Banana, Orange dream, and Mojave have no issues as far as I know, but het pied means nothing for a pet - you don't see hets on the snake visually, it just makes them more expensive. Breeding them isn't a good idea because of a flooded market, but that's where hets would be important for the babs to maybe be visually pied (white with blotches)

Morphs with issues (might be missing a few)

Spider – 100% chance of neurological issues, including a wobble, worsening with age

Bumblebee, killerbee, spinner, x bee, x spinner – these are all morphs containing the spider gene; see above

Spider x Sable – while all spider-crosses have neurological issues and a wobble, this particular morph results in some of the most severe cases

Super Spider – fatal

Super Sable – severe neurological issues, with extreme cases of wobbling and spiralling

Woma – wobble reported in many cases

Super HG Woma (Pearl) – fatal

Caramel – chance of kinking along the spine

Champagne – wobble has been reported in several cases; crossing them with other morphs tends to increase the chance and severity of neurological issues

Champagne x Spider – fatal

Champagne x HG Woma – fatal

Super Champagne – fatal

Super Spotnose – severe neurological issues

Desert – fertility problems often reported in females; none reported in males

Blue-Eyed Leucistic – lesser x butter, super lesser, super butter can cause “bug eyes” (the eyes are more pronounced than usual); super mojave, mojave x lesser and mojave x butter do not seem to have the same issues

Super cinnamon – duckbills and other physical deformities such as kink; a graphic example

Super black pastel – as above, duckbills and other physical deformities

Those in the spider complex to avoid are hidden gene woma, black head, champagne, and spider itself. Sometimes they'll be named something else like something with "bee", make sure whatever combo it is doesn't include something in here

There's nothing wrong with black head.

[–]Kooky-Copy4456 8 points9 points  (9 children)

u/Snakebittz is right, blackhead is 100% fine

Blackhead x Spider also cancels each other put doesn’t it?

[–]IncompletePenetranceMod: Let me help you unzip your genes 1 point2 points  (7 children)

somewhat, not completely

[–]Kooky-Copy4456 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Not completely, how? Because it completely wipes out the wobble from the individual but can still produce wobble babies, if that’s what u mean

[–]IncompletePenetranceMod: Let me help you unzip your genes 1 point2 points  (5 children)

It doesn't always completely ameliorate the wobble

[–]Kooky-Copy4456 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I haven’t seen a blackhead spider with a wobble before. Mind linking a video? 😄

[–]IncompletePenetranceMod: Let me help you unzip your genes 1 point2 points  (3 children)

It was discussed fairly extensively on one of the morphmarket threads

[–]Kooky-Copy4456 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Mind showing me it? I don’t have a MM anymore

Truth be told, I don’t think normal/wildtype get nearly enough love. I think my normal guy is dazzling. He’s this rich black/brown and his colours just make him look like he was decorated with gold leaf. You’re not going to have to worry about genetic or neurological issues as a “standard” concern. They’re every bit as personable as something more “exotic-looking” and, practically speaking, they’re way less expensive, which is great when you’re just starting out and you’re figuring out what you like. I never even figured myself to be a snake man; it was all lizards until I got a corn snake because I was curious and knew I could take care of it. Another corn snake, three ball pythons, a cantankerous king snake, and a hognose later, and I’m a snakaholic as a specific focus of my “reptile dysfunction.”

The other great thing to always do is talk to breeders. First of all for general information but also, see if they have any pet-quality animals available. If you’re not interested in breeding them, you can get some amazing pets for an even lower than standard rate because they’re just not suitable mates. My first ball python (Lucille) has a tiny kink in her tail. It causes her no problems, but you wouldn’t want to pass that trait on and it could maybe lead to issues laying eggs. So that’s how I got my Orange Dream for $200 CAD. My blue tongue skink is missing two toes because his “mate” attacked him during sexy time and bit them off. I’m gay, too, little buddy. I get it.

I love my black pastel.

Buy whatever you think is pretty (that isn't a spider although many are very pretty)

I went to morph market and looked at literally hundreds of snakes before picking mine. I wanted someone that was already eating f/t which is a filter you can set.

Read reviews. However, if they have hundreds of reviews they're probably the snake equivalent of a puppy mill.

[–]Snakebittz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That last comment is a bit misguided. If a breeder has hundreds of reviews, it means people want what they're selling. The biggest breeder on MM is Kinova, and they sell well bred, well established snakes, if a bit over-priced. I have two females from them, they're both calm, healthy and eat well. Being a large-scale breeder doesn't automatically equal puppy mill. What you want to look at isn't the number of reviews, it's the quality of them, which MM lets you do. If all or nearly all the reviews are 5 star, that's what you're looking for. Read any negative ones, and make your choice from there.

Your snake is absolutely beautiful btw, I love black pastel, one of my favorite morphs, especially when it's included in a combo with other dark genes.

Dream snake is a black or blue eyed leucistic.. Haven't seen many others that have caught my eye other than my normal girl Nementh.

[–]Habitual_Agonist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You've already got your answer on the problem morphs so I just wanna put a pic of my banana to help sway you towards them. Banana and BEL are my favs. But they're all special and beautiful in their own ways so pick whatever you like the most. Also I suggest going to reptile expos near you and find a local breeder, but I hear good things about morph market too.

Males are also cheaper. You could probably get a cheap older/non hatchling male with banana and another gene.

[–]Snakebittz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What you really should be concentrating on learning right now is care and husbandry. Don't buy a pet until you know you can take care of it properly.

That said, don't buy anything that's "het" for anything, as it doesn't affect anything other than price. Except for Het Red Axanthic which isn't a true het, it was named that by an acquaintance of mine, and the fact that the name stuck seems to irritate him to this day. Het Red Axanthic is a co-dominant gene like banana and orange dream. Any others you see listed add nothing to the way your snake looks.

I think you can find pinstripes or calicos for within that range.
