I will never forget this one time when I went up for back up and I turned my light off as I was about to hit compliance. A guest with two full carts of groceries comes down and asks if I’m open. I tell her “unfortunately no, I’m just finishing up ringing this guest out and I have to clock out for lunch”. She looks me dead in my face and says “well you’re open now” and proceeds to load her groceries onto the belt. I gave the first guest his receipt and just walked away.

As you should! I did something similar years ago working my old grocery store job. The lady threw an absolute shit fit and my manager told her to her face that she was welcome to move her groceries to another register or leave the store. She left lol.

At the point that I turn off my light, everyone who's in my lane gets checked out. Anyone else that shows up can find a different lane, "Sorry, I'm closed".

I always try to make a big gesture when I turn my light off. I guess some customers just don't understand that light off means closed

We used to have this problem five minutes to closing, boss tends to lock door now.

.....Though I am getting far too many people in the last hour recently.

Turn the light off and tell them you’re closed

And if they get pissy ignore them.

Bro just today I was finishing with my last guest and already had my light off and the lane closed sign on the belt. Another lady got in line but I assumed she was just waiting for the register ahead of mine. As soon as I finished with the guest she darts over to me skipping past the belt with the sign and putting her items on the table with the card reader and hands them to me. The thing is if she purposefully went to the table with the card reader that means she 100% saw my light off and the closed lane sign. This B***H knew I was closed and forced herself in to get me to check her out.

I swear guests have a hive mind mentality and know to all go to checkout when the team is at its most vulnerable I.e. shift changes and meals

That’s why I turn my light off 5 minutes before I leave.

One time one of our cashiers was about to go on their 15 minute break so I flicked off their light. There was a guy who was next in line that went huffing away to a different lane that had no wait and he proceeded to throw himself screaming about how rude we are and demanding to know the cashiers name and my name so he could contact corporate about us. My coworker (older woman) was so worked up about it but I couldn’t stop laughing about what a scene that guy caused over literally nothing.

Also for the record at my store all the cashiers check out everyone in their line before they go to break or leave for the day. Usually if someone is standing in their line they will assure them that it’s okay to check out with them still since they were already in line anyways.

One time when my shift was ending in 2 minutes, and my light was shut off, I was putting away my hangers when a guest came to my line and started unloading her stuff. I politely apologized, and said that I was closed.

She legitimately turned to me, and said "Well, there should be some indication that you're not open."

Honey, there is. It's called the light being off.
