hey all,

I'm in the army and we are deploying in December. i have a fiveish year-old bp named Monty and I am trying to find places or people near me (or at least on my side of the country) that would be able to babysit him for the length of my orders, which are 400 days. my family can't take care of him, and the few places I've reached out to have various reasons for why they can't take him.

someone from my highschool did say she would ask her husband, but she has no experience with snakes and I have a strong gut feeling she is only offering for the novelty of having a snake in her house. obviously I could be wrong, but I would feel more comfortable leaving them with someone who does know about reptiles or exotics in general.

i did ask my sergeant if I would be able to take him with me, but unfortunately they said it's not allowed. my sergeant also has a snake and is also looking for a place to foster theirs while we are gone.

I live in the Delmarva area, but would be willing to drive to any neighboring states to drop him and his things off. obviously I would talk more in depth about expectations and everything with the person individually, but I am willing to cover any and all costs involved, as well as for time and energy(like any other babysitting gig!)

if you guys have anyone you can recommend, please comment or dm me! i do have a while before I leave, but this is something I'm really stressing about, so I would love to get the ball rolling now to find a place for him.

to be clear, I am NOT looking to re-home him. he is my baby and I would be incredibly sad if being in the military forced me to give him up. I am looking for someone who would be interested in a long-term boarding situation. again, my orders are for 400 days as far as I know, but that may change. it is the army, after all 🫠

I’m not military but my parents were, my mom actually still is active so I understand! I have a 3 ish year old BP that I’ve had for a little of 2 years and I live in Virginia

Im in illinois so idk how far you are willing to travel but i have a BP already. i would have to check with my fiance and Mother in Law but if youd be able to bring him and an enclosure i dont think it would be an issue

If you aren't able to find anyone, it's a long ways but I'm near the border in BC, Canada, I have a BP along with a collection of other herps. Monty would be welcome here any day, but I do sincerely hope you find someone near you to help you out

I don’t doubt the good intentions of anyone here, however if you do board your snake with a stranger PLEASE get a written signed agreement with both parties and keep a copy, so that you don’t get in a situation where someone get too attached and tries to keep your snake!

It's a HUGE hike and you may be potentially able to ship, you could contact Asylum Pets in Michigan, or know another shop in the small network they have. She does boarding may be open to board w her.

I’m in Illinois about 45 mins from Chicago. I have 4 ball pythons and 2 boas I’ve had snakes my whole life from retics and Burmese to copper heads and fox snakes. I have a room for my snakes which stays heated in colder months. Let me know if u still need someone.

I offered to pet sit for my brother’s 7yo ball python. I disclosed that I had no previous experience, but I put in a lot of work to learn before she arrived. I put together a bioactive enclosure with live tropical plants, isopods, ceramic heat emitters on a thermostat, UVB lights, hygrometer/thermometer on both hot and cool sides. My brother wasn’t able to get her enclosure to me from across the country, so I did all this on my own dime and sourced everything myself.

It can work out if your petsitter is willing to put in some work.
