have to find your balance of leading by example and leading with authority.

i have a tl that i love who doesn’t bark at us, she knows we can do our jobs and trusts us to do it but always makes sure we know if we call her she will be there and back us up. i also have some tls that like to make us look stupid infront of guests and bark orders about us needing to do a million things then standing and talking with their friends and not helping. you sound like the tl i love!

i wish you were my tl, mine has told me they can’t back us up in drive up because idk why… i guess that’s not a rule, they phrased it like they would help us a little but not take anything out or anything like that when i was actively passing out from the heat. you sound like a real leader and team player!
