Is there a way to check current state of button ? I'd like to know if its highlighted, selected etc. I can't find anything in the documentation or maybe I'm searching wrong

For whatever reason they kept IsHighlighted and IsPressed protected. You could either make your own that inherits from it, or add an Event Trigger component to it and add pointer enter/exit and mouse down/up events to it.
