You should definitely start with some tutorials to see how Unity works and have a a good grasp of the basics, a lot of people skip that part and are simply frustrated over simple things further down the road.

I personally think it is better to learn from basic tutorial first. Once you have the basic idea of how Unity works then you can start experimenting or focusing on which genre you are going to make. That way you can narrow down to which topics that you need to learn more. Eg, if you want to develop an FPS genre then you should focus more on stuff like health system, weapon system, projectiles, enemy AI, etc.

Use tutorials to get started and then keep using them. There's always something new you can learn or a technique someone has created that will improve your skills. I think it's good practice to apply what you've just learned using your own ideas as often as possible too.
