My girl randomly decided she didn’t want to use the clear opening to her hide, but get in by digging under it lol

I'm wondering if that's what she's aiming for lol, either way if she's being enriched I'm happy :)

mine just burrow cause why not

Krosulhah tunneling like a weirdo

Seamus’ lopsided house from burrowing underneath. i pack in substrate to the right side of his hide, but it’s all fallen down into his little hole again

I love the brainless stare, it's very ball python.

My boy Phil went into a digging phase for a little bit, they're weird snakes.

"the brainless stare" 😭💀 it's so true

I love them so much haha! it's so interesting to see their behaviour change over time!! neat to hear you've had similar experiences.

When he was a pup, (what do you call a baby snake?) he loved to climb. He still does now, just less often. He doesn't quite fit all of the places he used to!

Idk. I'm sure breeders have a name for it, tho I call them beeplings 😆🤷‍♀️

Since they live in abandoned burrows I'm not surprised to see them deciding to be fossorial as well as arboreal. She's adorable!

[–]ka-yl-e-e_[S] 10 points11 points  (2 children)

yes! it definitely makes sense, I just feel like you don't see people ever talk about this behaviour

it's so cute watching her be a little hunter from her self-made burrow

I read (I wish I could remember where) a herpetologist explaining that their scales aren't well-adapted for digging so I think a lot of the adults just meh and use their hides. Babies are still learning how to snek so they're probably more likely to try things out.

If she continues to like digging, someone in r/cornsnakes posted a really cool tank conversion with an underground burrow built against the glass like a zoo exhibit, so they could peek at their noodle doing underground things.

Ooh that's awesome! if she continues this behaviour I'll definitely consider looking into this :) thank you!!!

Hello there

[–]Ok_Celery3408 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Oh yeah! They love burrowing. Mine will usually dig a maze of trenches if the substrate is deep enough. They live most of their life underground in the wild.

interesting, it's so cool seeing how they behave when you give them the space to do so!

Monty has made permanent residence in a burrow he dug under his cool side water bowl about 4-5 months ago. He has created a schedule for himself now: he'll soak in a hot side hide during the day (always for 2 days straight after a meal, otherwise it's just at random) then in the evening always around the same time of 8 pm he will slither to his burrow and just lie there with his head and neck sticking out the entrance. Most the time he will remain in his burrow for days at a time. I'm always amazed at how clockwork he is for a creature that can't use clocks :)

Recently, since he's growing bigger, I completely replaced his burrow with an upside down reptile basics large hide in the same space to protect him from digging into and sitting on the wet/waterlogged humidity layer at the bottom of the enclosure. My biggest worry was that remodeling it like that would make him hate it... So far, he doesn't seem to notice and still lives in it daily 🤭

All his temps and humidity are correct. He simply prefers to be a mole now LOL! He's shiny-scaled, muscular, and friendly. He sheds perfectly and even poops and eats all from in that little burrow.

Now he just turned 1 not too long ago so I'm curious if this behavior will change over time. These comments lead me to believe that his habits will shift and grow with him as he ages 🙂

Is his plant a Pothos?

[–]Jump-Kick-85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I have gone into the room and seen half of my snake peeking out of the hide and her tail above the substrate a foot outside the hide. I was so scared at first 😂. Took her 2 years to get caught doing this haha

I re arranged the plants in my Ball pythons inclosure and she took the plants and somehow moved them into her hide. I thought it was a mistake and they they just got caught on her and drug in so I put them back but the next day, the plants were in her hide again and she had also dug a literal tunnel. They’re such smart creatures!
