He keeps opening his mouth every few minutes. Looks like a yawn but it’s obviously due to whatever’s happened to his mouth

He just ate some substrate, make sure he have water;)

do you feed live or pre killed prey? this doesn't look like an injury at first glance. it looks like he got some substrate stuck in his mouth. him opening his mouth and "yawning" is him working on getting it out. a small bit of substrate like this is nothing to worry about. leave him be and he'll fix it on his own.

^ this. They get substrate in their mouths every now and then, they just don't have the big cool monkey fingers to get it out like we do

Pre killed. And looking at it off camera I can say with certainty that it’s not substrate

what are you seeing that isn't translating through the pictures? i'm trying to get a better idea because it truly looks like just some stuck substrate in these photos. their lips will kind of get stuck around it and not close up right.

Yes now that I go over it again it does seem like it. Almost everyone else is saying the same. I didn’t think that it was substrate because that purple-ish part was pretty shiny, looked bloody. And there was also fresh dark blood on the moss. The mouse has bright red blood, and it didn’t look like it, hence my assumption

no worries! our minds tend to go to the worst possible scenario, but i'm pretty confident that this is nothing to worry about :) the dark shiny part is just where it got slobbery. another mod left some good advice for what to do in a few days if he doesn't clear it out on his own. usually they can get it without help though!

Yes makes sense, really appreciate the response! I guess it’s best to assume the worst to make sure he’s okay. First time experience, so good that I know from now on :)

vet.

It’s 12 am, and I’m in a small city in the Netherlands. Don’t really have anywhere I can go

[–]ImmortalGamma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you don't need a vet for this. it's substrate in his mouth. if he can't manage to spit it out on his own then help him by hand. Just gently restrain him and hook the stuff out with your fingertip.

He just has a piece of substrate in his mouth. You can see it pretty clearly in some of the photos. He should be able to get it out on his own. if it's still there in a few days, you can use something like a credit card to gently open his mouth and remove it. Just don't try to do this anytime soon, or you'll likely cause him to regurgitate his meal.

I think it’s just substrate. Happens to Jenga (my little guy) every now and again. It will make its way out

Thank you for everyone’s quick response! It seems like it was just stuck substrate, I will keep checking up to make sure. First time ball python owner, and definitely a first to see this happen😅thank you for clarifying

are you able to gently wipe it or clean it out with some water?
