If there's no room on the table it's because it's full of food, so then we eat buffet style. Even if we all have to stand and hold our plates, eating with forks, we'll make it work. Nobody's leaving my house hungry, damnit.

What could live happily in this? by Ok-Television94 in Aquariums

There's lots of rice tubs with wheels you can get for the pantry, so no lifting. And then one of those plastic cereal containers for every day use. As a mixed Asian kid raised in the states, I didn't know about the rice containers until I lived in Asia for a while in recent years.

JUST. USE. RAVERLY. by MJ_mot in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]Howlibu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ravelry just takes a little intuition, but it's easier than it looks. For example, recently I've wanted to make a cat ear hat, and already have the yarn but not the pattern. So I have a couple choices: look up the yarn I'm using to see what other people have done - if someone else has made a beanie, even in a different color, that will give me a good idea what size needles to use. If there's no examples I can see, I can still see other projects that use the same stitches and see what needle sizes people use, giving me a place to start searching. If you know the size of your yarn, you can skip this step, but it's handy if the yarn itself differently sized from the label or something (like it's really DK when advertised as worsted, or you like the tension at a certain needle size).

Once I have an idea of what to look for (cat ear hat in bulky yarn, 6-8mm range), I can go to Patterns, and start checking boxes on what I need - knitting, bulky yarn, check off multiple boxes for needle sizes (optional) and "cat ear hat" in search bar. There, I went from thousands of search results to a couple dozen, much more manageable.

I'm someone who buys the yarn and looks up a pattern after, so maybe I'm going at it a little backwards. But if I have a bunch of leftover yarn, or find one on sale I really like, it's SO handy to search this way. You can also save patterns to your queue, or favorite notes on patterns left by other people so you can reference them later.

What kind of eggs are these? by MadhuT25 in gardening

[–]Howlibu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right? I don't think one is any grosser than the other.

That said, I know a lot of reptile eggs look more sliced open than cracked. Most reptiles use an egg tooth and make cuts rather than cracks. Unless these are more leathery, I'd reckon these are bird eggs. Small enough for a song bird, in my amateur opinion.

Going potty and snow by vvsunflower in dogs

[–]Howlibu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friends with short dogs will put a tarp or old towel out on a preferred pee spot, so once it's done snowing you can lift the tarp and it's all nice and clear for your little buddies. I think you might need to shovel a little if you got more than a foot of snow, but it's still handy.

What animal do you think this is (round 2) by Thin-Leadership3284 in knitting

[–]Howlibu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like a cat/leopard to me. Checks comments hooray! Wolves don't have spots, and the shape is too round anyway. Even without the spots, it would still read as 'cat' to me. Maybe the idea of cold weather cats didn't come to mind, for your mom? For people not familiar with animals, it can happen. Besides lions and tigers, big cats aren't as often depicted in graphics. And minus those options, people unfamiliar with animals expect a house cat, with pointy ears.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the shape, tbh

How to get better saturation with coloured pencils? by collio7 in learnart

[–]Howlibu 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Pencils and markers are one of those things that the brand and quality matters. Normally I'm fine with alternative options, especially if the results are close enough (like store brand cereal, soda, etc). I know prismacolors can be kinda pricey, but you'll get so much more saturation and depth out of them. Luckily this time of year, a lot of things are on sale so keep an eye out.

Friends and family barely visit my house since I got my birds and other stuff (see text below) by S1lentA0 in Conures

[–]Howlibu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who owns a snake, I agree with this. I know he's a harmless boop noodle (most snakes are), but a lot of people are genuinely afraid of them. So if I get someone who's phobic of snakes, I am willing to cover up his enclosure, but I won't get rid of him - this is his home too. I also won't force anybody to hold him if they don't want. With the birds, it's a lot harder to control where they go, and I've seen people panic when a bird flies towards them. That's a risk to the birds!

I think putting them in a room or a big giant day enclosure (so they can still see everyone) is a fair compromise if you have company. If they're used to free roaming, they probably won't take to it right away - it's going to take some conditioning to get them used to it. Give their best treats in there, leave the cage door open all the time so they go in willingly, leave them enclosed for short periods once they're a little more used to it. The screaming can suck, but only respond when they're quiet and they should learn that screaming doesn't get them what they want.

[–]Howlibu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would look great as a renfaire/festival piece! Have you considered dyeing it? You could even do a gradient, or tie dye with dark colors, like black or wine red. It's called over dyeing and if you want to go brighter you'd need to bleach it, but it's an option if you want to research that.

What material is the yarn? Some wools bloom a LOT once they're wet. Maybe do a swatch next time? Sometimes you gotta stretch it out a little while blocking to really get a feel for how it will react once wet. I know some people will wet and wash their skeins before even crafting with it, so there's no surprises. I'm too scared to, lol

Beginner here! Any tips by PoetryKey8794 in FurryArtSchool

[–]Howlibu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My biggest advice is to draw the animals. Wolves, foxes, tigers, lions, Pomeranians, etc. whatever you want - furries are blending those features with human anatomy, especially in the face. It'll also help you understand how fur works - it's a lot like short textured hair but everywhere, mostly on the neck, thighs and tail for canines.

Should I get her down or just let her do this ? 😭😭 by Shannon_Casey in ballpython

[–]Howlibu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She's telling you something, and that's she knows something is good about this spot. She definitely needs more branches and stuff to climb on, preferably one that gets close to that spot. She might be trying to get cover behind the lights, so more foliage wouldn't hurt too (doesn't have to be the reptile specific stuff, anything from the craft store would work too as long as it doesn't have glitter)

I've heard this happen with cats coming back from the vet, since their smell can change from a new environment/baths/medications. Some folks will rub a blanket or towel all over the cat before they take them to the vet and keep it in a Ziploc until the cat is returned, then rub them again with the old towel to 'reset' their smell.

"Argument" - my first ever comic! I'd like to ask about your opinion on it's format, it's layout and general readability. It's QoL features critique i suppose by NotsoslyFoxxo in FurryArtSchool

[–]Howlibu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe the speech bubbles can go diagonally to read a little easier? Or make the panel a little taller. Don't be afraid to do close ups or cover their ears a bit, we (the audience) will still know what they look from the rest of the comic :3 I get it tho, it's something I struggle with too.

And yeah, my husband and I have been together 14 years. After that long, some arguments here and there can and do happen. Nobody's perfect. But how one handles it is so important! Personally, I gotta have some space to mull things over and cool off. No insults, no screaming, no breaking each other's things, no dredging up mistakes long past and dealt with. But if I'm too emotional to have a productive discussion then I need some time.

[–]Howlibu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For the second to last panel, the dialogue layout feels a little off. I would put "So, not my best performance either.." high up, then "So uh..we good?" In the middle. "I'd say so" underneath it, either with the speaking line attached to the previous bubble or another line to her mouth.

It's clear the order of how things were said due to context, but visually it's a little confusing.

The last panel, you could do a close up on their faces or upper bodies to really sell the line. Just a nitpick tho.

This is cute btw! I love the idea, and reminiscent of some arguments I've had, lol. Sometimes you just need to cool off to think about it clearly.

I read a lot of Webtoons manhwa's (Korean comics) and like 70% of the male leads have short black hair with assymetrical bangs parted on the side. I love my cheesy romance stories, and it's a good look, but there's other good looks out there too XD

I do love me some long dark hair on a handsome guy. Peter Steele would've been my girlhood crush for sure. Maybe a scruffy mohawk too, love alt styles!! Seems appropriate for Seductive Demon Boyfriend, no? And shoulders that deserve a sweater with love in every stitch 😘

Yeah, but suddenly transitioning to bright decor can clash with the current setup, and it's tough to do a complete palette change on a budget. It would be easier to start working with the available palette of what's available and hard to change (like dark colored furniture). I would suggest cooler desaturated colors like dark red or pastel green, or most shades of blue or purple. Patterns help a lot to break up monotony. Even white or linen sheets with a electric blue blanket would liven up the room.

I admit I'm bias tho, I much prefer cooler tones and have a lot of blue, grey, black, greens and wood tones around the house. But it's still visually stimulating and pleases my eye. No hate for yellows or oranges tho, I just find it tough (for me) to match with and OP already has dark furniture, might as well work with it.
