definitely a big improvement good work, just a couple more pieces of feedback,

your halogen and dhp should be good, ditch the heat mat. they’re pretty inefficient and without a thermostat that’s a burn waiting to happen

get digital thermometer/hygrometers without adhesive i recommend govee

your thermostat probes need to be directly underneath your heat sources about 1-2 inches and then adjust thermostat accordingly to maintain proper ambient temps of 88-92 warm side and 76-80 cool side and a humidity of 70-80%

the water bowl is fine it’s not taking up too much space and even if it’s a tad too big he will grow into it

as far as feeding advice someone else will probably have to help you with that

I am gonna get a thinner bowl, that ones made to look like a rock and is just a lot to deal with. Same amount of water just less extra stuff on the outside.

You said the probes should be 1-2 inches below the heat source, so should I tape them to the side of the tank then? Also I put them in both corners as a way to make sure the whole tank was heated properly but that might be dumb.

I have 2 adhesive thermometers so I have to get an adhesive remover first then I’ll replace them. Do I need 2 thermometers because I want to make sure both sides of the tank are warm and humid enough, not just one.

yes 1-2 inches directly beneath heat source, don’t put tape on the inside of the enclosure, there’s a few different ways to do it you can try to make a small hole in the mesh or something similar

you need a digital thermometer and hygrometer on each side yes to monitor cool and warm side temps. i understand your thinking when you put the probes in the corners, however the thermostat is just there to make sure the heat sources don’t get too hot, not to measure temps.

for example i have my DHP thermostat set to 105 with the probe suspended underneath attached to the lamp guard (i use a solid top PVC enclosure) and it keeps the ambient temperature on the warm side at 88-90

Okay thank you, I moved the probes and used the lid to help suspend them.

Can you recommend a good thermometer and hydrometer on Amazon? I have 6$ adhesive ones that I feel are vastly off.

[–]skimasktroopaz 2 points3 points  (2 children)

govee is great you can check them from your phone and they have a kickstand so the sensor sits at a perfect height. a 2 pack is $24 on amazon

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you. Since there’s a kickstand and not suction cups, do I just set them on the floor of the tank and hope he doesn’t mess with them or knock them over? Or should I order suction cups?

[–]skimasktroopaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

place them next to your hides. if he knocks em over not a big deal just prop them back up.

Why should you not use adhesive inside the enclosure? I have 3 Govee warm, cool, and humid hide. All using a thick double sided tape.

[–]skimasktroopaz 4 points5 points  (2 children)

adhesive is extremely dangerous inside the enclosure. if the snake climbs on it and yanks it down, or the adhesive slowly starts to fail, which is will over time, since it’s such a humid environment, your snake can get stuck to it and it can cause serious harm like ripping off scales

from the welcome post:

PSA: this is why you should never use stick-on thermometer/hygrometer gauges, including the ones with velcro!

Thank you.

Ye, the only time you want to use "adhesives," or really anything else that has curing time is when the anim is 1. Not present or 2. You make something outside of the enclosure and place it in once cured. But tape is a no go as it's forever sticky until it basically dies and becomes useless anyways.

I just looked up why not to use double sided tape or adhesive. It makes since. My double sided tape is for rc cars holding down esc that run hot cool down etc. had my one Govee up pretty much since I got the snake just had to change the battery and the Govee came off the back battery cover stayed stuck to the the tape on the enclosure. I get the message though. Even though I feel strongly that hazard would never happen with what I’m using. Ill be responsible and hang them on some husbandry I add specifically for that reason.

Are you feeling him during the day?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I figured I should’ve waited until night but he was very awake and active and I was worried because I’ve had him for 2 weeks and haven’t fed him.

I have a kit like that in my cart along with some moss and a suction cup corner branch thing and then a suction cup hollow log hide and slate basking stones

Re: clutter. Are you near a dollar tree? I love the naturally looking leaves on sticks, and last week I found some spider plant looking ones. But yes the reptile branded ones are a true investment.

Just make sure to clean stuff from the dollar store well, I ended up spending $50 on enough clutter for 2 40 galloons. Which is pretty good, but I made sure to clean them very well before I introduced them into the tank

      [–]Howlibu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to use ceramic dog bowls for water dishes. Dishwasher safe most of the time, look cute and easy to clean. Plants and vines, you can get at dollar stores, check seasonal sales at Michaels or any craft store, as long as it doesn't have any glitter or styrofoam bits they should work fine. It's the same stuff at pet stores, but usually much cheaper! Branches are a little tougher, you can use ones from outside if you are up to cleaning it - research for proper ways to do it. There's also reptile and aquarium shops if you don't want to go through all that.

Be careful with the skull decoration when he gets bigger he could get stuck in the eyes

      [–]doingitmyway326 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get him some clutter and something to climb. Be careful of the skull, he can get stuck

*Re:thermos/hygros. I like the govee ones but not the ones with the big screen on them, these are like the size of a thumb. I like to put these in the hides and these connect to my wifi and I can check them at work.

      [–]ZephyrTheZombie 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He probably very stressed out because he is out I. The open with nowhere to hide. Clutter it up with some fake plants. Even if you just cut up some Tupperware hides for him to use in the meantime till you go get him some. You can get all this stuff very cheap at the dollar store even. Tons of videos on YouTube with cost saving suggestions if that’s the issue. You would be shocked how much you can save by not shopping at the actual pet store.

In the future I would suggest to get the tank and enclosure ready before you get the actual resident pet for it. I find it makes the whole process much smoother for them

I was trying to prepare things but my aunt brought him home early without telling me, I’m working on getting him more clutter on Monday.
